Someone who says they're a man but isn't a dick about it ;D

That just rules out manly manly men that are actually the complete opposite of what they think they are.

Because you clarified the differentiation between "male" and "man", I'll forego my usual take that anatomy is all that's necessary to be a man/woman.

With the differentiation I personally interpret "man" to be basically what a male becomes after they "come of age" or "grow up" or whatever. I'd personally peg that with emotional and intellectual maturity, having had either life experiences (like a huge trip to, say, the Himalayas that really changed your thinking, or some other huge landmark event that you were personally intimately/directly involved in) or having had enough small experiences to have a real understanding of yourself and of other people, being respectful and courteous to others, and the most important bit, being independent. You can't be a man fully if you're not living on your own. You can be mostly a man, but not entirely one.

How many bears he's strangled to death.

Whether or not they've chased a deer down, tackled it, and beat it in a fight.

Punched a shark in the face.

Roundhouse kicked a moose.

Managed to kill a hippo without a firearm.

I would say a man is a male that has reached both physical AND emotional maturity (note that physical maturity differs with different cases). A man is a male who takes responsibility. A man who deserves respect, because he treats everyone with respect. Likewise, I would say a woman is a female who has reached physical and emotional maturity, takes responsibility, respects others, etc.

Really, it's about being serious about living life like you mean it, and living a fulfilling life in a way that blesses, not harms, others.

Depends on the cultural environment. Society determines what makes one a "man" or heavily influences the thinking of the individual who decides what makes a "man." It's not my place to say which culture is right about the definition if any at all so It's impossible to say what truly makes a "man." [/cop-out]

Being able to own the decisions you make, and accept the consequences of your actions whether the result is good or bad.

Are you a Human? Are you legally an adult? Are you male? Do you act like an adult? If your answer to all the previous questions was yes, then congratulations, you are a MAN! Or at least that's how I tell whether or not someone is a man or not.

Instead of thoughts and ideas this thread is mostly a collection of people who find themselves clever.
OT: This is a fairly good measure not sure if anyone else posted it but I didn't see it

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

If the bloke from the first HellBoy film is to be believed, it's something to do with the choices you make, even if you're an immortal Demon from another dimension.

I wonder how much of this thread is references and how much is relevant.
