I would have to go with Sphinx and the cursed Mummy. It was something of an innovative game when it came to the Mummy segments (The Sphinx segments played like a game trying way to hard to be LoZ). It was lined up perfectly for a sequel, but we never got one.

Half life and Psychonauts are not. If you insist they are, I'm going to have to ask you to step out of the room.
They aren't sleepers, but they are Cult Classics (OK, maybe not Half Life, so replace with Beyond Good and Evil and Fatal Frame). I agree that Shadow of the Colossus is a sleeper hit, as are the Clock Tower games.

Yes, I love that game! Although I wish Okami had sold more so Capcom wouldn't have insanely closed down Clover.

Devil Survivor struck me as a sleeper hit. Don't know why maybe because I don't pay attention to release dates. I have a feeling Strange Journey will be the same way.
Other than that maybe the Wild Arms series but that could be I got into the series fairly late

Phoenix Wright I think even has the words cult classic on the box (though don't hold me to it)
Hotel Dusk too
Hmm Suda 51 and Fumito Ueda games are, I'd say.
Golden Sun has it's own little cult following
Okami
Klonoa games
maybe?

Beyond Good and Evil is a classic.
As is Silent Hill 2 and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

As for a sleeper hit...
hmmm...
I think I'll go with Audiosurf.
It may not be the most sophisticated game in the world, but for an indie game to get THAT many sales in such a short time after its release, and I don't think anyone expected much from it... so I think that qualifies as a sleeper.

I guess System Shock 2 doesn't count...

Arcanum and Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines, which were both made by Troika. Fate just hated that company. I can understand if the steampunk in Arcanum didn't appeal to everybody, but Bloodlines was a roleplaying vampire shooter using the Half-life 2 engine set in a semi-open LA. And yet it sold like shit.

What about Timesplitters? Does that count since it's a series? It's never really got the notoriety of Halo or other FPS's, but it seems to have a good niche following.

I've said it once and I'll say it again:
War of the Monsters for the PS2. It's great, but no one I talk to has heard of it.

I guess BFBC and Myth. Those weren't high profile games when they came out.

Freedom Fighters.

I asked for a sequel and got Kane and Lynch. Fuck you, Io Interactive.

Freedom fighters is absolutely amazing, have it on the gamecube, what a top top game. was gonna be my suggestion, tell you what it still is.

As for classics, i'd go with cannon fodder and Speedball 2.

Disgaea is my favorite cult video game series. The Tales series is a mainstream line of games with a cult following
