I HATED IT. Over hyped hollywood blockbuster. Watch spoony's review, I agree with almost everything that guy says in it.

I quite liked it, although district 9 was much better imo.

The story may have been unoriginal and some of the characters and vehicles were recycled from Cameron's aliens (directors style perhaps), the cgi was very good and the actors were excellent.

It was a bit too long and dragged at times, but it was necessary to flesh out the relationship of the two main characters.

They could've reduced the number of casualties/fatalities by hiding in the trees lying in wait rather than
charge head on at the ground units

Good movie. Special effects are completely fantastic of that there can be little debate, and a good use of 3D as well.

As everyone seems to point out with annoying smugness it is a basic lifting of other movie and book plots into space. Like Moviebob says can we stop pointing this out with such relish? I mean it should be mentioned, but it has evolved into something different altogether. When people say "It's just dances with wolves (etc.) in space" I've taken to saying "Oh I've never seen [Insert comparison movie here]. What's it about?" because people are tending to just recycle the arguments they've heard.

It does an OK job of telling its story, and has some good action scenes. For me it's the effects that makes it special, and the plot does well to advance the movie so we can see more of the painstakingly rendered vistas of floating mountains (which only slightly piss me off because they look so nice) and forest creatures.

James Cameron has plans for the franchise, and since it's done so well there is going to be a sequel. I imagine it will be 30 minutes long and involve beautiful scenes of the planet being destroyed from space by the Humans.

I liked it. The story was pretty standard but it was told well. It wasn't flawless but it was certainly good enough and everything that wasn't all that good was more than made up for by the visual treat that Avatar is.

If Avatar is to be judged solely on eye-candy alone it still beats a Hell of a lot of pretty sub-par blockbusters that have been on offer this year.

It a Game Changer. Yes the story is rote and many of the characters are archtypical, though it did it in an interesting way, but in the end its not about the plot. Avatar is basically a chance for Hollywood to show of E-Motion Capture, the motion capture/cgi technology that brought the moon of Pandora and the Na'vi to life, and how 3D can be used succesfully, something Cameron has been saying since 2003.

The story was pretty crap and far too long but the special effects (3D) were worth it. Don't know if it'd be half as good in 2D.

Also; Unobtainium?

No. Just... No.

Often times the best movie and books are those with the most simple plot, recycled for centuries now and done over and over till it seems not a single original idea is left. But the blunt truth is that we continue to retell these same simplistic story not because there are no other idea, there are plenty, but because these are the story which truly resonate within people and have often profound effects.

We retell them because they're the story we *want* to hear and remember. And so it becomes less a matter of how original a story is so much as how well it is presented to the audience. I think this is something Cameron realizes.

Is Avatar a blatant retelling of the classic Pocahontas style tale, a story which didn't even start with Pocahontas but goes back hundreds if not thousands of years further? Damn right it is, and it did it amazingly well. The movie had its flaws, but I loved it. Perhaps not my favorite movie of the year, but it's up there with the best no doubt. The way the world of Pandora was brought to life is simply amazing and Avatar's massive success will only encourage others to take risks and try to flex their creative imaginations.

Hell, in a few years instead of calling it the 'Pocahontas' style story younger generations might be calling it the 'Avatar' one instead. And so the torch is passed and an old story once again becomes new...

So I'll establish the butcher's bill by then.

Definitely worth the watch in my opinion, however I think seeing it in 3D at a cinema that isn't specialised in it was a bad idea.

It was good, could've been better. Depite the story being stupidly overdone and cliché, this time it was done right, which I feel was a big advantage for this movie.
I would've loved some more "backstory" on the humans and earth, and know why it was so important for them to get this metal they wanted, and just have that in mind, so you could better understand all these actions they did. Because to me, the humans were just dickheads, without clear reasons for being so desperate and cruel towards the Na'vi.
Instead 80% of the focus was on how Sully and Neytiri fell in love, although it being a believeable love story, I would've liked to, as I sad, be more informed when stepping into this story.

And I think it could've been better as a book. But it was still a good, not brilliant, movie.

The vast majority of the criticisms it has received are valid. Cliche, preachy, Dances with Wolves, mighty whitey etc etc.

In spite of this, it was still definitely worth seeing. Well executed, well performed and so very pretty.

I really liked the colonel. Stereotypical to the max indeed but a perfect counterpoint to the hippyish sensibilities of Sigourney and friends. Also
when he kicks the door in and starts shooting at the thopter without a mask is sweet!

I agree with this, that was really badass.

The movie was great, and the 3D was really cool, too.

I'm pretty sure the only reason they wanted the stuff was because of how much it sold for.

It's a basic storyline with basic character archetypes. What's utterly breathtaking about it is the action, the visuals and the universe in which it is set.

It is a gorgeus piece of entertainment, and a showcase of what action movies will one day become.

It's not high culture and it's not the best film ever made. But in some ways, it's the best film I've ever seen.

I have read a lot of reviews and it is supposed to be this god of a movie that is the best thing to happen to the big screen, however I think that it is an average movie. Acting and the story line are OK the only amazing thing about it was the Visual effects.
