so fucking awesome

and more games should be made around it like Prototype
I don't think Prototype counts due to the Blood Gliding he performs.

I think you mean Lara Croft games, Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge, Prince of Persia, Brink...those are free running.

Edit: sums of me spelinz wer wr0ngz

The way I always thought of it was that parkour was the set of techniques used to make free running possible (mitigating fall damage, efficient climbing methods, etc), where free running was the actual movement over distances that applied parkour techniques.

Also, I couldn't do it myself, and I don't see how useful it would be to me in my current urban environment, but eh. I don't think I really have an opinion on it.

I like the principles of parkour, and it's a lot of fun when you can string together good moves.

But free running always seemed douchey to me. It ignores the entire point of parkour and is basically just there to show off.

I really, really wish I could find somewhere to do it. The tempest video was so awesome but my hometown is so free of places to practice any but the most boring of interests. Still love it though.

My view: they need to make a new Mirror's edge
except not 6 hours long, that part kinda sucked

what they need to do is make a level creation system, in which players can place music, enemies, obstacles, and be able to apply textures to every mesh (though it is optional, it would be awesome)

I liked the concept, I liked the combat, I liked the cool cutscenes

It's cool, I wouldn't mind being able to randomly backflip over walls now and again, would definetly be a conversation starter.

But I cant see it being a sustainable hobby, you'd need to be in tremendous shape. Plus I'd feel a total tit while practicing it. People walking past would think you've gone totally loco.

the OP has got it half right: parkour is technically a martial art for getting from A to B quickly. it gets you fit and its fun.
flipping around is freerunning and is literally to show off. i live in a small town, and theres a lot of traceurs/freerunners in the area.

Parkour is epic. In my town we got loads of newbie parkour kids :p.
I just feel it would be epic to try in a Favela..

I do parkour and and it's really fun. Trying to work up the skills to be able to do full-on free running, but summer school and a nagging mum doesn't really help.

Looks really cool and must be great fun, not to mention great excercise, but I reckon there's probably a horrible and painful learning curve.

I kinda wish I could do it but frankly I'd want to get some climbing training first and I'm already chasing my 2nd martial art instructorship and planning a 3rd so I really don't know when I'll get round to it.

Moreover, I'm pushing 30 and I get the impression that it's something you should at least make a start on while you're still pretty young, if not for any other reason than getting any injuries out of the way while your body's still able to heal well.

I would note one thing that pisses me off a bit about Parkour and that's the way it's got really trendy and ubiquitous lately. Other people already mentioned the countless movies where it's been used but I'd also point out the prevalence of expensive "Parkour clothing" etc. I'm not really sure that the traceurs themselves are to blame for this though, it's probably the same commoditisation of anything at all novel, where the majority of people who were fans/practitioners before roll their eyes at the exploitation. Skating and martial arts come immediately to mind.

OH GOD THEIR KNEES WILL BE SO BAD IN 25 YEARS.

Really, that's exactly what I think in my brain, over and over when I see it.
I can imagine it would feel exhilarating at the time, but with a genetic predisposition to bad knees, I'm not interested in risking it.

I also have to wonder how badly they get scraped up, slamming into brick walls 'n such as they do.
No reason to worry, now. If they did things correctly, they'll be all fine until they're 70.

Speaking as a former Parkour trainee, the amount of damage done to you upon landing is indicated by how much SOUND that springs on impact. No kidding.
Although you can't hear it in the video, if you make no sound upon landing, you've not done any good damage to yourself, but if you stomp... That's a whole other story.

The less sound, the less damage basically. But they could had used a bit more rolls, as they pan out the damage from the velocity in a dramatically decreased manner...

Hope that remedies your worries, though.

OT; Well, I've done many practices, and they were ALL entertaining. When you've got a good group going, you can have fun AND train your body at the same time. Weird, right?

first time i tried it, i wasn't amazing at it and even though i was in super shape at the time it took more of an upper body toll than i was used to so i didn't perform too well on that front, however i just took a rockclimbing class this past spring in college and i tried it again after that, wasn't in as amazing shape as before but had really built up a better upper body use so i was better at it, and it was quite fun

the only problem is you need to have complete confidence and full control over your body otherwise you'll see dumbasses mess it up all the time (like a couple of my friends)

although i have a few friends who are good and can do front/backflips really well over fences and chest high walls so it's pretty cool.

It's awesome. never done it myself, but I find it's impressive. I have the main character in the novel I write do it all the time to get around.
