Arcanum of steamworks and magick obscura. It might be well known in some online circles, those who love top down old school pc isometric view rpds, but it's definatly not a mainstream game.
Loved that game.

Eh, for my submission, I'll go with Skies of Arcadia

Might and Magic? It had like 9 games. (Yes 9 i wont count Dark Messiah -Ubisoft)

Actually make that 8... The 9nth sucked.. Bad.

It was an epic rpg that created awesome things like Archimage and Heroes of Might and Magic :p

Not to say that it was a big world where you could do whatever you want. Drag a dragon to a village and make it slaughter everyone? "Go get em'boy"... Must say though.. I dont think its aged too well ;(. But i believe it just as good as any of the more known series.. Like Elder Scrolls. And Eye of the Beholder.

Every time i mention Might and Magic everyone around me goes. I dont like turn based stradegy. I almost rage every time..

Wow a lot of people seem to have missed the part of this thread that requested obscure games.

It's technically a "love sim" type of game I guess, but I really liked Harukanaru toki no naka de 3. It's a historical fantasy RPG and you get to fight demons in the midst of the Genpei Wars. It was cool and the characters were pretty well-rounded.

Does Daggerfall count? Well-known series, not very well-known game.
My brother thought it wasn't legitimately 3D, like the original release of DooM.

Legend of Dragoon is good. Hard to level, though. . .

Also, is Phantasy Star IV unwell known? I don't know, but I love it.

I have to mention Terranigma, the best SNES action RPG ever made. It's largely unknown because it was never released in the US even though it got a PAL release, supposedly because Nintendo of America decided that the upcoming Final Fantasy VII was going to murder it so they shouldn't bother. The spiritual sucessor to Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer, it had great action, an absolute KILLER of a plot, fantastic graphics (including what were undoubtably the best cutscenes on the SNES) and a simply [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXAVutS3YU0] AMAZING [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiW2DbKa_dI] soundtrack. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3mqIDAVObA&feature=related] Possibly the best SNES game that Nintendo have failed to release on the Virtual Console- damn them!

The great Dreamcast RPG, Elemental Gimmick Gear. Second only to Skies of Arcadia. Well, and maybe some others, but I didn't play them.
Banhammered for that? o_O
Guess one of the escapist mods really hates the Dreamcast... XD
No- banned because that post was the first one where one of the mods noticed his name.

Spam removed. Mod.

Feel free to rage. If there weren't turn based strategy games, then there wouldn't be any Advance Wars games. That would truly be a travesty.

"Liberation: Captive II" for the amiga 1200 and CD32. It was awesome. I don't think it came out for the PC and sadly the CD32 emulator doesn't work too well with the original CD. Also the CD32's HD-equivalent was so tragically limited it could barely cope with the save games, and if you tried to save it and there wasn't enough room it would helpfully delete the old save and crash the next time you moved to another city section or entered a building. Saving inside buildings isn't even worth trying. Utterly fantastic game on an utterly shit system.

"Terranigma"

That game is to Europe what "Chrono Trigger" is to America.

A freaking master piece.

A perfect example of what makes the JRPG genre so great, but not so many people know it because it was not released in some territories. However it is even less known because it hasn't been re-released to this point. Europeans already know "Chrono Trigger" thanks to the NDS version (Well, kinda. The distribution of that game plain sucked, and it was only localized to English and French, leaving German, Spanish and Italian totally out), but most Americans still don't know "Terranigma".

And that's just sad. It's one of those games that once you play it, you want this game to be played for as much people as possible.

Anyway, moving on:
________________________________________________________________

The "Tales of" series, specially "Tales of Symphonia", "Tales of Vesperia" and (the best IMHO), "Tales of the Abyss".

Way too many people diminish it because of its plain anime art style, but the thing about this series is that, despite first impressions, it's not a series about anime tropes a clichés.

It is a series about anime tropes and clichés DECONSTRUCTION.

The downside is that, in order to do that, they play the tropes and clichés totally straight for the first hours before starting to deconstruct them. But once they do, they become totally awesome.

Their biggest strength are the characters. Almost always they are perfectly characterized with good dialogue, and even if you don't care that much about the plot, you almost always care about them. Namco Tales Studio is the second best JRPG developer in characterization, second only to Atlus in the "Persona" series.

And the fact that they have awesome combat mechanics (whether they are "Tales of Symphonia" style or "Tales of Destiny" style), arguably the best in Action-RPG style ever, makes this series a must.

Also they usually have great soundtracks (It's Motoi f**** Sakuraba, people!), the main entries have good English voice acting (YES, THEY HAVE, ANIME NERDS! Stop bitching about it and deal with it already!), and they have TONS of sidequests.
________________________________________________________________

All the games from Monolith Software, i.e. "Xenogears" and "Xenosaga".

You like long, deep and elaborated storylines which make sense (in other words, that DON'T end like "Lost")?

This two games have the two best stories in that style EVER.

Almost cliché-free, and the ones used are not the usual JRPG tropes and even there they are used magnificently.

Add endearing characters (specially "Xenosaga"), fascinating sci-fi/fantasy universes and good combat mechanics (except "Xenosaga Episode II", sadly...), incredible soundtracks (Yasunori Mitsuda and Yuki Kajiura ROCK!) and (gasp!) GREAT English voice acting.

________________________________________________________________

Those are my top three not-well-known series. I would add a couple more like "Fire Emblem" or "Valkyria Chronicles", but I think this will do for now.

Maybe I'll come back with more later. :D

I do in some cases find TBS more easy to deal with. Taking time with turns and not being rushed after five minutes can be.. Relaxing.

Apparently it was made by a company that wanted to stop making those creepy dating sims. It sold like hotcakes in Japan, but not so well here. I enjoyed it.
