because it's not balanced in the slightest. Because single player was a joke. Because the game itself is neither innovative nor particularly fun. And the lack of DDS doesn't do it any favors. I don't care if it's popular, darkest of days certainly wasn't and it was shit too.
I know I keep repeating myself, but where are the balance issues? This might be a question of definition, but to me, something is unbalanced when there is no, or at least almost no way of countering it (like say... frost mages in Wow right now) - and I haven't encountered any of those tactics, up til now.
Also, what's so bad about the singleplayer - yes, the story took more than one wrong turn and felt rather michael bayesque, but then, being full of explosions, that is breathtakingly well executed and cinematic explosions, is still more than half the games out there do... sure there are reasons to not like it, and I am fully aware of this game not being the holy grail of fps' - but it's fun, and I daresay, if Mw2 wasn't selling that good, and wasn't advertised that big, there'd be people not liking it and therefore not buying it, but nobody would call it shit, or try to bash it on internet forums on evry single occasion.

The community on the other hand might be a reason - there are some douchebags running around, that's out of question, but can you blame the game for that? It's not like its Iw's fault, that theirs some kids playing their game, whoring for attention, and it's not like Iw would have any chance to do something about it, so that, while being a good reson to not buy, can't really be a reason to hate the game, can it?

I love this game and nothing anyone will ever say can convince me otherwise. However, I guess that people hate it simply because it is very popular and will assure the continuation of the FPS genre for years to come, something that more than a few people would rather not happen. The inclusion of highly overpowered antique shotguns, their akimbo perks, and the Commando perk that allows players to stab other players from 20 feet away is very infuriating, I find it to be absolute bullshit, causes vitriole as well. However, I think that alot of people need to get over themselves and stop this extreme hatred.

MW2 did nothing to create so much hatred against itself. Its the community who play it (most of the community sorry) that make everyone hate it cause they all go on like a bunch of A-grade US army wannabees

Im just sayin

I don't like the multiplayer because it frustrates me more than provides fun. Noobtubes, knifers, killstreaks...
I don't go out of my way to bash it, as I can see why someone could like it, but I'm no fan of it.

Well, the game is good, but has issues.
The story is, like previously said, worn out and unbelievable. Some of the levels are irritating, and it can ruin parts of the story. Despite this, i enjoyed the overall story and actually wanted to see how the characters had to meet the challenge ahead of them.

The split screen was better that Cod 4 (being able to make your own classes), and the spec ops made multi-player better for a bit, and allowed me to have an additional challenge on top of the campaign.

The online was the main reason i and many others bought it. The game is filled with tiny exploits that after weeks of searching, someone will eventually find, and some of the weapons are slightly un-balanced or unreal (both of model 1887's...ugg), but it is still fun to play. No matter how many times me or my friends rage quit, we still come back to play again because it is the best shooter out right now. This can and will be disputed, but infinity ward did a great job making this game, and even if there are issues, the rewards will outshine the complaints until something better comes out.

It's not balanced in any way from the maps to the killstreaks, to the amount of health, and to the spawns; I condsider it one of the worst games ever made not just because of the bad quality, but because of it's wasted potential. The hate is towards the multiplayer and nothing else.

...to deserve all the hatred it gets?

Sure we can all agree, it didn't reach the extremely high standards of it's predecessor.
Yeah, about that-
I think the problem here is that COD4 was horribly overrated, and after the hype train it's sequel generated, a lot of people were expecting something that COD4 didn't even come close to living up to.

COD4 was a short, highly linear and overly scripted single-player experience with shallow gunplay and respawning enemies instead of decent AI or level design. Its story was uninteresting pap, devoid of any real characters or engaging narrative. Hell, ODST was more of a complete single player game.

Attached to it was a broken multiplayer that relied on twitch more than anything else and with kill streak awards that ensured that once a team started losing, it became almost impossible for them to do anything.

There are a lot of things that wind up like this. Like the Halo sequels, for example, being so much worse than the first one according to some people, despite being mostly the same except for adding features and having much better balance and level design. Or Windows 7 being loved while Vista was hated, despite being actually kind of difficult to tell apart if you aren't told which one you're using.

I suppose it does help an observer tell the difference between actual opinion and the echo chamber.

Well the Single player I really enjoyed, even though it was only 7 hours long on the hardest difficulty. Most of the spec-ops missions were also very good, It's the multiplayer that ruins it.

