Unpopular opinions, followed by brief justifications.
-Halo has an impressive story, even if it tells it horribly.
Most of the backstory and whatnot comes from the novels, and really the games are just the edge pieces of a large puzzle. They're not the most interesting part of the whole, but they are a necessary one. If you think that a game needs to be able to tell its story without forcing people to study the extended universe, well, you're right. If it weren't for the fact that I've already done that with Halo, I'd probably dislike it just as much.
-Gimmicks--touch screen, 3D, motion control, et cetera-- need to die off.
This honestly feels self explanatory, but okay. For me, these things all strain one's immersion, not enhance it. Especially with touch screen, you're literally touching the 4th wall, and yet all that does is remind you that it's there. It's like a glass door that's really clean; if you just look at it, you can hardly tell it's there, but when you walk into it, it's abundantly clear.
-Multiplayer needs more localization.
I often don't have access to online gaming, as I can't connect my Xbox to a router nor do I currently have a PS3. Even when I can play online, though, I begin to loathe the experience. There are always game-wrecking things that the game can't do much more than alleviate some, such as lag, latency issues, modders, etc., and it seems everyone online is an internet tough guy. I'd much rather sit in a room with my buddies and, using Black Ops as an example, play some Nazi Zombies for a while; unfortunately, it only allows for 2 players at once, so we have to leave two people by themselves while everyone else just plays with their dick.
-Super Mario Sunshine wasn't a bad game.
Had it relied less on the squirt gun (which was another gimmick that needed to die), it would've been almost as good as Super Mario 64. That, along with dropping the silly storyline and making Bowser a tougher goddamn final boss.
-ODST had the potential of being the best Halo.
A longer development time would've fixed most of what was wrong with it.
The city of New Mombasa wouldn't have suffered as it did from the abundant copy-pasting, which would've made for a much better FPS sandbox. The campaign would've been longer than 3 hours. Competitive multiplayer (with 4 players local, which is something Halo always has). Customization.
