It was doomed to fail from the start. Putting aside the idea that a utopia is nearly impossible, keep in mind that he tried to build this utopia at the bottom of the ocean. Not exactly the ideal place to build a giant city.

With the new Bioshock coming out, I thought it would be nice to hear from all of you.

What you think caused the demise of rapture (other then fontaine okz be creative that is worded and spelt so badly I can't even understand it!).personally, I think it was lack of religion and morals.
It was Adam and Eve.
Get it?
It's a religious reference.

Hey buddy! Don't mess with danzors, he'll rip off your nuts n chew em out. He's craaaaaaazy I tells ya!

To keep on topic, I think raptures demise was due to a lack of decent internet connection. People had nothing to browze so they just... took to the streets.

It was explained in the game (I remember it vaguely). People started fitting themselves with plasmids and as a side effect, some started going insane, then a lot started to, then Andrew hired some militia-thing with Fontaine's help to deal with it and it went out of control.

I said vaguely. :S
Ayup, that's pretty much exactly what went down. Oh, and there was Ryan's underling that went after him and got killed... I liked his voice too.

Oh please.
MAYBE it wasn't such a good idea to have people who live in a confined, cramped space have powers like shooting bees from their hand, or fire. And ammo vending machines everywhere. I couldn't possibly see why this could go wrong.

As we all know, it is the lack of religion that causes people to kill one another.

Objectivism is a sick joke? I think that is enough.

That may seem unnecessarily harsh and inflammatory, as I know some of my fellow Escapians are admirers of Ayn Rand, but it sums up my views on objectivism quite nicely. The arrogance required to hold oneself as separate from the rest of humanity, to consider yourself to be one of Rand's industrialists, the innovator to whom fellow human beings are dead weight, is astonishing, and a society built on such values is going to collapse under the sheer magnitude of its own self-righteous hubris, that is to say its "Ego" (Anthem was required reading way back in 9th grade, and even then, something about Rand rubbed me the wrong way, something apart from her mediocre writing, anyway).
Someone once said that Objectivism and other elitist movements are popular only because the followers secretly (or openly) believe themselves to belong to the "übermensch" class.
I would dearly love to hear about an objectivist that places him/herself in the "parasite" category...

Specifically, the fact that a utopia in which everyone is brilliant and selfishly seeks their own ends is one that will inevitably destabilise. Too much power and too much selfishness, and a lot of people in a very tight space, are a perfect recipe (one among many) for annihilation.

Because Ayn Rand's philosophy is that all utopian cities will fall by their own ideals?
Sigh. Another person who just doesn't get it. Bioshock was made to criticise Ayn Rand's philosophy, not to go along with it.

Andrew Ryan is an anagram for "New Ayn Rand", and he's the corrupt moralist behind the whole creation of Rapture; the pushing of ADAM, the killing of the protesters who he wouldn't permit to leave Rapture, and the hiring of Fontaine were all his actions. He justified those by trying to push freedom and selfishness as equal virtues (as Rand did in real life).

lack of religion and morals couldnt have caused the downfall of a city, but i think the lack of morals led to things that could have ended rapture, such as unethical subject testing,or splicing 2 many plasmids (wich of course led 2 madness) but mostly i think it was the war between fontaine and ryan's splicers

plus religion isnt needed to form a good and functioning soceity, its just a source of morality,a way of getting people to behave.people should be good people because its what is right, not because god says you should

Well they built it on an Ancient Sea Indian Burial Ground, then Nessie came and attacked them, while the Sea Indians broke the glass. Eventually, the whale you see in the pod of the game joined in the assault.

Also rust. They built the city out of iron to save money.
