eh that is kinda a hard question for me I guess fps I have about 500 hrs. on TF2 but I rarely play many other shooters and I suck a CS.
I play a lot of fighting games but I can only really play Street Fighter well.
Maybe Dota games but there I know people who are way more into it then I am.
I don't play shooters besides Touhou so I suppose I would say
So I guess I am not really a connoisseur of games at all.

Let's see...mostly strategy games, especially the Total War and C&C-series. And I used to play a lot of sim games, although I grew out of those (except for Tropico, love the political jokes).

Well I'm pretty good at strategy games..

But there's only one game I can really ace, Small Soldiers on PS1.. can get most of the way through without dying.

Probably the Tomb Raider series, for better or worse! ;-) My sister and I played the first 5 games *to death*. We wrote walkthroughs for those things...oh to have the excessive free time of youth once more...

Perhaps Pokemon as well?

Other than that, I have a special fondness for older RPGs like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale etc. The D&D based stuff.

I don't think connoisseur is the right word. That makes it seem like you only like the best of what the genre has to offer. I'm a connoisseur of most genres, even if it's in a genre I'm not particularly fond of great game is a great game. I wouldn't say I'm a JRPG connoisseur since I enjoy them even if they're not great but only good or meh.

I don't know if I can enthuse upon any particular genre or game but I am like a walking gaming and movie wikipedia. I have a mountain of useless information pertaining to both subjects. :(
Are you my kindred lost spirit, for I too possess a useless amount of information pertaining to the history of movies and to a lesser extent gaming. I also fancy myself fairly well versed in the world of Pokemon, you play me the sound of one of the little bastards and I should be able to tell you who they are, all their evolutions and various other things. Though that skill has begun to wain over the past years since I've got more of life and can't spend all my time playing pokemon games.

Anything and everything.

EXCEPT PlayStation and majority of it's games... they're totally different from the xbox's general games. and any PC games. Nintendo, gamecube... some arcades.
...what?! Games aren't completely defined by the platform they're released on. As a multiple console owner, this statement confuses me. Could you elaborate?

OT: I'm pretty well practised on platformers. Got 105% completion on Crash 3, beaten pretty much every Sonic game in existence, currently getting into the Mario franchise after missing Nintendo in my younger years (I was a SEGA/PS child). Sonic holds a lot of nostalgia for me and I enjoy many of the series instalments, and will never give up on the series despite some poor releases. I thoroughly enjoyed Sonic 4 Episode II, Sonic Colours, and Sonic Generations, and feel the series is on its way back to a decent quality.

I also hold my own very well on fighting (beat em up?) games. Tekken I've managed to master, especially from 4 onwards when the framerates improved drastically due to better hardware. I tend to treat fighting games like rhythm games. It's an unconventional style but it works. I despise people who use cheap tactics like move repeating.

My 3rd favourite genre is the RPG. I started with simple turn-based JRPGs like Pokémon Blue/Silver and Final Fantasy's PS1 outings, but then moved on to western RPGs in recent years, favourites including the Mass Effect trilogy and Fable II. I enjoy a decent story and feel this medium is very immersive.

Dem indies *adjusts monocle* quite. OK but I can pretty much tell you the rough history of why indie games are now more prevalent then they used to be.

Horror, similar thing as above, I can tell you about many major horror games in basic-form. I might get a thing or two wrong but I can do it.

Tactical Espionage Action, excluding Splinter Cell. I can tell you about Metal Gear Solid in basic terms along with Tactical Espionage Arsehole-ery. If you don't know this game, Total Biscuit did a WTF is of it last year I believe.

Simple things about the NES, Dos, Apple 2, SNES and Genesis.

FPS, from Call of Redundancy to Half-Life: Playing this game is like having blowjobs from the most awesome angel.

In conclusion, a lot of things that are not RPGs. I'm not into Japan and its weird as hell perceived world.

But can you explain MGS2?

Because I sure as hell can't

The patriots wanted to recreate the Shadow Moses incident so the entire game was just them seeing if you could, reliably make a 'solid snake' by just recreating everything under the right conditions.

In essence everything else doesn't really matter because this was all just a giant social experiment brought-up by some people that may or may not be aliens or may or may not be a computer A.I.

You can link a lot of things in MGS 1 to MGS 2 if you look hard enough. The only few deviations if I recall was the bomb boss and the bomb defusal gameplay mechanic.

There were a lot of puzzles put back from MGS 1 to MGS 2, I'm having a hard time remembering which ones but I believe the electric floor makes a appearance along with the 'shoot a rocket through these ducts' section make a comeback.

This conclusion is pretty much told to you in the last hour of the game, or you have to go find a synopsis on the game and see what they thought of it. This is the conclusion I came to.

Platformers, particularly 3D platformers. Love'em, and they're my favourite and best genre. Jak, Ratchet, Sly, Spyro, Crash, Rayman, and the odd Mario or Sonic.

Mind you, there haven't been many good ones this generation (particularly of original IPs), so I have been rather hungry. I've even been trying to get satisfied with platforming elements in other games, but it's just not doing it.

I'm an RPG connoisseur at heart. Hence my love for Persona 3, 4, Fallout 3, Paper Mario series, Disgaea series, and so on.

I'm also pretty versed in the PS2 platformer trio. If you bring up Ratchet, Jak, or Sly Cooper in a conversation, you'll hear nothing but love for all three series.

First Person Shooters and RTS games. If we're talking about games/franchises then Halo, Half-Life, Battlefield, and Warhammer 40K.

And by RTS I don't mean Real-Time Hotkey Races (I'm looking at you, Starcraft!)

Well I tend to recognize voice actors between rolls, from Jennifer Hale as FemShep in Mass Effect and Trishka in Bulletstorm, to Troy Baker as Vincent in Catherine and Two-Face in Batman: Arkham City.

PS1 and 2, played'em almost all my life and I still play them each week.
Most of these being RPGs and platformers, so overall I'd say old school platformers.
Not just Playstation but all platformers are near my heart if they have something to offer;
Klonoa, Megaman, Castlevania, Mario and Rayman being the most noteable.
(Just a small list of personal preferences but in the nature of this tread I could talk all day.)

umm... Hack and Slash :D

I don't think i'd be well versed in any genre... there was a gap where I didn't get any new games and kinda got distant from the whole medium for a bit... that and I just got introduced to steam and stuff so I'm just learning about all the new games and stuff

like Torchlight :D I really wanna get it... played over an hour on the demo <.<

I think I'm more a connoisseur of good game mechanics, if that makes sense. Or at least I seem to be good at picking up on whether or not something "fits" well within a given game; a skill that, along with liking several different genres of games, would be useful to a game reviewer.

Dunno, I haven't owned a Play station except for the second and that was pretty much for god of war alone, and even that....

Hard to explain. How many Dark Clouds do you see on the xbox? KINGDOM HEARTS? (Fucking good game btw) They just have a totally different feel to them. I pop in an xbox game or most other games, I pretty much know what to expect.

I do admit not have too much experience with the play station but any time I have been on it playing any of it's games, it is a totally different experience.
Oh OK I get what you mean now. (I love Kingdom Hearts :D)

Playstation 2 did have a lot of great original titles. I was confused as today PS3's titles are generally as generic as those of Xbox 360. Not meaning it to sound as negative as it seems, but I generally know what to expect, though I still have fun.
