What are your favourite point-and-click adventure games?

So in a GOG.com sale a little while ago I picked up Myst and Riven, because for $3 each why the hell not? Now, I'd never actually played them before (or any games of this sort really... possibly a couple as a young kid, but I don't remember anything specific), but I figured I might as well see why they were so popular.

I finished Myst earlier tonight. I really enjoyed it at times and absolutely hated it at times. The fact that you have to just "remember" (i.e. write down on a physical piece of paper in front of you) a lot of important pieces of information is a pain in the ass, and there was a musical note matching puzzle that took me ages because I'm not shall we say, musical.

But it does seem like a genre worth my time, if I can find some games with less annoying puzzle elements (and being able to carry clues in your inventory would certainly be nice).

So I shall ask you what your favourite games of this type (or similar) are. The only other one I've got is The Longest Journey (another sale purchase that I haven't played yet).

Also, is it just me or would a Myst-style game where you explore an island with today's graphics (possibly still going the pre-rendered route for maximum beauty) be particularly awesome?

Myst IV was pretty good. Riven is my favourite in the Myst series although some of the puzzles are painfully obscure if you aren't in the right frame of mind.

Longest Journey *is* my favourite point and click (at least more modern one). Classic one would have to be Day Of The Tentacle.

Possibly try Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened. Extremely engrossing if a "little" clumsy at points.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (Sequel to The Longest Journey) is the only point and click game I've played so far besides Flash games. I don't remember much of it, but I do remember being very confused.

EDIT: Wait, no, I've mixed them up. I played The Longest Journey, not Dreamfall. I was still confused though.

The Day of The Tentacle, a very worthy sequel to the classic Maniac Mansion
Sam and Max Hit the Road, the new games are great but they never hit the heights of the first.
I Have No Mouth and I Must scream, not exactly a feel good game.

Otherwise, I like games such as Sam and Max, Strong Bad's Cool Game for Awesome People, and the "Chzo Mythos". (I'm not trying to be a kiss-up, I swear!)

Is King's Quest 6 a too obvious answer? I like the whole series, but the sixth one has aged a lot better than the rest. It also made it more difficult (or at least less easy) to get yourself in an unwinnable situation, than the earlier Sierra games.

It has pretty visuals (except for the 3D intro video), interesting setting (a mix of all sorts of fairytales and such), and the puzzles are challenging, but don't rely too much on moon logic.

It's probably my favourite adventure game. I think the KQ series is available on GOG, and maybe on Steam, but I'm not sure. If you can get it, start with KQ6.

The Myst series is atypical for adventure games, and is really more like puzzle games. The difference is that 'true' adventures have puzzle gameplay that is integral to the story, while the puzzles in the Myst series tend to be very abstract.

The best graphical adventure ever made is without a doubt Grim Fandango. Technically it's not point and click but it's the exact same type of gameplay. The controls feel a bit wonky but the game is well worth it.

The Longest Journey has a very good story and some great characters, but the puzzle gameplay is lacking. It feels more like an interactive story than a game. It is pretty easy and a good start for beginners.

Other than those two I can recommend Day of the Tentacle the sequel to Maniac Mansion. A wacky humurous game where you play in 3 parallel times all at once!!! It has some of the most creative puzzle elements I have seen.

And of course then there is the big classic Monkey Island series. Everyone loves that.


Most of the games people mention are comedies and that is probably because that was the preferred genre for Lucasarts who made some of the best games.
Sierra made some very good adventures too, my own favorite is Conquest of Camelot. Personally I can't stand the King's Quest series, but I've been told it's good. I think it has too many fairies, kings and gnomes.
The traditional Sierra adventures are not really point and click. They use a classical text interface in combination with some point and click elements. They usually also include some action sequences.

If you feel like going real old school, Maniac Mansion was probably the first true point and click adventure. It is included in Day of the Tentacle.

Sherlock Holmes: The Awaken (Lovecraft Mythos and Holmes! They were MEANT to be together!).

For many reasons Action (point and click) is not my favourite genre of games by far, one is that I suck at them. And still, The Longest Journey: Dreamfall, which is the second of the two, is one of the best experiences I have ever had on any art medium (cinema, theatre, etc). It is that great a game.

The first two monkey islands The Secret of Monkey Island (this being number one) and Monkey Island 2 (real original name they got there) Dreamfall (which is The Longest Journy 2) is also good, but i wouldnt of called it a point'n'click, deffinatly an adventure though.

Any of the point and click games made by humongous entertainment. They made awesome point and click games for kids. Sam and Max and the point and click games made by telltale are also fun to play and if it counts as well. Some of the point and click games made for the homestarrunner website are fun.
