Asterix and Obelix. Definitely. Their films and comics are among my most treasured possessions... hell, I even own special editions of the comics bound in heavy brown leather.

Tintin is pretty damn good, plus Captain Haddock, Calculus, and the Tompson/Thompson are some of the funniest characters in popular culture.

But I'm going to have to go with Asterix & Obelix, because, well, when you get right down to it, it's pretty much pratfalls, slapstick, and weirdly twisty serial-style plots. A&O, on the other hand, has some splendid wordplay and historical/cultural gags that just tickle me. Also, it's got some great artwork going for it, while Tintin's never quite appealed to me as strongly.

Nevertheless, they're both great, and I plan to see the Tintin movie when it comes out.

Tin Tin was something I grew up on and only ever glimpsed Asterix and Obelix in the school library once or twice. Actually with Tin Tin it was the supporting cast I rather liked.

I would say Versus thread, but I pity anyone who manages to argue about bleedin Asterix vs Tintin.

I always preferred Asterix and Obelix myself, but I love them both.
I know, it's painful.
I kind of want to edit the OP to make it not a versus thread.
Simply remove the very little comparison that was made and write a little more about both of the comics(?) and tada, goodbye versus thread hello I'm a fan of this thing thread!

Anyway, I've always read a lot more Asterix myself though that was mainly from a lack of Tintin at the library. I feel Asterix does have more quality and relevance to the world with how it is written, Tintin always felt a little detached from anything I could relate to.

That's cruel, I love both and I have both series completely at home ... no, wait, actually my father lost some of the Tintin ones. Cursed be he!
Still, I know all of them and I really can't say which one is the better one. So sue me, I'm going with "both"!

Never read Tintin, but Asterix is just awesome.

I love how they turned that war torn part of history into humour, and how they never actually kill anyone, they just give 'em a good thumping :D

Time to drink some magic potion!!!

I'm gonna have to go with Asterix, which I've understood far more of. They were seriously fun to read in French class.

Asterix and Obelix. I was first introduced by my Mom, who had a few in french for her High School class, but I could only read the three engish one's she had. But Tintin is a close second.

Tintin!!
It's fantastic! All through my younger years I read the books, watched the TV series.
When I went to France last I came back with Tintin posters, postcards and a tablet thing, all of which are now framed and on my wall. I've got a pretty decent collection of Tintin stuff.

Damn this is actually a lot thougher then I would have expected...... Tintin takes it though... but only just.

last year when my mum donated all of our old comics I only mourned the loss of our Tintin collection. I love that little guy and his dog.

Ehhhh hard to pick one. Asterix & Obelix are a lot more funny, but Tintin had this great adventurous feel to it.

Screw it, I ain't picking one, I just want both.

But A&O had something Tintin did not have; 2 absolutely awesome movies, Astérix et Obélix contre César and Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre. Gods I loved those flicks. Just look at it, it's so cheesy:
3:23: IMMINENT RAPE!!!

And Cleopatra...well, one thing needs to be mentioned really:

That's one lovely woman right there.

Asterix and Obelix are better. Tintin really started out bad. (Tintin in the land of the sovjets is the worst comic book ever). Asterix even has witty names (like two germans called Tonic and Colatic, and a frankish cook called self-servix).

Tintin throws some paranormal stuff (like living mummies) into most of its stories, which is fun for once. But after a while it just becomes something stupid (another magic idol? come on!).

Asterix only used fantasy twice: once in the form of their magic potion, and once in a story with benevolent aliens (who try to steal the magic potion to secure it from a race of malevolent aliens, who would use it to kill yet other races of aliens.)

And tintin really disappointed me numerous times. He kicks a russian farmer for no reason at all, and he can't stay on a vehicle for five minutes without crashing it. even a beautiful brand new car he paid a lot of cash for is wrecked immediately. And he acts racist in Congo. Suddenly he goes all philanthrope in China. I mean, what is going on with that guy? Mood swings?
