Before the majority of AAA titles were FPS games. Not that I hate them, but I liked the variety of the 90s.

I was just going through my cds/dvds and I found that game Original War. That was very good RTS. Lots of new ideas and interesting plot. Some RPG elemnts. Why they don't make games like this anymore. Or somethig fresh like Halo.

I remember playing old games that, despite not having the scale of newer games, felt really epic. Vikings, Fantasy General, and Fantasy Empires were some of my favorite games growing up. Come to think of it, I don't believe ANY game has had a sound track as epic as the opening music to Fantasy General. I remember playing through Vikings and desperately searching for a village to raid or trade with to restore my food. I remember listening to the man in the bar tell you stories of great artifacts. And while ALL of the quests were either "go conquer that town" or "find some obscure cave", each one felt like an actual triumph.

So do the younger gamers today have the same level of attachment and love for videogames that we do? We seem to be so unimpressed with this generation of gaming, but this is what they are going to getting nostalgic about in forums to come. Are we just old, bitter and picky?

I miss the days when not every game was trying to be a huge blockbuster smash. When a developer could happily make a niche game, and there'd be a fanbase for it.

I miss the feeling of going out and spending my birthday money on my first videogame, Final Fantasy IX. Cost me the princely sum of £25, and was worth every penny. Of course, games cost twice as much as that these days, and don't offer anywhere near as much value for money...
Couldn't agree more. Remember when playing Wings (WWI fly sim) I've shoot down first German airplane. That overwelming sense of achvement. btw I think there are still lots to explore but developers are lazy and whant to make safe money. They are not going to risk make something new. Explore and actualy make something that me and you will enjoy. Wouldn't regret any penny spent on such game. Now before every purchase I do carefull study to avoid spending fortune on new game I wont enjoy.

Good co-op play.

Seriously, we could use some more of it. Especially if you can turn on TKing and turn off TKing penalties.

"Let's fight them!"
"OK"
*gunfight*
"They're all dead. Now what?"
"Let's fight each other!"
"OK!"
*gunfight*

I miss having enough time to spend playing lots of different games. Nowadays it seems I can only stick with the creme of the crop.

2D games. No camera problems, no whining about balance or headshots or whatever. Just pure stupid fun. Local multiplayer almost goes without saying.

Final Boss 'walls', where the boss or level in question tries to be both scary/dark and miles ahead of any other challenge a game has to offer. That's why it's the FINAL boss, twits, not just the guy that you fight at the end because the story demands it of you.

I miss the sense of nostalgia we had in the old days. That was fine, fine nostalgia. They don't make nostalgia like that anymore.

Really? I miss being submerged for the first time into a fantastic game.

When I was younger, a wee lad to say, my brother brought home a copy of "The legend of zelda: Ocarina of time"!

Watching him for plenty of time, going through the kokiri forest, this stuff was amazing!

And then I got to play. Hell, when the game was all full and finished with him, I played. it was absolutely an amazing story, and gameplay was incredible to say the least. Getting to Ghoma was such an epic adventure, and I had no clue to the strategy... Hmm... But those days are gone.

Now, some people can get all the way to dodongo's cavern without looking at the T.V.!

Frankly, all these games get old and repetitive. Yes, I got confused with portal, until I figured out "Oh, I'm all out of new techniques... So I gotta use the same old stuff for the rest of the game..." I'm waiting until they release something that, they say would be better.

In order to make this more like a proper old man style "back in my day" conversation (the type my dad would have when he's drunk, if he didn't hate video games), I'm going to forget that several of these points have already been made and repeat them again. And smoke a pipe. Although you won't be able to see that. I liked it better when I was shit at games. That way it took ages to complete them, and when you finally did, you got a much greater sense of satisfaction. I also liked it better when I couldn't aford them, because it made it much more special when you finally got to play them. Before the internet, and having access to information about any game you want at your fingertips, you bought games based on recomendations from your friends, not because IGN said it was good. And as a result, all the games you bought were awesome, because the chances are, you liked exactly the same things as your friends. Finally, I think online gaming is a poor substitute for actually being in the same room as the people you're playing with. I remember when the whole family (well, me, my brother and my friend from down the road) would gather round the PS2 of an evening and play on James Bond: Agent Under Fire. Making sure your oponents weren't looking at your screen added another challenging dimension to the gameplay. If someone kept shooting you where you spawned, you simply punched them, or ripped their controller out. Now if I want to play multiplayer, it's with some 10 year old who breathes down the mic loudly in-between calling me a fag.

playing a game and thinking well really they could have made so much more out of it and finding something i dont like. as opposed to my old childish sense of being lulled into a game and liking every bit of it (minus hard bits).

concentration on single player. yea most games WERE single player but the oldies with multiplayer (Medal of Honour ...aah flashbacks) was fun in all aspects.
