I'm Roman Catholic. Seriously, take you're pick.

OP: just want to comment on the fact that my belief on the whole evolution thing differs slightly, I don't reject the possibility that we evolved from a monkey or other animal, as I think that this "random accident" could simply have been part of God's greater plan, and was completely intentional.

I hate when someone finds out I'm Christian, they automatically assume I hate gays. That bugs the crap out of me. Yes, there are a couple of passages in the bible that say negative things about it, but I'm all for homosexuality.
But then that means your going to hell? The bible clearly states that gays are to be put to death so by supporting them you are going against god.
Welcome to the world of organized religion. I say screw it and just live a good life. I know that some of the things I do will offend God and I do apologize, but I refuse to believe in some of the things in that stupid book. Such as people who do not believe in my beliefs do not pass Go and head straight to hell, even if they are some of the greatest people in history. I refuse to believe that Mohandes Ghandi is roasting right now.

Also as a side note, I love your avatar.

Ahh, I would be Christian and my biggest problems are:

A. Gay people think I automatically hate them. Seriously, I don't care if they're gay or not. They can do whatever they want.

B. That religion is unscientific. This my big one. And not because I believe evolution because I don't. Science is based on what you can observe and evolution takes too long for me to observe. It also requires listening to scientists who say they know it all when they could potentially have their own bias. Hence why creationists are not allowed to publish their findings in scientific journals. I'm not saying creationism is true because I don't know but both sides are guilty of withholding information that rejects what they think which makes coming with an opinion quite hard.

And Religion isn't flexible?

(Sorry if I make a mis-guided generalization here, I thought that's what you were getting at :D)

I wasn't saying religion isn't flexible, I was merely saying that the fact knowledge obtained Science is constantly changing is a good thing, not a bad thing.

No, it's dogmatic.
That's why people were hunted down for saying different things.

And, personally, I don't think the religions (but especially the Catholic church) would've changed their positions and behaviours if no external pressure had been applied (Age of Englightenment, rise of science, separation of state and church).
If it's any indication for their priorities, the way the church preaches on condom use for example is outright mass murder.
And people are still being tortured or killed for going against people's belief in some areas (and I'm not just talking Middle East here).

Religion has its basis in the past and going against this basis, no matter how logical it would be to do so because of today's circumstances, would be punished in a theocracy. Religion is pretty stagnant in fact.
But that doesn't matter as long as it isn't involved in secular things such as science (which is founded on constant doubt) and politics (which are based on the current circumstances).

I hope this explains how I feel:
I don't mind religion in general, but I do mind it when it has control on things it has no business interfering with.

Wait a sec. So you're saying that because science is ever-changing that it is flexible? That means that, if science is changing the results to studies are different, meaning we can't count on science to be right. I don't see how this is a strength.

The strength of science is that it is ever changing to accomodate the latest evidence and most compelling argument.
It's how we make progress.
We throw away theories that don't fit and are disproven to make room for new ones, better ones.
How is that not a strength?
Admitting when you are wrong is important.

This is true but it doesn't really add to the strength of science as we don't currently know whether our theories of now will be thrown away in the future so we don't know if we can trust what we currently have.

Well, that's is true, but what's established is the best we have at the moment, supported by the most evidence.
Forgive me, but it's definitely stronger evidence than what religion has to offer.
Not saying religion is worse, just saying it's different.
We shouldn't act like religion and science were the same thing and try to force one into the other (for example, Intelligent Design).
Religion and science both have their place and they shouldn't get in each others' way in my opinion.

Christianity: Everyone assumes either we're boring, extremists or hypocrites. And some of us are. But not all of us. I mean Christian's can definitely have fun. Not all of us are gonna jump down your throat and tell you how to live your life. I, for one, simply am offering you a God who loves you and wants to give you eternal life, but whatever floats your boat. And, well, we all make mistakes. That doesn't make us hypocrites. That makes us human.

oh geeze where to start....

guess the biggest one would have to do with us being considered "non-christian" although it's blatantly obvious that we do believe in christ... (it's right in our title).

sorry :O just had to say that

OT: Im not a believer however i dont like the term "athiest"
i just thinks religion is kinda (you now... the opposite of smart)

Wow I take offense. You could of simply said something along the lines of that you don't agree with homosexuality. With that, maybe i'd have some respect for you for saying something other then a anti-gay slur. Saying sorry doesn't cut the fact that you said it. Forums isn't a place for bigotry.

Did you know that some scientists refuse to publish a thesis written by a creationist? I'm sure it works the other way around too but the thing is that we don't even know if the evidence is true and that scientists themselves on both sides aren't completely biased. The thing is that there is no such thing as conclusive evidence as there is always reasonable doubt.

Well, yes, because there's no evidence to support it. Credible science magazines wouldn't print such a thing.
I know what you're getting at though, i.e. that sometimes scientific bias can be as dogmatic as religion, and I agree with you there (our prof told us of such cases in molecular genetics, unfortunately I can't remember the details to give them as examples).
Dogma (no matter whether it's religious, scientific, political or whatever) is generally hindering progress and should be done away with.

I agree with AvsJoe. The bible was written many many years ago by man. I do what I think is right. I support the gay community because they are human just like everyone else. No reason why we (gay community) shouldn't be treated with respect. Nobody deserves to be treated as outcasts.
