I watched the newest ZP and made me wonder. What do British people think about Austin Powers? Do you find it funny? Does it offend you in any way?

I'm not British, but I enjoy it once in a blue moon, when I feel like watching something mindless and perverted.

It's an American film attempting to poke fun at Britain's culture.

LOL
I thought it was more a spoof of all the old school Spy flicks. That makes a bit more sense. Lol.

When I was only youthful, I thought it was fantastic. I've since grown bored of it, but I've never once found it offensive.

British people probably tink about what everyone thinks about: men think about sex and how to get it, women think about how to use sex to get men to do stuff for them.

Even though i'm american, i still feel the need to mouth off about my opinions, as i'm a self-important twat. Comes with being american, you see.

The first movie, International Man of Mystery, was brillance. It was wonderfully witty in both poking fun at spy films and sheer, mindless absurdity. Even the romance sub-plot, which i hate seeing shoved into every comedy movie since the genre is supposed to be about humor and not lovey-dovey heart angst, was enjoyable since they didn't focus on it overly long and they still had the time to make tit and cock jokes. All in all, i believe the first Austin Powers movie was a classic, and i find it hard to believe that anyone could hate it.

The second movie, The Spy Who Shagged Me, not so much. There was some charm to be had, but most of the jokes were too crude to even pretend the movie was classy. Still enjoyable, but a little over-done.

Thie third movie, Goldmember, is even worse. They stopped trying to be witty and went with every joke they could think of, regardless of tact. I still laughed at it all the same, but i can, at least, admit it was a crappy movie.

As for how brits feel, they probably take it with dry annoyance. The fact that some yank actor is doing a brittish immitation, yet has the gall to not cross-dress while he does it probably rubs them a little raw, but not enough to get most up in arms about it.

There was the fourth Austin Powers movie where Mike Myers takes the jokes from the first three put into one very bad movie called The Love Guru.

I found the first pretty funny, it's not something I would bother watching again but then that covers pretty much any film I've seen.
As for the British thing...I saw it as making fun out of spy movies and 'the swinging 60's' British pop culture, which included spy movies & TV series' like The Saint and The Avengers, not British culture par se (should that have a - in it?).

Do Americans seriously think that we Brits are that thin-skinned?

Believe it or not, we very rarely take ourselves seriously. I doubt there's much that would get a national outcry out of us. Even if you made a cartoon about Princess Diana going back in time to crash her car into Winston Churchill and assault Queen Elizabeth with a burning Union Jack.

In fact, I think South Park already did that.

I absolutely love it. They poke fun at spy films more than the culture of the English, however (not British; Britain includes Scotland, Wales, and England, and whilst they have a Scottish person in the second film, I feel the whole thing has a more English feel overall (tea, crumpets, etc.)).

The thing I enjoy most about it is that they have *good* British accents, instead of the rubbish ones American film makers always put in their films. Also, it has fantastic 'British' humour.
