I love WH40K. It's universe is so bleak and unforgiving and full of manly powerarmors... The Dawn of War series was a must-buy for me! Space Marine got my hopes up for a gritty, bloody and violent third-person-shooter, without chesthighwalls, such as in Gears of War, but after trying out the demo in Steam, the game felt quite dull. The guns lacked punch, melee was, though gritty, like punching paperdolls with red paint on them.
I'm very glad THQ was brave enough to put a demo out: that is a sign of confidence in your product and all the better for the consumer, but sadly it didin't sell me the game.
What do you guys think?

I played the demo and loved it to bits. Will be getting it when it's released in EU this Friday.

Though I must say, it's "promotional tool", the downloadable "Kill Team", was a damn riot! I ended up liking it even more than its parent game, even if I've yet only played the demo.

The demo was better than I expected. I loved Dawn of War, but didn't really like Fire Warrior all that much so I was a on the fence about this one. That said, I'm not buying it on release, I'd rather wait and see how it does and grab it for less later on.

However much I want to avoid comparing this game to Gears of War, I just want to make this comparison.

"Space Marine is like Gears of War, but with more Testosterone, more eviscerating weird alien creatures into small chunks of meat with various forms of chainsaws, more blowing weird alien creatures into small chunks of meat with various forms of explosives, more stomping on the heads of weird alien creatures until it only resembles small chunks of meat, and yet more turning weird alien creatures into small chunks of meat.... sometimes with bare fists. So it's like Gears of War, just a little bit better.... a gorier."

Sorry Gears of War, but the Space Marines curb-stomp your comparison into the dust underneath their enormous boots!

The demo seems to have disappeared from Steam, so I haven't been able to play it.

i agree the bolters are still too blergh. and the melee got kinda repetetive.
but its made by THQ, so i smell modability like a baws

Demo was pretty fun though it seemed like it could get really repetitive. I think I'll wait a bit before purchasing to see if the consensus is that it's worth $60.

I kinda want to hate it, but at the end of the day it's not bad.

It's silly, a bit too simple and takes itself waaaay too seriously. But, at least as I understand it, all the things I don't like about it are part of the setting. So hey, if they want to make a game for fans of WH40K, good on them. Who am I to come and piss on their parade?

Although, having seen WH40K fans in action, I suspect half of them will be screaming that the orcs aren't green enough or that the giant guns aren't phallic enough.

How come there isn´t any reviews out on this yet?

Edit: oh, Eurogamer has one up now. 6/10... surprising, I think.
Still it seems to be mainly the repetition that bugs them, so I´m still in ;-)

The full version had problems - particularly the checkpointing was very poor and the voice-over was laborious and unskippable - making you work through hard sections and re-expriencing the voice over over and over again. Particularly frustrating when you fall through holes in the floor. Perhaps exacerbated by this, it gets very samey after a very short while.

Might just have been my excitement for the game but I personally thought the Space Marine demo was pretty damn good (I tried the Xbox 360 version so maybe mine was different to yours?).

I didn't have any problem with the guns lacking punch (all of them were actually more destructive and effective than I expected them to be) and I admitantly liked the fact that you could carve through hordes of Orks with ease (much maniacical laughter was had once I got my hands on a Power Axe), like the Dawn of War series, this all combined to make a game that actually made you feel like you're really in the Warhammer 40k universe (which it must be admited is a pretty damn cool and badass universe to be in).

As a Warhammer 40k fan I personally had no gripes with the demo at all (and is one of the few cases where I've played a demo through quite a few times over and over).

Oh look it's this thread again!

I'll stick with the extra short version this time: Game fun, action awesome, grenade launcher sucked/is broken.

You went in wanting to hate it? That...often isn't a good sign.

It's silly, a bit too simple and takes itself waaaay too seriously. But, at least as I understand it, all the things I don't like about it are part of the setting. So hey, if they want to make a game for fans of WH40K, good on them. Who am I to come and piss on their parade?
To be fair, the whole silliness and over the top nature of Warhammer 40k is sort of what makes the setting so damn great in my opinion. It isn't just the darkness of the future, it's the grim fucking darkness of the future (yes, the added 'fucking' for emphasis was nessercary).

But at least you acknowledge that just because it isn't your sort of thing doesn't inherantly make it bad (I'm not a huge fan of games like Final Fantasy but I can still acknowledge why people like them and what makes them good games).

Although, having seen WH40K fans in action, I suspect half of them will be screaming that the orcs aren't green enough or that the giant guns aren't phallic enough.
I'm a 40k fan, and I'd say they made the Orks pretty damn green and the weapons fairly phallic, although thank you for pointing that out.

I now have more to make jokes about when it comes to playing it with friends in the future thanks to that, much laughter and joy shall be had and I thank you.

From the UK? For some reason the demo isnt (or at least, wasnt) appearing for people here, if you google the problem you should be able to find a steam link which takes you directly to the download.

Have to agree, Kill Team is great fun. If it had online probably be my Arcade game of the year.
