So on an EDM forum, I stumbled upon this individual (I'm not revealing the identity) having these things to say about video games:

See, what ever momentum you think you have, it is somehow undermined by the fact you are making them in a thread regarding video games. No self respecting adult plays them. Why would you waste time on such dribble. There are so many more things out there that are more interesting. What ever. Live and let live. I just find it sad that people seem to loose themselves in such non rewarding rubbish.

Go to a museum, see a play or band. Go out and meet people and do things that are so much more rewarding than whatever the fuck it is you do. And i've seen the kind that play. I've walked past testing rooms more than once and the people in there seem to just stop learning. They are all sad rat like freaks that waste their time on nonsense.

It is just embarrassing. And the fact people seem to not feel any shame ... I guess some people watch reality tv trash, others numb their brain in other ways. I guess it is none of my business.

Name one game that comes close to chess. Apples and oranges. Board games are fine. Playing a first person shooter by yourself in your room is pathetic. And since this is Steam, which ironically i am aware of as i've done work for EA so I am quite familiar with the concept, the latest trends and how and were things are going. Would never waste my fucking time playing one. I've seen the testing rooms.Every single person is a socially inept chronic masturbator. Lab rats.

I know more about video games that you could imagine. Does not change the fact that of all the things the world offers, video games are a waste of time. I could ignore someone that plays something one hour a week but i have a feeling you fucks play all week recovering from your rave pills.
I also consider poker low brow entertainment. Look. We are not going to see eye to eye. You guys like shit designed for mediocre minds that find fascination in mind numbing activities that do not allow for real human interaction as a normal board would and in my view a stream of white noise to keep the fragile mind occupied. I can't fault you for that.

You are completely right. I just don't get it. I think it is pathetic like i think people that buy the avengers dvd is pathetic. I don't know what sort of operating system you have running and i suppose i should be thankful the world is full of idiot gaming addicts as they definitely make the rest of us look rather good. I guess i pity the person that sits in front of a computer playing pretend when you could be doing real things, seeing real things and meeting real people. Perhaps there is more to it. Maybe just a symptom of being really fucking ugly and awkward and lacking friends that have a heartbeat

I don't want to slander this person, or attach him/her to the pillory. I just want to know what you think of this kind of attitude towards video games. I personally believe this is where the hostility towards video games, especially single player games, is coming from.

Now, I'm not normally one to go for the 'You said X, therefore everything you say about anything is invalid.' It's just dismissive, not to mention a cheap shot.

However, I really can't take anything this guy says seriously when his fist comment is about how he's "too busy crushing vag" while arguing on an internet forum. So yeah, I don't think his attitude is even worth discussing. You don't have to be a hobbyist to have heard of Steam or EA these days, so I highly doubt he's even telling the truth in that regard. Even so, the vast majority of people play some form of videogame, so his opinion is not exactly representative.

People who look down on gamers find much more useless ways to spend their time. While even a single-player game occupies and exercises hand-eye coordination, vegetating in front of a TV is just having information crammed into one's brain without a second thought.

So, basically, he thinks that once you hit a certain age you're 'pathetic' for enjoying things that you might also have enjoyed as a kid.

I dunno, it just blows my mind that someone can be so worried about giving the impression that they're a 'self respecting' adult that they're going to actively slate off people who are free and easy enough to still actually enjoy ALL fun things, not just the ones that make them look good.

Oh, and not understanding that there's nothing wrong with being introverted. Because people who enjoy going out and being around people often can't seem to get their heads around the idea that many people actually ENJOY spending time by themselves at home most of the time.

All in all, why worry about them? You get to enjoy games, they're too busy worrying about their image to do so, that's a win for you by default, I reckon.

I personally really like A or C though, B may be a possibility considering most people younger than 30 likely know someone who is an avid gamer. This really does feel like an attitude that died off long ago.

1. He's a long time member in that forum
2. Many of his other posts, about other subjects, actually contain arguments I can agree with.

No, this attitude is sadly widespread. This person in particular, is probably just to worried about his image, as lisadagz stated.All I'm asking is, how do we defeat this kind of attitude?

That's a different attitude, surely? Bullies who go 'hey you suck I'm better than you', yeah, ignore them. They live to get a rise out of you.

Bullies who go 'I'm gonna make your life hell because I can' (and maybe hide behind excuses to 'justify' it), those are the ones to worry about. For politicians etc. the concern seems to be that video games make us violent or antisocial, not that we're asocial or not... uh... crushing enough vag.

I don't know about you, but it puts a rather sickening image in my head. I think that phrase, more than anything else says what kind of person he is.

That is completely and utterly irrelevant.

I was a mod and then an admin on a Minecraft server for around a year. Somebody who joined the server around the same time as me was the servers largest troll, and he also said some of the most intellectual things as well. Hell, he was one of the only people who you could have a real conversation with half the time.

There are also countless examples of long standing members on here who troll/trolled a lot, but are also (when not trolling) perfectly decent members of the forum with a lot of interesting views.
