I don't see why Metroid Prime wouldn't count. Hell i believe i should count more that some of the games listed here. Its not a rpg hybrid, it doesnt have multiplayer, you spend most of your time shooting things, there are little to no NPCs or quests, there's no magic. Sure it's sci fi and has color but that's not a reason to exclude them
The sci-fi/colour argument is a strawman. I never said anything about sci-fi or colour impacting a game's genre classification.

That said, when it comes to categorization, I go by Extra Credits, namely:

-Is x "part" of this game?

-Is x "the reason" I play this game?

Per your argument up above, I'd argue that you spend most of your time exploring rather than shooting, which is the key difference. Same reason I wouldn't call something like The Legend of Zelda a hack n' slash, even if that describes Link's sword movements. Same way the 2D Metroid games aren't classified as "run n' gun," even if that's what Samus is doing a lot of the time.

Course it's just semantics at the end of the day, but my original comment was answering why I don't think many people have listed the Prime games, because it's rare that I see anyone describing them as examples of the genre in question.

Going by this thread, it seems the combined criteria of OP and commenters are: not hybrid, not stealth, not multiplayer only. Thus begins my list.

10) CoD 4: Modern Warfare
9) Far Cry 3
8) FEAR
7) Half-Life 2
6) Crysis
5) Metro 2033
4) Wolfenstein: The New Order
3) Quake 1/2
2) Rainbow 6: Vegas 2
1) Doom 2

FPS/RPG hybrid is one of the most important sub genre of FPS. why did you leave out my friend?

this genre was quite dead but now resergence again with Deus Ex MD, System shock, Prey and possible cyberpunk 2077 coming out.
You ask Sheria why he/she left out Hybrids. Then you say Hybrids can be important sub genres. Then you ask:

So FPS/RPG is a sub genre, but FPS/Stealth is not?

Way to admit you have a heavily-biased list right off the bat. Maybe should've stipulated that to begin with.

These aren't necessarily my favourites in the genre (I like Fallout 3 more than most of the games on this list, but it's actual main campaign isn't that stellar). However, in no particular order:

Halo 3 -best of the series for me.
007 Nightfire -ridiculously over the top with lots of fun locations and an appropriately campy story.
Borderlands 2 -really funny while still having a lot emotional weight to it.
Bioshock -still the best in the series. However....
Bioshock Infinite -still very good.
Dishonored -someone else put this, so.... if it counts, I agree.

Honestly, nothing else really makes it to the list. I've played a lot of the classics, but I didn't play them in the time period they came out in so they seem to suffer a lot from the whole "it was amazing for its time" thing. One of my friends kind of ruined HL2 for me by making me watch him play through the game and then do the fucking gnome achievement.

10. Red Faction- One of the first PS2 games I ever picked up, and one of the first games of that "graphical quality" that I saw at the time. Everything about this game at the time felt so advanced to me, despite many first person shooters doing the same things. The shooter mechanics weren't even that great, they were average. I'm not sure what about this game stuck with me so much. Again, it might just have to do with it being an early PS2 title for me.

9. Crysis- Immersed me like no other game for years. The amazing visuals, the combination of full action and stealth based gameplay, and still manages to look pretty and play very well.

8. Resistance 2- Now I absolutely love the trilogy, but Resistance 2 was quite the visual upgrade from the first game, and felt smoother. I realize it's a bit simplified compared to the first game, but this game's set pieces still entertain me. The third game was very similar, but it's tone put my off a bit.

7. Metro 2033- I've played through it at least 6 times. I can't get enough of that game's atmosphere, how it draws you into believing this post-apocalyptic world actually exists, and you're a part of it. It's fantastically bleak, and visually stunning at times. The shooting itself feels a bit clunky, but it's perfectly serviceable, especially in the updated version.

6.Half Life 2- Didn't play it until I got it on the Orange Box for PS3, and was one of the first games I bought for the console. I replayed it countless times, and again on PC. I was completely absorbed with it's dynamic gameplay and engaging story. There's not much I can say that hasn't been discussed to death already.

5. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil- No, it's not a perfect game. No, it's not the best first person shooter on it's console. But this game series mean THE WORLD to me. I grew up playing Turok and Turok 2 extensively. I can beat the games in a matter of hours, in a single day. I obsessed over the strategy guide for Turok 2, and I'm absolutely exploding on the inside with excitement waiting for Night Dive Studio's remaster of this game.

4. F.E.A.R.- The second game I ever bought for my PS3. And then again for PC. It's sense of action and shooter gameplay was so awesome to me, the way a single gunfight can completely tear a room and it's walls to pieces, with debris flying everywhere while you slo-mo and kill squads of soldiers on your own.

3. Dying Light- Is this a FPS? There's guns. But they aren't the focus. I don't care. 90 hours. I played this game with multiple friends for just about 90 hours. It looks great, and running around the game's world with parkour is so much damn fun, slaying countless zombies and running scared shitless at night with your friends.

2. Deus Ex: Human Revolution- I'm going to say something controversial. I don't like the original Deus Ex. I find it too ugly, too clunky, and too boring to play. I didn't play it when it came out, and didn't own it until 2010. But it's 2011 game I adore. I love it's visual style, it's (mostly) open ended gameplay, and it's overall story. I love Adam Jensen for reasons I can't explain. Despite the hub worlds being actually quite small, their intricate interiors made it feel like a whole world with tons of options.

