Yes, Metro 2033. That other Ukrainian developed First-person/horror shooter set in a post-apocalyptic setting. It was brought up in the recent Extra Creditz episode and I thought it's a good time to know what my fellow escapists think about the game.

Having put 41 hours into it(according to the highly unreliable steam timer), I can safely say it's one of my favorite shooters since Half-Life 2. Funny, since the game shares so much similarities to HL2 without it being a direct rip-off. It has a wonderfully haunting atmosphere and while the setting is a "generic post-apocalyptic ravaged by nuclear war", 4A did an amazing job creating such a meticulously detailed world. The weapons feel right, at least on Ranger where human enemies aren't bullet sponges, especially the air-pumped rifles.

I do have some problems with it such as inconsistent enemy AI and the damn ameobas in the final level but all in all, it's an excellent game that definitely deserved more attention than it got. regardless of its flaws.

Never played the game, might try and pick it up for cheap sometime in the future.
I did really enjoy the book though.

I really enjoyed it, good game and one of the best atmospheres ive encountered in a while, though that could be just cause they made their mind up about what they wanted to make and stuck with it.
Aside from the odd glitch that was more random than breaking and probably my fault more than anything, it was better made than a number of more mainstream games ive played.
Unfortunately ive only played my friends copy so far so only played like 10 hours tops over a couple of weeks.
Actually one thing i could complain about is the AI overrunning me on several occations, but that could have just been me?

It is awesome.

However, the AI can be a little buggy. And some of the enemies are down right bitches to kill. And the stealth system was broken. But i managed to look past all that because the ending was stellar.

The whole game is pretty much awesome, though. And it's about Russians.

I absolutely loved it. It felt like a tightly directed and fun Stalker.

The world was very fully realized, the music was great, the voice acting good and the story was ok too. The environments were awesome, and the monsters were scary. The stealth sections were hard but rewarding, and the game was actually occasionally really scary. Not Amnesia scary, just the right amount of fear.

I loved the fact that so much on your character felt...physical. The pump-action flashlight, the clock showing the time left on your oxygen (not via HUD but the brilliant wrist watch), and the gas mask you put on and that can get broken...

Fantastic game. And now you can get it dirt cheap...so I advice anyone that hasnt already to do so.

Great Potential, good game, crap implantation of stealth system. Did you manage to save Khan in purely stealth mode? You should have had the option.
Nothing more to add.

Excelent, beautiful game, even if the stealth element was terrible.
Very atmospheric and a well written plot although not got round to reading the book it's based on unfortunately.
Loved the destructive ending, that trippy part was great fun.

It's also still one of the best benchmarks currently due to the rediculous requirements of full settings on Dx11.

Agreed with OP. I normally detest FPS games cause they're really not my cup of tea, so to say, but Metro 2033 was amazing.
Loved how well the gameplay could fluidly switch from stealth to full out action and vice versa.
It somehow felt right when i played it.
Also, whenever someone mentions Metro 2033, im remembered of the library section (practically unkillable gorilla'ish enemies that act like animals defending their turf). I hated and loved that segment both at the same time.

The stealth itself wasn't bad. It's just that as soon as one enemy sees you, the entire battalion on that area knows your exact location. There is no "grey" area where they are looking for you. That being said, it feels immensely satisfying taking out guards with your throwing knives and the butt of the shotgun. Sneaking through a battlefield between Nazis and Communists undetected in one of the most tense stealth experiences I've had. Shame that it's so unforgiving.

EDIT: you mean Bourbon on the station level? Khan is the religious dude who escorts you through half the metro. interesting guy. Also you couldn't save Bourbon, didn't you see how the killer and Bourbon shot each other at the same time. It all happened so fast.

I thought the game was alright. Hated the guns though, especially that useless fucking shotgun. It takes like 30 seconds to fully load it and when you're being swarmed by those mutant things it just becomes a pain in the ass.

The book was freaking amazing, I don't have a good PC for the game and I don't want to play a game like that on the 360.

Unfortunately most of the time stealth is actually that hard, one scream will alert fucking EVERYONE nearby. Humans are really quite good at that. I've only encountered about two places where a guard saw me, i knifed him and without a sound, people know where i am.

Its not perfect, but the stealth was actually really quite well done. It annoy's me that so many people complain about it being broken when it really isn't, it just needs practice.

DAMMIT OP I'M PLAYING IT AGAIN

I rather like it. Though those amoeba-things was the only time I found the automatic shotgun any good. That, and bayoneting the Librarians.

As far as post-apocalyptic games set in the former CCCP go, I liked it better than Stalker. And you have no idea how much I loved stalker.

I also agree wholeheartedly with every good thing mentioned about it in this thread so far. For me, it was one of those games I bought because I was looking for a good game to kill time with, like the cel-shaded Prince of Persia, and ended up with a new game in my top ten. Can't wait for Last Light to launch. There were some especially excellent cutscenes in the game, such as when you get briefly captured by the Nazis and are rescued by the unstoppable forces of Pavel and Ulman. This may be a little strange, but the number of times I've reenacted that scene with a knife hilt and a punching bag in my basement is just plain too many.

I think it's a fantastic game. It's really intense, especially those moments when you're sneaking around with your throwing knives at the ready and accidentally trip an alarm or when you're on the surface on your last air filter and the frantic search for a new gas mask or filters gets more and more frantic as time ticks on.

It's got a fantastic atmosphere and immersion, even if the gameplay isn't 100% solid. There was a particular moment when you had a kid on your back, the way they set you back was to make the controls feel really unresponsive. I can understand to a degree, but a reduced running/turning speed would have been less of a handicap to aiming, especially when the last enemies in that section are the really quick little diggers.

Possibly one of my favourite games so far. Originally I got a pirated version of it(LET ME FINISH) played it through twice to get both endings, and loved it so much I went and bought it on Steam at full price and I'm playing it AGAIN on the new ranger difficulties. The atmosphere is brilliant and the guns feel realistic, and the good ones feel good and the bad ones feel bad, so when you get a new gun you get that nice sense of accomplishment. The stealth is...ehhh..I think we all know its badly done, but the other aspects make up for it and I loved the moral system.
