A couple of days ago, I had a conversation with my friend about Skyrim(I know, its been over talked, but bear with me). I bought the game legally during launch day, and have recommended it to all of my friends ever since. However, this friend said he was going to pirate Skyrim(moderators, please read the spoiler). He had more than enough money to purchase it, and had the means to as well. I tried to talk him out of it, spouting the usual arguments(the developers deserve the money, this game was expensive to make,etc.). Then he said one thing that really disgusted me."You're just jealous because you had to pay for Skyrim while I get it for free." Just... really? I might be overreacting, but who would think like that? Who would think paying the developers who gave me this experience makes me jealous of illegally pirating a game? At that point I just stopped the conversation. So Escapists, what do you think of this? Am I just really sensitive and overreacting or am I right to get upset over this?

I'm not encouraging or promoting piracy. I'm very against it and I made this thread just to tell people about what my friend thought.

It is a pretty piss-poor argument, but it's nothing to freak out over. If he wants to be an arse, let him. Take solace in the fact that you're a better person than him.

Out of all the arguments one could make for piracy, he probably chose won of the worst.
Your friend is a dumbass.

I think you may be overreacting over the situation, but not to his comment. I, also, had a friend that would constantly pirate and illegally download everything he could. Half of the time it wasn't because he was interested, but because he thought it was funny that he could. He always aggravated me with his child-like behavior towards multiple things, but his pirating tendencies were only a problem because they were obsessive and needless.

In my opinion, one pirate, here and there, does nobody any harm, as long as it is meant for its original purpose. As long as your friend just plays Skyrim, and not burn it onto another disc and sell it to someone else for his own money, he's fine.

One of my friends had that same attitude and was always so up in my face about it whenever he got a new game free that i didn't find the money to buy.

Incidently we don't talk much anymore xP

I used to pirate games and I always swore that should I have the money to spare I would immediately buy the games I have pirated. I thought of it as the I'll pay yo tuesday for a hamburgr today policy. I have since fulfilled that promise. (minus anything from EA. I bought those used mwahahaha. As I've said before sorry devs but your publisher is evil. If I could buy directly from you guys and bypass EA I would without a second thought.) I no longer pirate at all and I'm happy to support the devs.

There is a general satisfaction of actually having paid for something good imo. And honestly his argument falls flat when you have the same option of getting it for free. Jealousy is a stupid argument that only a small child would come up with. He has no reason to not buy it. Especially for Skyrim because you definitely get your money's worth. I pretty much gave up what little money I had for it. Which meant I was stuck with nothing but my college's cafeteria food and not being able to do some things but every-time I open up skyrim I know that it was worth it and it feels good.

your friend isn't really being a good friend. I know thats being all after school special but if he just thinks your jealous becasue he's doing something illegal he needs to sit down and re-evaluate his life. i'm not sayign its a slippery slope or a gateway crime or wahtever. but if you have the money and the means and you still pirate you are only hurting yourself and the games industry. You are the reason we keep getting insane DRM on everything. Tell him because he's pirates we can't have nice things.

I don't really think the spoiler was necessary. You could easily imply that you were against piracy from what was already written.

Your friend is a thief.

His selfish actions directly hurt the games industry and they hurt YOU, seeing as how all that DRM everybody fucking hates are because of people like him.

"You are just jealous" is a the worst justification of criminal activity I've ever heard.

You didn't overreact, he's a selfish little thief, plain and simple.

Well duh. You're paying for something he can get for free, no risks attached.

Still not very nice and mostly illegal, but it's not like he's eating puppies or anything.
Relax.

You are right to be upset, this guy is a total douche. You have my permission, as some virtually anonymous guy on the internet, to pour grape soda on his keyboard.
Seriously though i know guys like this, i really hate the sense of entitlement people have, like these companies are being done a favour by having you play there game.

Being pretty much anti-pirate myself, I'd say there's nothing wrong with reporting him to the authorities.

Just sayin'.

Your friends sounds like a dick in denial about the moral decision he made, but I think your overreacting, if he wants to obtain a copy illegally and be an arse about it, so be it, it's his prerogative.

I hear this all the time about games, movies, music, etc.

I refuse to illegally obtain any of the aforementioned media. People will tell me how stupid I am for paying for things I could easily obtain for free, but to me it's just disrespectful to steal something somebody has worked to create, distribute, and hoped to make a profit on.
