I have to say, I have played all the halo games, and I admit, they're good, controls are nice, the game smooth and polished, and I had fun playing it. That said, I thought it was good, not great like everyone else. The game play is monotonous, the atmosphere is uninteresting, The graphics are..... Well lets put it this way: If I hold up a lump of shit, its not pretty, now if I made a 3D model of that shit, no matter how good I make it, its still ugly. I mean, the graphics are good, but still ugly and boring. The story line, or lack there of, is what really put me off this game though. If you've read my past posts, you'll know I like story.... a lot...... Metal gear solid.......

So what am I missing in this? Some hidden gem I'm not seeing?

No, if you don't like it then you don't like it, there's nothing more to it. I find it fun to play with friends (even though I am pretty much always last place because I don't own and practice it), but when I tried out the single-player mode I thought, "Wow... totally uninteresting..."

A completely AVERAGE game. It's fun, but I don't understand why reviewers are giving the games perfect scores (100/100, 100%, 5/5 etc.).

Halo has a very good story it's just not absorbed completely into it like it is in MGS4. If you want story in Halo read the Halo book series.

EDIT: Please don't flame me for the MGS4 comment.

I see a really fun to play FPS, especially if you are playing co-op online, and I would probably buy it there was a PS3 version.

In my eyes, there are three reasons HALO earned so much praise:
1.) Good control scheme
2.) Smooth gameplay
3.) Multiplayer

Bungie nailed it by creating a competent shooter. Compared to most of the FPS scene in this day and age (and yes, even since the first HALO), HALO is a competent franchise in terms of gameplay. This would appeal to the masses who enjoyed the likes of DOOM (1 and 2), who were all about saying 'to hell with the story' and just blowing things away. I'm sure we can all agree that despite the 'amazing graphics' of its time, DOOM wasn't exactly pretty for its aesthetic appeal.

As for the multiplayer, it's essentially the same deal - mindlessly running around killing things in the most competently-stable game on the market. While the campaign levels were decently (not amazingly) designed in the first game, through HALO 2 and 3 it seemed the devs were just running out of ways to make mindless AI vs. Player shootouts interesting, so their efforts become focused on multi-player action.

And mind you, I was once a big-time HALO fan, out there at 12:01am for the HALO 3 launch and all, followed immediately by a 36-hour online co-op fest with friends. Now, however, the entire HALO series (short of HALO Wars or whatever) sits on my shelf gathering dust, much of how DOOM sits unplayed and unloved on my thumb drive.

Most people play it for the same reason I do, multiplayer. Its fun to hit up social matches with freinds and just screw around. Example: my freinds and I decided last night to only use magnums one match and see how far we could get, we lost by about 15 kills, but we had fun.

Oh my crap. I can't believe this game is discussed this much even after it has been out for so long now. Some people worship it, others hate it, and a few normal, sane people just think it's fun. It's old news now, what could there possibly be left to discuss?

It's that the Halo series has sufficient space within it (in gameplay and story) to accomodate a large variety of fans. There's plenty of background to explore (as the Ascendant Justice [http://blog.ascendantjustice.com/] guys can attest), the environments are intimately explorable (see High Impact Halo [http://www.highimpacthalo.org/]), and the playstyles even online in the official matchmaking service are varied enough to draw different folks.

That, and the polish is amazing on the series.

Halo was the first decent multiplayer fps, so thats why i like Halo 1. Not a big fan of 2/3 tho.