These are my experiences with multiplayer (I've played a total of ~9.5 days and have had the game since before launch):

Since day 1 the multiplayer has been one of the buggiest multiplayers that I have seen, and for a while it seemed that every update the put out brought about at least 5 more glitches (They seem to be getting better though...). And they also managed to make the spawn system even worse than it was in CoD4, which astounds me. There is also the lag/connection problem, the majority of the time when you try to join a game with multiple people in your party you will sit there for 1-5 minutes waiting for a game to pop up and start, and if you play alone you almost always get thrown into a game in progress where the team you are put on is inevitably losing and has at least a Pavelow in the air. Since the game came out there have been multiple game breaking glitches (Javelin, Care Package, Private Match Lobby) all of which made the game almost unplayable for the duration that it took IW to fix it. I am also not a fan of getting the 3 messages a day from the 10 year old trying to scam me into joining a "10th prestige lobby."

With all that said I still enjoy playing the game, as long as I'm with friends. I have gotten more pissed at MW2 than I have with any other game in my life, and so have all of my friends, but it is the game that we all love to hate.

I have no idea. I for one, rather enjoy the game.
Me too. It is actually my favorite game. I do understand the no dedicated server thing though, being that I started out on the PC.

Ha, personally I like it more than the first game. I don't know why, it just seems to flow better. I can't really quantify it. Also, my uni has blocked the multiplayer from the network, so I have yet to play that.

I would disagree with your statement that it didn't live up to CoD4. It didn't live up to the HYPE, but I think it's definitely a much better game and I enjoy it a lot. Although this is coming from someone who didn't like CoD 4 and ignored the hype completely, so maybe my opinion on it is too unbiased to matter. Anyways, I think it has the same thing going for it as halo, where it's a huge success, while not entirely original, and because of its success a fuck ton of other games try to copy it and it's labeled as generic. So the angry nerds who would normally just say "this game kinda sucked" and move on feel obligated to rage against it because they think it makes them "cool" to hate something the mass population liked.

-Removed dedicated servers
-Forced Steam
-Buggy
-No modding
-Was priced higher than the first while...
-Not being that special compared and has...
-Higher review scores than it deserves and a higher popularity than 'original' games.

Those tend to be the general arguments/reasons people have.

I love both games, and play the multiplayer on both frequently. PS3 for modern warfare 2, and PC for modern warfare 1 :)

I don't like it mainly because of the unwarranted hype. The fact that the game can masquerade as being some godly creation and spark anticipation prior to its release not unlike that regarding Halo 3, and yet the game that came out is bland as hell, the storyline is crap, and the multiplayer was sub par, mainly because the concept has much more potential than was achieved. It just doesn't play smoothly, not control wise, but the actual gameplay. The online just wasn't programmed well. First off, if you are hiding in a bush, people can still see you since you're outline is so pronounced and different from non moving objects in the game world. It just doesn't work. Also, it was like IW couldn't decide which to make better, the campaign, or the multiplayer, and so the lack of a committied decision appears to have spawned something with 50% of the effort on multiplayer and the other half on the campaign, and those games should be, no matter how much the multiplayer seems to be the main feature, all about the single player. The campaign IS the game. The campaign is what makes games what they are, and so if they really wanted a multiplayer focus, first off make it halfway decent and then give it a respectable title, don't just milk the marketing of the franchise. Now, I understand that's legitimate marketing, but games are art forms just as movies are, and so actually make a respectable piece.

EDIT: I mean, sure, I don't hate the game, per sé, but I just can't find it as upper tier as its worshipers like to say. It's mediocre at best, and should be treated as such.

Nothing really. It's the company's decision about the PC version that generated the most hate.

But since I only bought it for the console, I'm fine.

And for everyone complaining -
about knifers: If they are 20 feet away from you and you haven't killed them, you're dead no matter what. Settle down.
about shotguns: Lever-action shotguns come in, and you don't complain about how cheap the automatic one is? Really?
about akimbo: The reason for akimbo is because the weapons would suck without it. Ever tried using the 1887 or Rangers with just FMJ? They suck.

Cause its popular and I'm a poor student who can only afford one game a month, assuming I can get through this next 50 pages of work before the next oh-so-hardcore/cool/orgasmic is released.

Wait, what the hell am I doing here?

I played this wall to wall for about three months until we hit the point in which teenage pillocks ruined the experience. My mates were near to returning it and I raged so hard I bit my 360 controller one evening!

Now I have switched to BFBC2 and it's great so far.

So I would say it was enjoyable and yet the mutliplayer can kill the enjoyment thanks to the idiots so hate the players not the game! Me included, though I have made my peace with the gods of wargames!

Wow, the console versions have dedicated servers?
