I liked the first one. Scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it, but that is because I was expecting it to scare the shit out of me. I was hiding in my coat for the second one because I was expecting it to be scary, to either live up to or exceed the first; but I went out somewhat embarrassed that I did. I am very much susceptible to tension and jump scares, but that only works the first time around. The first movie, has retrospectively dull as it was, I still like because of what it is trying to do; bringing back horror which is not blood, guts, and gross outs. I'm still going to see the third (hopefully today actually), and I know that I am going to be hiding in my coat, but I have low expectations for it. On a very petty note, I have some hatred for the first movie for not having dvd commentary
I watched the first one with my lovely girlfriend (she loves horror movies) and I actually thought it was pretty good and we were both creeped out by it (remember that we were both alone in the dark in the basement that makes lots of random noises at night and that's more or less what the film is about, can you blame us?).
I've only seen the first but I do feel that it is a very atmospheric movie and if you're in the right conditions and mindset for it then it's pretty damn scary.

I enjoy them purely for entertainment value. They don't horrify me, but they can surprise me. I hope the 3rd one will be the last, otherwise it'll turn into the Saw franchise. The budget to ticket sales ratio seems to be pretty favorable, so I won't be entirely surprised if they keep making them.
I saw the first one...it was dull...really really dull, I knew it would be since idiots at college were saying it was really scary. I've never been scared easy by horror films but that said sometimes they can just be good, but to tlak about films that actually had an effect, Alien, I saw it when I was 10 and yeah creepy, one of my top films ever as well. The Thing (80's version NOT THE NEW ONE) Well Paranoia in a nut shell everything works in that to great advantage and I only once guessed who the monster was posing as correctly. Event Horizon, the only film Paul Anderson ever made well, it borrows a lot from Alien but it's weird as hell and rather unnerving at times.
I know all the examples I've given are sci fi so here's some other good horror movies, 28 Days Later, Halloween (Original, no sequels/remakes) The Wicker Man (original) is just disturbing, the scariest thing about it is how it doesn't try to look all grim and how all the people just act so normal about everything they do.

I've seen the first and second movies, planning on seeing the third one this week.
I'm a big fan of the movies. Despite having really annoying characters (dear God, Micah) I thought the first one was scary as all hell. I didn't sleep for like three days after seeing it.
The second movie was much less scary, but the characters were far more sympathetic and the story was more engaging. The use of multiple cameras
I'm trying to think of why some people find these movies terrifying and why others think they're boring. Part of it might be which horror movies you saw when you were younger (slasher/ monster movies versus movies based more on atmosphere), but I think the big factor is how susceptible you are to the fear of being alone in a house at night. If you're the sort of person who's sat up in bed at 3 am with your heart in your mouth because you thought you heard something downstairs these movies are pretty much your greatest nightmare in movie form.
Another factor at play here is that I'm a huge advocate of the found footage genre , whereas I know a lot of people don't care for it.

They're awful is what I'm getting at. Just what the fuck? There were no characters, no plot, and nothing to be scared about because the worst thing that can happen is the people dying and that would be incredibly satisfying after about 25 minutes of that shit.

I love found footage movies too, I just find these ones boring and non-entertaining. I just bought Rec 2 today ^_^ and I hope I like it just as much as the first one. Still, no found footage movie as ever scared me like The Blair Witch Project, that shit freaked me out the first time I watched it.Penguin_Factory said:

These movies are such bullshit, they're so unrealistic. In a situation like that you're supposed to say something like " In the name of Jesus I rebuke you!! " and if that doesn't work get someone to do an exorcism.
Well, if you are not 'open' to these things 'they' cannot harm you. I am not exactly a horror person so I have not seen any of them. I hate their trailers though, they rely too much on jump scares which really bothers me. I can deal with almost any instance of 'big scary thing advances slowly towards hero', 'big scary thing moves around in the shadows behind main character', 'character is plunged into darkness, finds a light and big scary thing is there when the lights come back on', but cant stand the 'big scary thing pops out of freaking nowhere'.
Honestly I like them. I am no fan of horror movies but most these days seem to be slasher gore fests with HOLY SHIT BLOOD AND TITS LOOKIT LOOKIT approach. I mean, it was creepy, like watching Slenderman vids on youtube, and it made me uneasy the entire night after watching it. Best thing ever? Not really, it was shot on a budget and its good for what its worth. Does it need a trilogy? Nope. I think a lot of the horror part comes from religious nutjobs that think this actually happens on a day to day basis. You know how many people think this movie is plausible? >__< a sickening amount to be honest. What we need is a combination of good suspense, with good effects. Hopefully I can see this horror movie before I die.
