MGS4 has no faults, seriously? You're rather forgiving, aren't you.

OT: Portal is the closest, but it's too fucking short. No game has no faults, it's impossible. But Portal is definitely the closest.

I would say the closest a game comes to a 10/10 for me is Crash 3, but then those plane levels suck major ass.
Mass Effect 2 is a contender as well, but I haven't really played it enough to make a definite decision.

I don't beleive in absoulute 10 out of 10 games because no game that I think is perfect will stay perfect or be viewed as perfect in other people's opinions. The closest to perfect...Halo 3 because it's story is original(first Halo game I played), the music is outstanding, and the vast number of awesome multiplayer modes like forge, the different slayers, and everything in the double exp weekend. Half Life 2 is another candidate because once again it's story is original and interesting, the variety of cool guns and enemies is superb, and the characters are realistic and well designed. Oh, I almost forgot Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door! Seriously, go play this game, its arguably the best game on the gamecube, it has some of the best characters and character diologue in gaming history, and it's extremely fun (for a JRPG). I'm going to keep looking at this thread because I really want to see people put their opinion with valid arguments. That way I can find lots of really fun games I never played.

EDIT: Damn! I forgot Portal! Well there goes my ``there is no such thing as a perfect game`` rant.

*stares at all my games*

The Uncharted games, God of War 1-3 and the first Ratchet & Clank games all deserve a 10/10 from me.

No such thing as a perfect game, but the few that have come closest in my mind are:

Call of Duty 4
Halo 2
Warcraft 3
Mass Effect
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario World

Not necessarily! 10 is just an approximation to 2 significant figures. So anything higher than 9.5, you can validly give it a big round 10, and no maths teacher could ever have a problem with that.

Though not wanting my first post to be just a technicality:
Portal, Braid, Freespace 2, Deus Ex, VVVVVV, original Crash Bandicoot. Platformers have a habit of being timeless.

Portal

At the time I thought Baldur's Gate II, but the isometric camera and navigating six guys around tight hallways look really dated now.

I think Diablo II and World of Warcraft are in a sense, by all the hours I've spent on them.

A score out of 10 isn't accurate enough for my liking. 10/10 to my mind means somewhere between 90% and 100%. I've played plenty of games in this range (ME2 and Portal come readily to mind) but I'm not sure if I've ever played anything that was 100%.

I'll qualify that briefly. Alexander the Great wept salt tears that there were no more worlds to conquer. A 100% score will be reserved for the game that gives me precisely this feeling.

For the moment I'm happy with 99.8% awesome with a 0.2% margin of error :)

No such thing as a perfect game. Not yet, at least. There're tons of games I'd give 9/10, though, such as
Ico
SotC
PS:T
Grim Fandango
Psychonauts
ME2
Vampire:Bloodlines
Portal
Gitaroo Man

Absolutely none. There is always room for improvement, and the second there isn't, games would stop trying

well i think certain games deserve 10s if they're the best in their category (meaning there's not other games to compare them to)

such as:
Rock Band 3 would get a 10/10 for being the best music rhythm game
InFamous would get a 10/10 for being the best Super Hero sandbox game
Mass Effect 2 would get a 10/10 for being the best Action RPG
Half-Life 2 would get a 10/10 for being the best Pure Shooter
Portal would get a 10/10 for being the best puzzle game
Minecraft would get a 10/10 for being the best pure Sandbox game
Starcraft 2 would get a 10/10 for being the best RTS
Civilization 5 would get a 10/10 for being the best turn-based RTS

i could go on and on and on, but basically, if there's no other game like it or it does things better than anything else like it then i give it a 10/10

No such thing as a "perfect game" per say but their are still amazing games. My personal favorite is Saints Row 2 the co-op is just damn amazing.

Call of Duty 2
Medieval II: Total War
and Left 4 Dead.

I could just play those forever and ever and ever...

Well, they do seem to be working on DotA 2, so there you go.

10 out of 10 doesn't mean it's perfect.

Thank you...

10/10 just means it's in the very top tier of games for whoever is reviewing it.

I'm amazed how many people don't get this and go 'DURR 10/10 is stoopid there's no such thing as pufekt'

.
