Achievements prove you did it, show everybody you are skilled enough to find every bobblehead and ad a new sense of achievement? heh he?

Anyway I like them because it confirms my success, which is always nice. Games without achievements feel like a step down.

They enhance the experience of those who care without hindering the experience of the nes who don't. They add replayability and challenge to games when used properly(Avatar:TBE or whatever is an example of poorly executed). What's the down side? None.

good point!
Gears of war is bad for the whole "get whatever and get 20 gamer points" thing
Multiplayer stuff is fucking annoyuing tbh, usually its near impossible to get unless u play the game non-stop. resistance 2 for ps3 kind of HALF does that, becuase it has the silver trophy "Gain 1000000 xp" which tbh, is alot, but wont take u THAT long to get as it has a really good multiplayer style. But it does have the trophy "some thing something" *cant rememebr the name, to lazy to turn on the ps3 for reference* which is "Gain the rank of Lieutenant". I play resistance a fair amount, and i have absolutly no idea how many levels there are, but i want that trophy! and tbh, its not a hassle or a chore playing the game to get it. If you enjoy it, do it! People who sacrifice gameplay for trophies are well, boring. basically anyone whoe bought that Avatar game where you can get 1000 gamer points for doing a combo well, either love the game *bullcrappp* or just do it for the points. which tbh, i feel, ruins the game itself.

true. But sometimes people dont need score or something to tell them that they've done well.
This is clearly up for disscusion, so all opinions are valad :)
But i think achievments/tropies area good thing for the future, but we shoudlnt forget the fragile past where people played game because they wanted to chill out and play something to take thier mind of stress or even just escapse to a whole new level of the human mind!
Gaming has endless possibilities!

They add internet drama, and extra cash to rental stores thanks to obsessed geeks. Aside from that, nothing more.

Ya, I definitely don't take games without achievements as a waste of time. In a single player game, it's sometimes fun to go get achievements that require you to do random things.
Like carrying a garden gnome all the way through HL2:Ep2 and launching him to space? =D

I definitly still do that. That's how I relax anymore and honestly I play for the stories for most games. I love an epic tale I am apart of. It's like a movie where I am the hero/villian I decide what to do...kinda. It's very impowering.

Before achievements I played games because they were fun or had an engrossing story line. I like achievements but it seems, at least for me, that I'm compelled to try and get all the achievements I can.

Its not a bad thing but when I see other people on XBL with these massive gamer scores and almost every achievement unlocked for the games they are playing is a bit daunting.

Achievements are nice but I can do without them.

Trophies (in my case) make ordinary games a bit more fun and allow you to appreciate good games to a greater degree (assuming they're well implemented). But it's all about self-control: I try to avoid looking at the list of things to do until I've finished my first playthrough. If you go onto gamefaqs beforehand and memorize everything then it's obviously gonna have a detrimental effect on the overall experience. I won't lie though - I do enjoy the challenge that Platinum offers. I doubt I'd have ever attempted Bioshock or Uncharted on the highest difficulties otherwise. Was it worth it? In terms of my overall existence & the balance of the universe, of course not, but it made me happy for a while.

I also agree with the poster above that multiplayer shouldn't have any trophies or achievements. Or they should at least be amusingly impossible in order that the OCD kids go 'round the bend. How about "maintain a k/d ratio of more than 2.5 for over 12 months"?
i Entirly agree! pretty much the gamer you described is the type of gamer I am! Although i will check out e trophies beforehand, but wont take notice untill the first play through.
Also I dont think I have the patience for the final trophy on uncharted, so many gun battles, so many deaths =(

I know what you mean, the whole fact of, you think your doing well to the standard in your mind, thenb some1 else doing alot better, its a pretty bad feeling! happened to em mannnnny times!
achievements can be about challeneges ect, like trying to find whatever where ever or get a certain amount of headshots with whatever gun in single player can be fun, but to difficult then it becomes daunting and to easy becomes a pisstake!
Where is the middle ground?!

Well, to be honest, many games have had achievements back in the day. Be it unlockable art galleries, a super weapon, or just some silly easter egg. They're all things that you had to "achieve" something to get. But not called achievements per-say All we've done is given them a name, taken away most of the unlockable part and given them a point value to create a silly pissing contest between video-gamers.
Thank you! You've put into words the honest to god truth. :)

Honestly it added alot of replay to my games. I'll always play through a 2nd time if it means i can go ahead and grab a few more ach. Plus it makes me try things i would not normally do such as extra game modes or add challenge to the games by making me only use a certain weapon or beating it on a harder setting.

Achievments in a non competitive atmosphere are good, they push the gamer to do things they normally wouldnt shoot for in a game...like play Gears 2 story mode 4 times...
or ya no once on normal and once on insane...but hey if you want to play it 4 times be my guest
