For the past few years essentially all the star wars games have been bad to average. I am looking forward to the old republic as Kotor is one of my Favorite games.
So what do you fellow escapists think needs to be done?
Personally as is the general all we need is a true battlefront 3 and i will be happy for the next while
I think it's one of those things where the Star Wars liscence does not guarantee quality, you need good writers/designers behind it. Both Bioware and Obsidian were pretty good teams in their own ways (despite Obsidian's problem with bug hunting). Most of the teams doing Star Wars games wind up not impressing me much for whatever reason. I haven't thought "OMG so and so developer is making a Star Wars game, they can really do well with the liscence".
What's more the bar for the universe has gotten pretty high. Simply letting someone swing a lightsaber, or fly a fighter isn't that big a deal any more in of itself, and what's more even with new graphics you've seen games like the old "X-Wing" and "Tie Fighter" games that nailed the gameplay so perfectly that unless you can make a game just as responsive, or somehow improve on those controls and handling, real fans are going to be pretty disappointed.
The upcoming Old Republic game is something I'm looking forward to, as much because of who is doing it, as because of the liscence. If someone told me that say Funcom was doing a Star Wars MMORPG I wouldn't be anywhere near as excited, nor have the same faith that they would be able to do something amazing with the property.
My only real problem with Old Republic has mostly been some of the game design desicians. It seems like the developers seriously favor the Sith side, and have been putting far more effort into them design wise, and it shows in how cool they are making them out to be. Going by what I've seen before, it appears that the game is heading for the same problems that hit WoW and Warhammer Online with game imbalance/favoritism towards the "evil" side of the spectrum. I imagine that as Penny Arcade referred to rolling Alliance as one of the biggest jips in gaming, we're probably going to see similar comments from outside observers (players will always laugh about such things and call complainers nubs even if they are right) sometime after Old Republic launches... I just get that vibe.
Still, we'll see what happens.
I think in the end George Lucas needs to be a bit pickier about who gets the liscence. Put some thought into product quality as opposed to how much someone is going to pay for the liscencing fees. Star Wars always had a lot of tacky junk attached to it (on a lot of levels) but I think it's never too late to start some quality control, especially when it comes to video games.
