I miss the unrealistic and colorful graphics. Every game nowadays is trying to make the environments look as realistic as possible.

Multiplayer not being an excuse for horrible single-player.

I miss the days when not every game was trying to be a huge blockbuster smash. When a developer could happily make a niche game, and there'd be a fanbase for it.

I miss the feeling of going out and spending my birthday money on my first videogame, Final Fantasy IX. Cost me the princely sum of £25, and was worth every penny. Of course, games cost twice as much as that these days, and don't offer anywhere near as much value for money...
You got FFIX for £25?! I got it on it's first day for like £40! Played it all weekend, my favourite FF game.

Aside from me and my friend when playing on his wii some old school classics, I miss split screen as well. It always had a more enjoyable feel to it as your with friends and not a bunch of cheaters or annoying mic spammers (I refrain from the under age bias as I play and have played with many kids who dont fit the stereotype). You knew your opponent wasn't cheating and when playing co-op it was much more rewarding. I dont mind online but it can just be retardedly frustrating at times, turning me off from gaming all together. Thank you RPG's for quelling my online rage.

The good ol' health bar, what ever happened to health packs and bars now all you need to do is hide like a baby under a table to regain health.

I guess what I miss is playing games with simple objectives (ie platformers where the mission is to "reach the end of the level") that were a challenge to accomplish. Trouble is that these days I no longer appreciate that kind of simplicity. It's got nearly bollocks to do with the industry, but rather me getting older and craving more complexity/layers in my entertainment in general.

i miss having a FULL game. NO i don't want to buy Live, and the subsequent DSL line needed to run it, "i don't give a flying shit about multiplayer", so i would like to have a good single player game.

wait what?

The new ideas, the creativeness, the childish joy of stomping on turtles, how a bad series could be a fun game (Hey, I liked the original power rangers game, shut the hell up) but most of all, I miss having my parents pay for it all

The best split screen ever, was: Return Fire. Miss that kind of head-to-head gameplay. Back in the days most of the games were something new. Gender Wars, Space Quest, Beeneth the Steel Sky, Day of the Tentacle, Cannon Fodder (does anyone remembery this one?) I miss the time when to read about games you had to buy a games magazine. Nearly every game back the had high score (with some expetions). I miss unique games.

I forgot about sexism online while playing video games. It seems more guys want to bash women then make babys with them online. Uh its completely (yahtzee quote) Pants on head retarded? Cause we don't usually talk to women a lot if we are hardcore gamers so contact with them should be good in practice right? RIGHT?

I enjoyed things like turok evolution... it was pleasing to run up behind a guy and smash his skull with an axe. And i didnt even mind that in the jungle levels if you went to the edge of them they stopped you from leaving with a badly painted cardboard wall.
Or bursting into a room with full cheat power (it improves the game instead of diminishing it lol) and using a big machine gun non-stop.

The only thing i didnt like about it was the last boss took ages to kill normally OR you just lure him into the trees and knock TWO of them down on him and you win...

I miss the time when most games allowed a second player to help with the game. Games like Double Dragon, Kirby, Perfect Dark 64, Contra, and ESPECIALLY Bubble Bobble. I grew up playing games like these with my brother, and through teamwork and cooperation we could plow through these hard games. Then we would play them through again and try to sabotage the other person's score and/or try to get them killed. Games don't have that any more, the only recent game I can think of with this function is Army of Two, and the two player function wasn't anything special.

I also missed the games that were just games. The ones with little or no back story. Where you go around beating people up just because you can. The original Double Dragon is a perfect example. "Some guys kidnapped your girlfriend, go beat them up". Now, every game that could fit into this category has a last minute prologue and weak storytelling segments that are supposed to give you a reason to keep playing but end up doing nothing but bore you and motivate you to look for a skip scene button. There won't be one, so now you have to watch as archetypal NPC #4 exclaims "we will destroy you in the name of justice!"

Games like DMC4, if you skip every cutscene in the game, would be a good example if this didn't make the game 4 hours long.

I've tried xbox live at a friend's house. NEVER AGAIN. I'm not buying that system. NO!
I'm playing Xbox Live myself and somethimes there is massive lag but gameplay is on decent level. Only pain is that you have to pay for Xbox Live access but quality of service is poor.

@SteinFaust: About social gaming. Heros of Might and Magic. Playing HOT-SEAT with my brother and frinends.
I can't tell you how much I miss HOT-SEAT with freinds I would bring over Heroes of Might and Magic to my friends house and we would have sleep-overs and stay till five playing (Not just that game Golden eye tournements and helping each other beat OoT I was the first one to beat it BTW) Ah the good days of gaming.

I always try to play my old consoles to recreate the "Glory Days" of gaming but it never feels like it was back then.

Original Ideas, Where the hell did you go? Did the pyramid head and EA get done with you and threw you in a bin somewhere?

I also miss long games that would take you weeks now games take you 15 hours on average, I also miss really immersion games that when you where playing you would lose track of the time and before you knew it you had to go to sleep.I also miss the sense of accomplishment like andromeda23 said when you would finally beat that level you had been stuck on for ages and when you finally finish you really felt like you achieved something.

GOOD FPS that werent about Zombies or the Supernatural, The only good one i've played recently is Tribes: Vengeance, it has a good storyline full of plot twists that will keep you guessing who the REAL villain is until the end. One of the levels was EXTREMELY hard and I ended up skipping it with a code. STOP do not reply to thread "No level is impossible!!!1111one" I can see be posted here after I post this, you have to defend 4 satellite dishes while the enemy throws Assault ships, tanks and douchebags in Heavy Armour shooting you with mortars while the tanks run around and weaken each satellite so the Assault Ship can finish one off and suddenly its "How could you let them destroy it, we'll never get the information we need now!". But it was good that when you play the assasin you dont HAVE to be stealthy.

I liked political games, syphon filter falls into this, sort of. But games with a heavy political storyline in it, so you shooting up the bad guys won't just save the day, but they could plan that, to make your goverment or department look bad. You know stuff like that, so it isn't black and white in whos good or bad, or it is but the enemy use more than just gunpower to fight.
