Its because, generally speaking, furries like to make a big deal of being furries. If a furry is in the room with you, he will mention he is one at least twice.
And since imagining someone masturbating to furry porn makes me sick, im not so keen.
Also, its worth mentioning I consider the normal-person-to-dangerously-insane ratio in furries much higher than in other groups. You get people who seriously think they were born as a human but have the soul of a wolf. Sorry furries, but that is fucking crazy in my book. Crazy enough to make the whole thing a little scary.
This is all just in my (admittedly limited) experience though. Maybe im just unlucky.
To be honest, thinking about anyone else masturbating makes me feel a little ill! But seriously, you make some valid points.
I think the normal:insane ratio within the furry fandom is all down to exposure. The more outspoken furries are more likely to make a scene whereas you probably won't even notice the more reserved members. But you are right, based on what you can easily find on the internet, it certainly does seem like there's a whole lot of nutcases. I can't speak for those who believe they are an animal in a human's body but I think they go beyond what we typically assocciate with the furry fandom.

Fuck my whole post just got eaten alive. TL;DR version - most of the furries I have seen at cons (D*Con anyway, don't think many furries dress up for Comic Con) are not afraid to display their in-character affection for each other. The sexual aspect is what creeps me out and its what I have been more knowingly exposed to.
Furries are typically very open people, which is certainly no excuse but I guess they don't consider how other people might view that. I can't say I would find it socially acceptable to be so intimate in public, furry or not, there's just some things you don't do, it's only polite.
But it's worth noting that there's a hell of a lot of variation amongst fandom members. Some furries, like myself, are happy to appreciate the artwork and maybe contribute on some level, creating our own art or being involved in discussions/roleplay. Roleplay, I hasten to add, doesn't necessarily mean the sexual kind! Others might involve themselves a little more actively.
I'm not trying to make our fandom sound appealing or recruit new members but when you get down to it, the furry fandom is a very positive and social one. Just like real life involving actual bonafide humans, everyone has different and preferred levels of social involvement. Some furries therefore, might take their social involvement to a higher level. These people are not ashamed and for that I hold some admiration, but there are limits and as much as we should be proud of who we are... well, no one likes having anything shoved in their faces, whatever the theme.
