In my mind, these are what is ruining modern gaming.

The real is brown thing, being a big fan of good art design and colors. Also, games with tacked-on single player that are mainly focused on online multiplayer. I can understand a multiplayer-focused shooter, it's just annoying when single-player experiences get the shaft. I'll abstain before I sound like a blind, raving nostalgic (slightly addressed below).

On a note that isn't really a problem with new games, I wish more games were 2D. I'll admit that the 16-bit era is a bit of a sweet spot for me, and games I really find charm in tend to be sprite-based.

I wish Trophies and achievements had never come along. I love getting them, and love racing my friends to the next rank, but I've caught myself sometimes looking at old games and going, "I don't want to play that. It doesn't have any (insert choice reward here)." I kick myself and play the game anyway, but they sort of killed a little bit of fun for me.

Also, I miss the RPGs, Japanese and others, where you learned stuff that had filled in tiny bits of info, but weren't important to the story. Figuring out who Squall's and Rinoa's parents were, going on an entire sidequest to learn about Yuffie, talking to Candaras and discovering the Vong have been in the galaxy for centuries...RPGs today feel like they're missing those sidequests and information bits. Mass Effect and FFXIII are prime examples to me.

I'm tired of every game being a reskin of every other. God dammit, make something original. I don't care if its good, just give me something NEW.
It's easy to complain about a lack of innovation, but it's pretty damn hard to come up with an original idea that will actually become popular or be published. Of course there is the indie route, but that requires true devotion to gaming, since I doubt most indie devs make much money.

OT: Hard or annoying achievements. I'm an achievement whore, so it pisses me right the fuck on off when a game wants you to collect a thousand flags, sprays, boxes, steam-powered dildos, or whatever. Especially when 10/45 or so achievements are all collecting 100 of something. (I'm looking at you Assassin's Creed. You can fuck right the hell on off.)

I mean, I want to get every achievement in games I really enjoy. But just try and get Aperture Science in The Orange Box without getting the desire to murder a school of puppies. Especially when you get 9/18 done and then the game decides you didn't do any. Oh dear, I think I'm ranting now.

I can't afford them, and the new PC games have officially surpassed my graphics card. God knows when I'll be able to afford a new one...

1. Emphasis on multiplayer kills singleplayer. except for RPG's, but they've also been getting less original.

2. What happened to Nintendo hard? I liked that.

3. FUCK. REALISM. I play games to get away from that shit.

Very rarely do I buy a game today that isn't very easy or very short or both. It feels like no one takes the time to properly play-test a difficulty curve anymore, and companies see nothing wrong with charging $60 for a six-hour experience if the graphics were up to snuff.

The worst part is how complicit all the reviewers have become in this. I can't count how many glowing reviews feature phrases akin to "short but sweet" or "a little too easy in some parts" - always with nary a legitimate impact on the final rating.

Yes, THEIR COST.
It's still cheaper than it was in the days of the SNES (FFVI new was $99. FFXIII was $59)
I'll just be an annoying ***** and say that even at initial retail price of both titles FFVI was MUCH more bang for the buck (and IMO still is today).

Lack of local multiplayer, plain and simple. For example, I haven't purchased a skateboarding game in quite some time, so when Skate 3 came out just a while ago, I felt like it was perfect timing! Unfortunately, the game completely axed local multiplayer in return for more robust online play (at least, that's what Wikipedia says). Honestly, I only know a few other people with PS3's, and even if I wanted to play a game with them, I'd still much rather play it with them sitting on the couch next to me; online just isn't the same. Therefore, the developers lost a valuable sale (that $60 could've made a difference! Really!).

The way online can be so easily ruined. Usually by me having the nerve not to buy a game when it comes out.
I rented Modern Warfare 2 recently and I didn't stand a chance. I don't care if it's better if you get more skill or different weapons.
It wasn't fun, it got boring really fast and I didn't like it.

*Insert witty comment about TF2 having great balance to solve this problem*

I miss the days of huge expansion packs that would greatly improve and alter the game for $15-$20. Now they charge that much for a couple new quests and a shiny new gun.

DLC. If you make something like WoW, then I can see why you need to pay 30 bucks for the expansion, because its a major change to the game, with lots of money and effort behind it. But when I look at the CoD MW2 DLC, five new maps, several of which are just recycled MW1 maps, I feel like they put very little work into something that isn't all the good.

Basically, there's too much paying, not enough playing in most of the biggest hyped new games.

And space marines. Dear God, if I never see a space marine again, unless in SCII, it will be too soon.
