I live in Sweden, and nobody here would ever name their kid Karl-Otto unless they want him to get bullied. I've never been in the USA, but I'm told that if you're named Melvin there, people'll assume you're a member of the chess club. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) So tell me, fellow escapists, what names are considered geeky and nerdy where you live? For additional bonus points: Tell me what names are considered wimpy in Japan.

If you are a dude named Angel or Ashley, you will hate your parents.

Melvin? I dunno, never actually met anyone named Melvin.

I know that in Japan, Taro is at least considered boring, or nondescript.

Which kind of proves what I'm saying. :)

Max, Magnus, Stirling, Lance... basically anything considered manly in America. Here in Australia we give those names to girls. I'd post the names we give to men here but they'd leap out of your screen, strangle you, sleep with your women and drink your beer.

Like Chopper. Or Hogan.

Or is Chopper a nickname?

Edit: Ok, the dude's name is Mark Brandon Read. How... ordinary. My understanding of the world has fallen to pieces.

The only Melvin I've ever met was a complete badass, which struck me as somewhat odd. More power to him, though.

The most famous "Chopper" was actually called Mark Brandon, Chopper was indeed his nickname.

No... 'drink your whiskey and complain about the state of the beer.'

OT: There're a lot of unisex names in Japanese that are... effeminate, but not necessarily 'wimpy', but don't quote me on that.

In Chinese... haven't the faintest idea, because I'm not particularly au fait with Chinese naming conventions (as far as actual names are concerned, as opposed to naming structures).

In the UK, there are no real 'wimpy' names, just names that you can take the piss out of.

It's funny, because I was named after Colin Mochrie.

I beg to differ my friend.

Tarquin and Timothy are names I would consider "wimpy".

It's also somewhat true. For some reason people usually laugh a little when they find out my middle name's Colin.

Where I live, it's a sign of weakness to spell your name correctly.

Alixzander, Ad'M, Ambah, Armahnni...those are big strong names.

Timothy, I'm not sure... but 'Tarquin', perhaps not 'wimpy', but the kind of name that is just begging to have stones thrown at you for... like 'Gordon'.

I'm just thinking, if Jock Stirrup was in school today, man would he have it bad...(!)
