What did you give up for Lent?

I mean even if you're not religious it's not a terrible idea to give up a minor vice for a little while. Could improve health, could give you a better appreciation of what your life is like with or without that thing.

As a non religious person that's what I have always taken from lent. A time for small sacrifices in our lives to appreciate the sacrifice others make or have made for our ways of life. As well as a touch of understanding for those who have no choice in going without.

Not being religious doesn't have to be petty.

I don't understand this comment in the context of the thread at all. Where did anyone say/imply being non-religious is petty? Also, sure giving up something can be helpful for emotional/psychological reasons, and possibly health, depending on what you give up. But who cares if it's during Lent? The timeframe is irrelevant to us without religion. You could just as easily do the "lent thing" mid summer, or during winter and find as much benefit from it.

Things were said that I consider petty. This isn't R&P, so I won't go into it.

And yes, it can be done anytime but giving up a vice is easier with support, an entire community who practices lent is support. Also is a tiny push to do so. It's not hard for "I could do that anytime I liked! " to become "I never got around to doing that".

:)

I would counter with them being, or at least saying things you feel were petty, has nothing to do with being non-religious. That's just someone acting petty (by your standards). I'm not making any comment on what others might've said, nor do I care, simply pointing out that the two things aren't connected. Asshattery is an equal opportunity thing after all. :p

I only celebrate the holidays where I have fun and get free things

giving things up for a holiday seems backwards to me

Dostoyevsky is edgy now? News to me.
Raskolnikov was pretty damned edgy...

Also, giving up meat. Will only eat honey and apple grilled cheese sandwiches and coffee for 40 days.

I gave up my ignorance of what Lent is... today... right after I finished reading this thread.

On a marginally more serious note, I also gave up sugary foods and eating out at 80% of my favorite restaurants, and then consequently gave up about 16 pounds in the last three weeks. I could mark that off as a small Lent commitment. It would be real amusing if my father, who got me started on this diet, was doing this for Lent all along.

I'm sure, if you're a silly Catholic. :p

OT: Nothing. Being a Lutheran means it's an option, and something that you can do if you want to.

So, I'm not giving up.

Maximum edgelord.

Also, since when is refusing self-denial suddenly edgy? I was baptised Roman Catholic ... I don't suffer eternally for saying; "Nup. Par~tay~!"

The Pope told me it was okay. Catholics got rid of eternal damnation ages ago. Unlike heathen Protestants I'm covered whether I'm right or wrong about God. Catholics have been increasingly chill over the centuries...
Don't worry. Nothing edgy about choosing your own way to live your life.

On the other hand, using the religious equivalent of "So what are you doing this month?" to launch into an anti-religious tirade is another thing entirely.

Well, I mean, I didn't know it was Lent but I didn't smoke yesterday.
Just for yesterday though, the objective is to stop after Emerald City Comic-Con this weekend.

I forgot about Lent starting... I'm a really bad Catholic.

Honestly probably going to not give something up and instead focus on getting my life back together. Months of moping around and stuck in a funk means I've barely been a functional "adult."

I am a silly Catholic, so I think we're good on that front.
