i grew up along side harry potter. i was 11 when i saw the first movie and i'm 18 as i watch the new one, harry potter's got a magical place in my heart
In order for that to be possible (assuming you are incapable of time travel), you can't have watched the first film until 2 years after it was released... Which i'd hardly say counts as growing up along side him. Unless you mean that you have been in all of the years that harry has been in, but then every single other person over the age of 18 has too...
wtf are you talking about? i grew up with harry potter, you wanna talk shit about my childhood? drive over to my house and do it to my face so i can punch it if you want to.
Didn't you say that aswell as growing up *with* harry potter, you also grew up *alongside* him? It looked like your point was that you were the same age as the characters when the series began, and when it ended. My apologies if I have misunderstood, and I did not intend to cause offence - I was merely pointing out that both the films and the books came out over a 10 year period, whereas the characters were meant to age 7 years, making it impossible for you to both grow up alongside it if you were watching / reading as soon as each came out.
And no, those last two paragraphs were not directed at you, just the original topic. Again, apologies if I caused offence, this was not my intention.
I don't know why you hate anime. I don't mind whether you like it or not. My response to the original topic was that I find it annoying when people bash something that they have never seen/read/whatever. Seeing as you're clearly not in that group (for anime at least), I don't find you at all annoying for disliking it.
Yes, I know you didn't mention twilight. As already stated, I was not talking to you about that. But do you have a justification for hating it? Have you seen or read it? If not, then you fall neatly into what I was saying about antifans. You are using other people's opinions on it to justify your hatred. Fair enough that you don't want to see or read it based on what you've heard. But actually going out of your way to talk crap about it when you actually haven't experienced it is meaningless. But whatever. Yes, as a straight, male, 19 year old, I am defending twilight. I'm not a massive fan or anything. I read the books and was able to enjoy them. Of the people I know that have actually seen/read it, I do understand their objections to it, yes, the main female (I forget her name) is whiny. Yes, I am aware that it is not particularly well written. But it doesn't need to be masterfully written in order to take some enjoyment from it. As to the popularity... I'm not bothered if anyone else likes it or not, that doesn't affect my enjoyment. Also, here's the point where not having actually read or watched it kinda becomes apparent. The books are not entirely soppy romance. Yes, that is the main point. But it's not all there is to it. For example, the last 100 or so pages of the first book (so about the last third) has more of a thrillery feel to it, and that's the part that *I* enjoyed, and kept reading for.
I agree with you about the image. I don't like the idea of glittery vampires, as you say, it just ruins the image. But they do justify it in story, so I let that slide. That and because almost indestructable with inhuman speed and strength is cool.
Just out of curiosity, before i move onto the next point, did you ever read the darren shan series? If you haven't, don't worry, it's not a love story, it's about 'proper' vampires. Only thought of it since they do some reinterperating of vampires too, and one of the things was that they go for any major artery, as you were talking about.
I can't say I did ever watch buffy, but I agree with you, Van Helsing is awesome. And far, far better than twilight. I can't believe i just used them in the same sentence, but the fact that I enjoyed Van Helsing a lot, and probably most out of anything with vampires, does not mean I can't still enjoy twilight.
Ok, I see your point with the dressing up thing. Although that's more of a fan issue - could it not still work with people that still appreciate the rest of the vampire stories?
I haven't seen any of the twilight films after the first one (which I thought was mediocre, but not as bad as the twilight-bashing-brigade claims it is), so i'm basing this only on the look of the werewolf from the trailer, but yes, they do look crap. I'm afraid I haven't seen wolfman, but I have to say that Van Helsing had the best werewolves that I've ever seen.
I'm not sure which film we're talking about here, but then don't watch it if you don't like the look of it. Note that i'm not defending Taylor Lautner - I don't like him either.
At the end of the day, whether you like any form of media is purely subjective. It may or may not meet some arbitary standard that we have set for something, but that doesn't mean that said thing should never be experienced by anyone, ever. 'Good taste' is equally a matter of opinion, and doesn't mean you can't dip into things that someone else doesn't like.
Again, I was not trying to be offensive or argumentitive, and I wasn't accusing you of being an antifan (until after you replied anyway). I accept that you don't like what you have heard of twilight, and I won't force you to read it. But do not be so hasty as to judge everything about it from just the things that you've heard. But whether you like it or not, other people do enjoy it, and i have enjoyed it, and you cannot claim that an opinion is 'wrong'.
