Here's a game: Tears of Reality. It's an RPG Maker game, so hype doesn't happen. And not many people who know about RPG Maker played it, even on the forum. I couldn't tell you a more underrated game.

It turned out to be one of the best games ever made.
Whoa, slow your roll there, chum. That's a pretty big statement with little evidence.

On topic: EarthBound (Mind you I mean for its original release in America.)

None of you people got the thread. (Not even the OP) Now, I'm not trying to flame anyone, but this needs to be said.

"underrated, no-hype"

let's review.

Oddworld: Critically acclaimed
ArmA & 2: Hyped and acclaimed
Psychonauts: Every living gamer knows about this game and it's virtues.
Left4Dead: If you think this game went unhyped (or was underrated) then please get your head out of the ground.

I would have to say Syberia. See? Never hyped, reviews were around 80, but should have been more like 100/100.
Amen, man. Syberia is definitely the game that first came to mind for me. Such an amazing game, with an amazing sequel. The artwork sells it all by itself, and it has a compelling story on top of that. A shame no one has ever heard of it.

Sins of a Solar Empire and Demigod are two others that received minimal hype, though the former ended up being extremely acclaimed critically. Both are pretty incredible games, if you enjoy RTS-styled games.

SiN: Episode One: Emergence was pretty awesome, too, but got pretty much nothing, critically or hype-wise.

Hmmm,Persona2 was really good, they seemed to have missed the point of what made it great when it went to Persona3....

I like Silent Hill4 but it wasn't as advertised as the other ones it seems.

Tales of Destiny was just epic.

Wow, everyone has said Psychonauts or Beyond Good and Evil. I think that would be hyped, whether it was official hype before release or fan hype afterwards makes no difference. Everyone on the Escapist has these games' nuts in their mouths or something. I like them too, but I don't think they're as underappreciated as we all think.
Yeah, with everyone appreciating them, doesn't that make them appreciated, right?^^ They're most definitely not "underrated" games, since most people think they're good. And just as a thought, an underrated game doesn't have to be an unpopular game, right? Just that people didn't like it.

Which pretty much destroys my own first thought. Vampire the masquerade! I don't know if it was hyped much, but I doubt it was since it isn't very famous. It did however get positive reviews, as did Arcanum (Which I didn't like as much). So I guess it really isn't underrated, since it was rated pretty good. It is however not very well known, thus maybe making underrated in the sense that not a lot of people seem to have played it.

How about Mother 3? Nobody near me has heard of it or Earthbound, definitely no hype outside of Japan, many reviews don't give it the credit it deserves.

Armoured Core 4 unless I blinked and missed the hype which may have been quite possible and maybe Ninja Gaiden 2 but then again could be same story.

Freespace 2.

I loved the game so much, that i couldn't put it down for 3 years, but then the multiplayer community died, and it all went down the drain.

But if they released Freespace 3 I would buy it and cherish it till my eyes fall out.

agreed, but online was a nightmare
Never tried online....I always think that games that don't show off multiplayer aren't impressed by the effort put into it....thus I steered clear of it

Freespace. I like big (huge) ships 600 times bigger than mine fighting on the same level, and me dodging.
Woah, I just searched up a video for that to find out what the game was like, and just then realized I have this game.

It was freaking awesome. I need to find the disc.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic!

This game was simply.... wonderful. I almost cried when I beat it.
I loved the demo for the PC, but after renting it for console, it was meh. I mean I had tons of fun backstabbing everyone, but going through temples constantly fighting undead was annoying. The orcs and humans were funner. :D

For some reason I stopped playing it on the last level, and the rental ran out. :[
Maybe the PC version is better in some way?

At the time of release, maybe these games hadn't gotten much press and would qualify as underrated or no-hype, but since they've gained a lot of notoriety via word of mouth I would not longer consider them underrated/no-hyped.
