ive been thinking about buying a new game for the PC, prefferably an FPS, maybe an RTS but for the life of me i dont know what to get. Ive got Crysis and UT3, both great but are beginning to get boring. I figure this is one of the best places to ask because i wont get flamed to hell for no reason and people here generally seem to not be gibbering monkeys...most of you anyway :p

So do tell

Isn't the new Call of Duty game supposed to be pretty good? It sounds like the kind of thing you're after.

If you've not purchased any games other than those noted I can imagine Call Of Duty 4 being a worthy purchase along with The Orange Box.

Why not the Orange Box? It has 5 awesome FPS's. The HL series is one of the best stories in a game. Portal is just plain fun. TF2 is... well I've never played it but I hear it's great as well.

Call of Duty 4, Orange Box, and Counter Strike:Source are the best choices I've got. TF2 is especially fun because the game is just humorous in general. I still get a laugh backstabbing some engineer while his buildings go to ruin.

i am a fan of FPS's the orange box: 4 1/2 out of 5 it will keep you going for a long time and when you finish it you'll want to start it again from the start.

bioshock: about 4 out of 5 great graphics, good story line and there's alot of things to choose from on how you want to kill your enemies and a good story line.

CoD4: unrated, never played it, the demo and trailers diddnt make me interested enough in spending that much money on it.

fear: 2 1/2 out of 5, its a good game for its time but its time has moved on, fun and different from other FPS's i wouldnt say its scary its more to keep you on edge and focused.
it was worth the 25$ i spent on it

the darkness: 3 1/2 out of 5, its good, only to play twice max, story line is ok, game play ok.
good game to hire, not buy

If you like single player FPS and want more than the usual brainless poo, then try:

The Orange Box
Deus Ex (the first one)
System Shock 2
Thief series

If you like multiplayer FPS try:

The Orange Box
Battlefield 2/2142

any suggestions i would have made are already here.
Call of Duty 4 is a great FPS with an excellent story and great gameplay. The multiplayer as well gives the game a lot of replay value.

The Orange Box is essentially the best value for the money. Half Life 2, Episode 1, and Episode 2, are all good games though are repetitive at times like Yahtzee said in his Zero Puncuation review. Portal is great fun as a puzzle game and an FPS. Team Fortress is also fairly decent as essentially a "bugs bunnied" counter strike.

Also, Gears of War is out for the PC i believe. you could give that a try if violence, dark moods, big guns and a bit of gore are your thing.

You know something perhaps The Orange Box isn't the best deal ever for one reason only....They will probably come out with a bundle that includes episode 3 when that comes out......But if you haven't played Half Life 2 it is the best deal currently. Call of Duty 4 is a solid game which you will probably like even if you really only have a passing interest in shooters like me. The Darkness is worth a look if you have a PS3 or 360.

Stalker - hugely underrated pseudo free roaming fps. It's got mild rpg elements, an awesome setting and atmosphere right up the yazoo. Also has a large modding community, a la Oblivion.

For some older titles, you could get Far Cry, UT2004, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, C&C Generals and the expansion, Zero Hour. For the more up to date games, you might want to try C&C3 (Even though it feels like a blend of the first C&C and Tiberian Sun).

I'd definately go with UT2004, though. With a decent Crysis rig you can really get some great visuals out of it and due to the mods out there, the replay value is through the roof. The online community's still alive and very much kicking too.

Oh, and all the other older games I posted have some mods out there for 'em too, though not quite as many as UT2004.

the best way, if possible, would be to download demos.

gamershell.com allows you to download without subscribing and has a pretty good list of all kinds of demos.

I haven't enjoyed any of the latest FPS have to offer so I recently made do with going through Farcry again for the 15th time.

The Dawn of War games are good for RTS. I think there's another expansion pack coming out soon. Graphics are getting a bit dated, but it's well animated, and there's a lot of value to be had from it's single player campaigns.
For FPS, I'd second Oragne Box and Bioshock. Never played Gears on the PC, but the 360 version is amazing. Good, arcadey-feeling shooter, nice and fast but not without some strategy and tactics. If you can run Crysis and UT3, then GoW should run well at good settings.

FPS:

-Stalker is fun but be warned, the retail game is terrible and I advise using mods to make it playeble for a much better experience.
-Am I the only one that actually enjoyed playing Prey?
-Deus Ex is a must play if you haven't already.
-Far cry is a must play as well, it's cheap and fun.. if you ignore the last level
-Hl1 if you haven't played this yet, do it now and use the high texture pack. Expansions as well, you'll at least understand most of hl2 after that.
-Aliens versus predator & aliens versus predator 2. Great games, both of them.
-BF42 with desert combat mod, BFV with poe1 mod, BF2 using either poe2 or forgotten hope 2 mod. The last, fh2 is just released and pretty cool.
-Call of duty 1 sp is still a mustplay if you haven't already, the expansion ( which ALOT of peopel never played ) has terrific multiplayer that rivals and beats that of the newer cod3 in alot of ways imo. You can still find people online for this and there are mods that add ATguns and halftracks.

RTS:

-Age of empires gold & AOE2 are still awesome to this day. I never liked AOE3, don't buy the latest version of a game just because of the graphics when previous versions are better.
-Warcraft III+frozen throne, great campaign and online the custom maps are great fun!
-C&C, C&C red alert 1 are still the best of the series imo. I still really want to play C&C3 for the storyline but I thought the demo was kinda meh so no hurry atm.
-Warhammer 40k, dawn of war + expansions are fun.
-Company of heroes looks great, arcady gameplay though. I suggest you try it at least.
-Settlers III or IV, still incredibly fun to this day and doesn't look half bad. Slower building game if that's your thing.
-CivIV + BTS expansion, addicted to this atm. Turn based build game, incredibly fun to play with a friend.
