Replaying it. It's been on my shelf for a year. I got it for the Xbox for, like, 5 bucks used. I wanted to see what the community thought of it - underrated, overrated, didn't sell enough? I, personally think that it's one of the better games of the generation if only because of it's attitude, but that's just me.

Also, it saddens me that I've never seen it mentioned on here.

Was ok when it was a mediocre hack-and-slash brawler with a fun aesthetic.

Rapidly went downhill when it turned into a RTS with lousy controls in which you essentially play a sentient mouse pointer that can hit people in between telling your troops what to do.

The setting and stuff was... okay, I guess. Colourful and imaginative and whatnot. I got the impression it was trying to be funny, but I don't remember laughing. Not really my thing I suppose. Personally I like my games to be more serious in tone, or at least to be actually funny, but that's more a matter of preference than quality.

I quite liked it and thought it was fun and held together well I wasnt keen on the open world bit as like almost all open worlds it just felt empty and lifeless a pointless place to be except to get to the next mission.

Didnt care for multiplayer though. I am not a fan of RTS but I found this one easy enough to not cause any headaches actually I dont think I ever lost a battle so it must have been easy.

Eh.
The gameplay worked if you put it on easy and played it like it feels like it should be played, but the RTS stuff was pretty shitty and boring. The setting and writing were fairly solid, and made for some good fun to just drive around in, but it's no Psychonauts.

It was a great two hour Tim Schafer adventure, after that it reverts back to it's uninspired and confused original form which was a very poor take on console RTS.

Wasted potential, to me.

I really like the idea of it, and the setting, and I like Jack Black, but the actual gameplay sucks a fat one. The hack-and-slash sections showed promise, but never really evolved to a satisfying point, and the RTS sections suck. Which is a shame, considering how much of the actual game is RTS.

And perhaps I'm biased, but that demo was REALLY misleading as to how the actual game was going to go. All the best humor is there, and it's nothing but the hack-and-slash sections. I had no idea that the RTS part was going to be so damn prominent.

So... yeah, not a fan.

I really enjoyed it. I must be the only one who thought that the stage battles were pretty cool, and was pleasantly surprised when I fought one.

I enjoyed it for the most part. I wasn't exactly a big fan of the RTS bits, but I had a good bit of fun otherwise.

As for why you've never seen it mentioned, for some reason all Double Fine games aside from Phyconauts are rarely ever talked about on this site. For example, I love the game Iron Brigade, but I'm the only one who ever seems to even mention it here.

I enjoy it. The RTS segments remind me of Sacrifice. The "Commander on the field" RTS is an underdeveloped genre so it's a good thing this game exists at all. Too bad the advertising tried to sell it as a simple slasher. It's obvious that many players were confused when they found themselves playing an RTS.

I love it. The world is great, soundtrack is awesome, love the characters and I don't even mind the RTS sections. My only gripe is that the story was kinda rushed towards the end.

I could have done without the RTS elements. Just let me slice and slash demons with a guitar axe and I'm good.

I think it's one of the last better things that Jack Black was in for awhile, and I really like the characters. The world was a neat setting too. I think it many ways it was underrated, but I can understand the gripes people had about it. I'm not a big fan of RTS games to begin with, and even I felt that the RTS gameplay was underdeveloped, however being able to continue on foot and hack and slash your way while controlling the battle was nice.

Soundtrack was awesome, but what else can you expect from a collection of the best heavy metal bands?

Fun game, worth the time to play it through once. It was probably over-ambitious...combining so many different things (open world, driving, RTS, RPG, etc.), it was probably a miracle that it was as fun as it turned out to be. Still, it falls just a bit short of expectations overall. And definitely don't bother with the multiplayer...it's by far the worst part of the game.

I imagine the PC port recently released on Steam would be more functional (after all, the biggest complaint being the RTS parts play right into the keyboard/mouse wheelhouse), but I haven't had time to try it out yet.

i love the soundtrack and the voice acting from these Metal Legends, other than that it was ok. I love Ozzy as the Guardian of Metal. "You have interrupted the Guardian of Metal's nap."

Guardian: "Please the fucking Gods of Metal, man! Figure it out!"
Eddie: "Right, Okay, I'll be back soon, covered in Metal God love."
Guardian: "Oh God..."

Love that game

It was.... ok, I guess.
The best bit about it was the soundtrack, the voice acting and Tim Schafer's sense of humour. Hell, this is the game that made me a metal head.
The rest was a mixed bag. The hack-and-slash was all right, though the face melter solo reduced it to waiting for the cooldown to subside, though I didn't mind because it was awesome to kill people with a rocking solo.
The RTS sections ranged from mediocre to arduous because there's no strategy aside from make a billion units and tell them to stomp on whatever looks at you funny.
The story is ok, but rushed towards the end.
The open world is decent, with enough collectables and pieces of lore to keep you interested in exploring the world, and it provides your badass customizable car to go about your exploration.
I still remember it fondly though, so interpret that as you will.

I loved that game, really fun without being stupid. I found the RTS fine, the world interesting (and actually a decent sized sandbox for freakin once!) and the achievements especially kinda awesome. It's just a shame you need to play online for half of them, and no-one ever is.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Love it, still annoyed at reviewers for convincing me not to get it when it came out. The rts sections work as well as is possible for an rts to work on a console and everything about them is so damn creative.
