What did you want to grow up to be as a child?

I have always said: a rockstar, or a race car driver.
To be more specific:
- A drummer in a heavy metal/jazz band
- A rally driver/drift competitor/time attack or anything along those lines

Fortunately, I had a brief taste of all of the above, but just not enough to make a life-long profession out of either. Could be worse, I guess...

Wanted to be an MMA fighter or other professional fighter for a while, but gave that idea up as the lasting injuries can be fairly crippling, from early on in life.

A vampire. Fuck yeah. Tell me that wouldn't be an awesome career? My parents certainly did...

I also wanted to be an astronomer, a herpetologist, and a paleontologist. But then my grades in science started to plummet and I forgot everything about those subjects.

At first I wanted to be an astronomer - my father had bought me a lot of books about the stars and the universe and I was fascinated by pulsars, neutron stars, moons, rings and the sun. I found it amazing that it the sun is so large and so dense that it actually takes light created in the centre thousands of years to reach the surface.

When I was about 12 years old, I realized that 1) Most of the really amazing stuff is so far away that I'll never get to it in my life time and 2) Physics could be used to build lasers and rockets and potentially space-cables. So I wanted to be a physicist.

Then, when I was 15 to 16, I started to read books on genetic manipulation and the huge mind-boggling potential of molecular biology to do good. Microbes could potentially be engineered to leach metals from the waste products of mining, or they might be used to synthesize chemicals or potentially even be used as ultra-sensitive sensors. Also, the possibilities of using GMO's to help the environment or even terraform Mars, pushed me into biology, and that's where I've stayed. I realized my child-hood dream of becoming a research scientist (although I don't quite have my Ph.D yet and won't for some years to come), in that I have done research in the field of molecular biology. I'm happy with my career choice - I stuck to it, I worked hard for it, and I achieved it.

So the inner child within me is happy, if a little disappointed at some of the sheer drudgery that goes on in science. While I am happy doing science, and while I will defend to the death the scientific method, I will say that it's not quite what I thought it would be.
