I personally believe this question can go into two distinct directions,
Assuming there is no god, there is no "true" meaning to life. Only what we say is the meaning. Hence the saying "Purpose implies design"
If there is god the question becomes very hard seeing as there may be a "true" answer, and if there is, we wont really know it, so it is still an unknown, but there is a possibility that there is one real answer.
If I had to guess what the meaning of life is, which pretty much amounts to saying whatever I please since it is an opinion that really can't be disputed unless it relies on something that is proven false, I would say it is to be happy, and to leave a positive imprint on the world, no matter how small.
42 is not a valid answer.