1. TBD- Yeah, it's a lazy cop- out, but there are a few first person shooters either recently released or upcoming for release that I genuinely feel like could make my list somewhere. Maybe not number 1, but maybe somewhere in the middle. So consider Deus Ex: HR to be my temporary #1 for now.

Just started a second playthrough of that last night - really good game. It's just a shame the actual guns have barely any ammo, especially when the lurkers in the night come for me.

1) Far Cry - which is also my favourite game across all genres.
.
I enjoyed Far cry 1 first half until trigens came and ruined the whole game. my rating of original far cry gone from 9/10 to 5/10 very quickly. crytek improved greatly on Crysis 1.

Hmm, that's actually a tough list to make after factoring in ALL of the first person (shooter) games I've played over the years, across all platforms. Made harder still by limiting it to only 10. Still, I'll give it a shot, though I'm gonna shorten each to include series and not just individual games as...I simply couldn't confine myself to 10.

1: Half-Life (1, 2, episodes)
2: DOOM (1 - 3, and 2016)
3: Portal (1 and 2)
4: Left 4 Dead (1 and 2)
5: Halo (mostly CE, 3, and ODST)
6: Quake (all)
7: Mechwarrior (2 - 4 + expansions) (what? It counts)
8: Turok (1 - Rage Wars)
9: Timesplitters (1 and 2)
10: Metroid Prime (1 - 3)

Honorable Mentions:
Call of Duty
Goldeneye
Hexen
Perfect Dark
Unreal
Blood
Star Trek Elite Force
Deus Ex
Timesplitters
Riddick

I've....played a lot of first person games. Shooters and otherwise.

I don't think my list is going to be very official considering I start a bunch of games but never finish them. It's not because I don't LIKE these games it's just that other games take up my attention then when I go back, I've forgotten what I'm doing, where I'm going, how to play, etc...So let me fart my opinion onto this aging thread, a thing I meant to do on Tuesday but am only just getting around to:

10 - Halo: Reach
9 - Solider of Fortune 2: Double Helix
8 - XIII
7 - Metroid Prime (Gamecube)
6 - Bioshock
5 - Wolfenstein: The New One
4 - Deus Ex: Human Revolution
3 - Brutal Doom/2
2 - Duke Nukem 3D
1 - Portal

It was hard to get these into a definitive order...I didn't beat some of these either and like all of my other top-10's, it's more than likely going to change sooner rather than later. I haven't played enough of the original Deus Ex to rank it and Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii is utterly unplayable for me so there are a pair of explanations for you.

Aaaaan that's it. No really, it's the only Single Player FPS I can actually remember. I played BF4's campaign, but can only really remember killing whats-her-face. I mostly remember grotesque monsters and using some sort of lighting whip to pull the ugly bastards into spikes and set them up for nut shots. Always go for the nut shots.

I got as far as the Wolfenstein write up and suddenly thought 'wait a minute, is this thread written by... yep- B Cell. Knew it!'

Anyway, for me it goes...

10. Mount and Blade Warband -hey, you can play the game as an archer in 1st person so that's good enough for me. The storyless, living breathing country with dynamic alleigances and clash of personalities going on completely independent of the player really draws you in.

9. Minecraft -admit it. Some can, and will be playing this until the end of time. It's gaming crack.

8. Operation Flashpoint -The only fictional war I've seen in a game where I completely believed it could happen. The overall campaign, and the thinking behind each mission's objectives made perfect sense. And if you've ever played the After Montignac misssion... (shudder) Only then will you know true fear...

7. Unreal Tournament and UT 2004 -an odd choice you might think. They don't really have campaigns, just botmatches. The truth is though, these bots are the best in the business, and provide near endless variety of gameplay in the huge range of both official and custom maps. I've spent longer in these games than many a dedicated singleplayer campaign.

6. Battlefield: Bad Company -anyone who tells you Battlefield can't do decent singleplayer is a fool. Shame about the sequel though...

5. Far Cry 3 - Far Cry has always aspired to have strong singleplayer, but I think most agree it was FC3 where all the elements just clicked in to place the most. Great game.

4. Timesplitters 3 -Call me strange but I could never quite get into the disjointed random missions of TS2- much as I loved the humour. TS3 really nailed it for me though- the unique british style was still there, but now tied together in a proper singleplayer experience.

3. Perfect Dark -Once you unlock everything, it's multiplayer that keeps bringing you back to PD, but what a ride to get there!

2. Deus Ex -To date the only game I ever stayed up until 3am playing a level I had already just completed just to find more secrets. Utterly incredible game.

1. Goldeneye -Anyone who thinks it's the bare-bones multiplayer that keeps people playing Goldeneye 20 years after it came out is an idiot. Even after mastering every aspect of the game, there's enough randomisation and surprises up it's sleeve that keeps Goldeneye's meaty singleplayer missions fresh even today. I used to hate trying to break out of that Bunker jail cell with no weapons before I figured it out... now it's my most played level because it's so unpredictable.
