They did the right thing. It shows a bit of backbone in that they'll suspend someone even though they win tonnes of medals for them. It shows that all of them are on the same playing field, same rules. Good for them.

i have to laugh at Phelps. Nobody is going to take him seriously anymore after this.
Yeah i won X amount of medals and i'm doper... nice touch.
He could have milked his medals for years, now advertisers arent going to want to touch him due to the image.
Maybe Bamboo will jump on an endorsement.

This just shows that "Big Brother" is watching and wants all you little rat-finks to snitch on everyone and take pictures with their cellphones of anyone doing anything illegal at anytime and report it to the Gestapo for proper execution. Seriously, who are anyone of you to judge someone for what they do? Let's see you go out and win even one Olympic medal. Or maybe you'd rather sit behind a monitor an ***** about how someone else should live their life because yours is so empty. Hell, if I won 8 gold medals, I'd be celebrating with truck loads of liquor and cocaine.

In a society, yes laws would state what is right and wrong. In terms of everyone for themselves than no, right and wrong would just be subjective.
Laws can be written and formed for unjust reasons and through unjust decisions. Prohibition is a perfect example and is not any different from the nonsense viewpoints the US legal system and citizenry have against marijuana.

Hell, it used to be illegal for whites and blacks to get married and that was obviously a pretty stupid law. The only purpose a law like that serves is preventing people from making a personal choice that has no negative effect or infringement on the rights or being of anybody else. Just like laws that call me a criminal for smoking pot and just like the laws that we temporarily had deeming anyone who owned or drank alcohol a criminal. It's the same principle.

It is bullshit. Pot is less harmful than beer yet Phelps can drink all he wants too. He should not smoke though as it messes with the lungs. That guy needs all the lung capacity he can get.

Pretty pointless to suspend him really for only three months. That length of time isn't going to affect him in any significant way. He'll still be ready for the 2012 games and will still dominate.

Yeah his major sponsors already put out press releases supporting Phelps.

The number of people on the first page that seemed to equate laws to morals makes me sad. Marijuana is such a non-drug that I've had co-workers come to work high and I was completely oblivious to this fact. I don't smoke, but seeing first-hand the "dangers" of marijuana, I'm kinda offended that Phelps is getting the treatment he is. I should be hearing a lot more "8 medals while on pot?! Just think how many he could have if he wasn't on it!"

At least everyone else has a chance now, although I have a feeling he'll be back in the team before the next Olympics.

He did do something illegal, yes, but to be honest, who hasn't?

We ALL know, or should know, that millions of people do it everyday, around the world and in the US. Phelps being a world-class athlete shouldn't give him immunity, but it does attract the attention in order to get him in trouble for doing it. He being famous is the reason he got suspended, smoking pot was just the catalyst.

He may be a role model to swimmers across the globe, but smoking pot shouldn't kill the inspiration. It has NOTHING to do with his swimming capability.
I haven't done anything illegal, not that it is hard not too. I don't know if I would view a "doper" as much of a role model after finding it out.
It's a big statement saying you haven't done something against the rules even once in your lifetime. You would call Phelps a doper because he did it once that you know about? People experiment all the time, I have, but I don't do it on a regular basis.
"People eat babies all the time, I have, but I don't on a regular basis."

You see the problem with "everyone does it, so it's ok" as an argument? Or how about this?

"Everyone owns black slaves, I have, but I don't whip them on a regular basis."

Now, to be sure, I'm presenting some over-the-top situations (though one historically-accurate one) but I'm certain you get the idea.

The man broke the law, and was caught doing so. He should be punished.

I do agree that him smoking pot was stupid, but this begs a question. Who took the picture and for how much money, because it would have most likely been someone he at least knew or trusted.

So my question to you is, Is betraying a friend worth anything?

(also if he was smoking a cigarette or drinking a beer no one would give a shit)
