Whilst Im not an American I find Al Murray to be an obnoxious, untalented hack- a Bernard Manning or Jim Davidson for the modern age.

EDIT= To stop the constant requotes Im gonna put my response to the inevtiable point that people will raise.

Personally I find it hard to sometimes spot the "parody" aspect, which is supposed to involve exaggeration too the point of absurdism, Murray often just repeats the same old racist nonsense with only a smile to tell you he's trying to be funny.

UGH there are two names I never wanted to hear again......
Al Murray is ok but his whole act is just built on a parody of British patriotism.

He's kind of the opposite of Peter Kay whose whole act is "remember this, wahay!"

As an American (who's married to a Brit), I find him entertaining. Don't worry, I know he's only about as typical as the fat, lazy beer drinking, bumbling American dad, if that makes you feel any better. :)

Difference is Al Murray's 'Pub Landlord' persona is a parody of that stereotype. It doesn't actually represent his own views on nationality and patriotism. Bernard Manning was just a racist.

Remember that it's all an act. Al Murray is actually a very intelligent person, he portrays a biggoted pub landlord and cuts really close to the bone sometimes. I find his stand up funny, but his presenting is dire.

I am curious, as to why you specifically want to know what Americans think about him. Since the video is making fun of hardcore Christians and creationists I'm wondering if perhaps you think American are all religious nuts and are interested in seeing us go off the handle at this 'blasphemous' humor.

Got news for you sadly religious nuts don't typically hang out on video game forums nor are they limited to the USA.

Personally its sometimes hard to tell with him, parody involves exaggeration to the point of absurdism, Murray often just repeats the same old racist nonsense with only a smile to tell you he's trying to be funny.

And OP if your looking for good comedy that takes the piss out of religion Id reccommend Tim Minchin, especially The Pope Song- once showed it too a Catholic friend of mine who was really not impressed.

I'm not trying to be racist I'm trying to get an honest opinion has I stated before. If you feel offended get the fuck of the Internet because trust me one video isn't as bad as a website dedicated to being racist.
There's no need to over react to that degree. He raised a perfectly valid point, in a perfectly reasonable way.
Jeebus. Relax guy.

OT - I much prefer Al Murray's shows on World War 2.

You're gonna get quoted for this a ton of times you know. The Pub Landlord is a fictional persona deliberately made to be an obnoxious knuckle-dragging neanderthal. The actual guy himself is very highly educated and a bit of a toff.

I'm British and find most things funny but Al Murray... no. Just... no. His entire character is a caricature of the kind of obnoxious pub-going asshole you'd never want to meet anyway, so playing it over-the-top just makes it even more annoying.

He's right up there with Peter "remember when this happens?" Kay in terms of people I will never find funny.

Hehe, yeah Tim Minchin is great. I sent the 'Taboo' video to a ginger friend on Facebook :D

Yeah I know, contemplating putting my response to that point in the original post.

Eh, he's ok. Nothing special. I suppose it'd be funnier if you hated the things he was pretending to be.

Agreed. Rather than coming across as an actor adopting a (whoa, 5 As in a row) persona for entertainment, it seems more like he's just a scandalously racist bloke who they stick up on stage.

I used to think Al Murray was a right twat when I was a kid.

Now that I understand that its parody I just think he's a little bit of a twat. Not very funny, and annoying. I did like the piece linked to in the OP though, I guess he's ok in small doses. I'm English by the way.
