Poetry is a lot like anime, a lot of people will dismiss it on the surface, but will end up discovering that among it, there's something for them, I can't write (decent) poetry myself, so people who can do so earn my respect in that matter, and although I hate more recent, especially politically slanted poems, I find that I love classic, particularly Victorian poetry.

I'll just leave one here.

Half a league, half a league,
  Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns' he said:
Into the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldiers knew
  Some one had blunder'd:
Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
  Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
  Rode the six hundred.

Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
  All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre-stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
  Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
  Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
  All the world wonder'd.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
  Noble six hundred!
You've pretty much hit the nail on the head in terms of the type of poetry that I dispise: Excess use of metaphor and being heavily overwritten. While I do understand that it's trying to paint a picture of heros and armies in combat or whatever, I do find this stuff painful to read.

And about the dismissing something they haven't had much exposure to thing, there are lot's of thing that I have hated at first but grown to love, or at least like. Jazz, electronica and cop shows all fall under that for me, so it's not for lacking an open mind when it comes to new things. With poetry I haven't found anything I've really liked yet, dispite being exposed to a lot of it thoughout school. (This may be seen as an excuse for people to fling their faveourite passages at me, don't, I created this thread to see how people regard poetry, not to get "problem" fixed)

I don't really like poetry that much but it's definitely art.

I'm a Poe fan.
Poe and Robert Frost are some of the few poetry I like.

I was pissed in school once. I took a "creative writing" course only to find out it was just a poetry course so I dropped it. Not saying poetry isn't creative but if all you're doing in the class is poetry that's a poetry class not a creative writing class. I'm not English major so I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the term "creative writing" refers to short stories, novellas, etc. stuff like that. If we were just doing some poetry I could understand, but it was exclusively poetry.

Well I attempt to write poetry (with a Poe influence if any one cares) so I'm sort of biased but heres my answers anyways.

1) I like good poetry
2) yes, its an art just as much as song writing or anything else that takes time and thought to write
3) sort of a given seeing as I write it
4) While I do consider some rap a form of poetry, however, most of it I see as just music (and not good music at that)

Not really my cup of tea I'm afraid. I'm sure it takes talent to write good poetry but it's completely wasted on me.

I read poetry, as far as rap and hip/hop go I think it should be said that any genre of music that uses vocals is poetry, though every song I've heard of ever, and I mean ever going back to The Beetles, would be classified as a shitty repetitive poem if striped of the aspects of said piece. Hip/hop and Rap itself would probably be the bridge between the two. I'm currently doing a Poetry piece by a rap artist in Speech and Debate and for the most part, it gets really good reviews.

But then you get these RAP AIN'T MUSIC folks who bring lyrics from a Yellowcard song and expect to get first. I specified Yellowcard because this one kid brought in lyrics from the song Paper Walls. He started bashing what I was presenting because it had a Urban feel and there by I was talking about bitches and hoes. I laughed in his face after I served him up.

I like some poetry. Ulysses, The Green Hills of Earth, O Captain!, bla bla bla. It's not a huge hobby of mine, but I can enjoy a nice poem when I read one.

I like poetry; it's a good way to express yourself... and a good way to pass time in class when you don't have anything else to do.

"Condensation"

Drawn to the storm she
presses to the window.

Reflection obscured,
a fog of sweet coffee sweat.

A symmetry of winds
cool, damp traces.

I don't like french poetry. As a french speaker, i feel no connection to poets! they speak a different language that i do! What is beautiful in creating words out of nowhere and writing in a complex pattern! I feel most of the french poems are a bunch of nonsense fused together, and the prank is to pretend they the nonsense have a huge meaning.

On the other hand, English poetry is beautiful. Shakespeare, edgar allan poe, etc. It's rythmed and good.

I like good poetry with deep hidden meanings, or that which tell a story. Want a lot of poems written into song? Read Tolkien, particularly, The Hobbit. That man really liked his songs. I always have thought that stories that incorporated poems or songs into their writings added a lot of spice to the narrative; unless of course, the poems or songs were poorly written, but usually there was a lot of effort put into them, and they were a joy to read.

I wouldn't completely disregard poetry. Many ancient texts are in the form of prose. Try reading the Bible, specifically, Habakkuk, Psalms, and Song of Solomon.

Poetry is definitely an art; an art at which I fail spectacularly.

I will not give my opinion on rap/hip-hop, because the only basis for it is that I thoroughly don't enjoy it. It hurts my ears.

I like poetry quite a lot, but not all of it. A lot of modern poetry, the kind of stuff my friends write - it's utter shit. You don't sit down at the page and pour out words, then expect it to be good. If you do that, you've written a crap poem. I feel strongly about this. Creative writing is about emotion, yes. But to get to that emotion requires a lot of hard work and discipline.

So, the crap you find in magazines - that's out for me. But a lot of classic poetry is great. I enjoy some Poe here and there, though he isn't my favorite writer ever. And, of course, a lot of poetry set to music (song lyrics) are my favorite kinds. I'm very auditory. Songs help me get into the words, more than reading them on a page. Gorillaz does this well for me.

Poetry is the essence of song lyrics. I like song lyrics. Especially if they're by Heywood Banks or Spike Jones or Weird Al or Commander Cody.

But "artsy" poetry---well, to be blunt, I think it sucks and it bores me to sleep to go to a poetry reading.
