I don't like french poetry. As a french speaker, i feel no connection to poets! they speak a different language that i do! What is beautiful in creating words out of nowhere and writing in a complex pattern! I feel most of the french poems are a bunch of nonsense fused together, and the prank is to pretend they the nonsense have a huge meaning.

On the other hand, English poetry is beautiful. Shakespeare, edgar allan poe, etc. It's rythmed and good.
Oh, but one of my favorite poems is French!

Un petit d'un petit
S'étonne aux Halles
Un petit d'un petit
Ah! degrés te fallent
Indolent qui ne sort cesse
Indolent qui ne se mène
Qu'importe un petit d'un petit
Tout Gai de Reguennes.

I know, it makes very little sense in French. But to English ears! A classic!(Click here for background info, or if you don't have patience for my nonsense:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mots_d'Heures)

I'm somewhat logical in my methods, emotional appeals don't really work on me, and so poems which rely heavily on emotion are ineffective.

I've a like for poetry when /
It is genuinely clever /
But disdain for it when /
It's only pretending.

An ironic poem in that it's an example of a poem that only pretends to be clever, forming a bit of a catch22 in that perhaps it's clever after all. This poem would pass by the conventions of most modern art, which is about acceptance more than anything else. However, I just made it off-the-cuff, and it's hard to take something wrought so easily all that seriously.

I find it confusing, particularly when considering my reaction to it.

Whenever I hear it spoken I'm programmed to be immediately drawn into the subtle beauty of it...but if I ever read it or, god forbid, have to write any, my old school-based hatred of it returns, so i'm honestly not sure where i stand anymore.
