depends on the character's role, fighter class character's get the burly, bearded, brute treatment, mages are old and rogues get very slim facial features.

I go for generic McHandsome. yeah completely default i just want to play, the look of the character is fine as i don't put myself in the position i figure out the characters personality as i play and then make decisions around it.

I have two methods. Usually I decide on a character concept and base the appearance on something that suits it but has a couple unusual quirks. If I want to have a bit of silly fun though I pick one of my friends and model the character's appearance on them. I then pick a different friend and model the character's behavior on that person. I then choose a third friend to name the character after. I used to have a roll table for it, but I'm not sure where that is anymore. Sometimes this method makes for an interesting character, sometimes it means I play a big burly scarred guy named Jessica who's a calm friendly dude who occasionally enjoys playing up the flaming gay stereotype for shits&giggles.(That one was actually a one-off tabletop game)

It entirely depends on what customization options are offered. If you've got a limited color palette, hair styles, eye colors, etc. (think Mass Effect), then I'll usually go for either brown or red hair, blue or green eyes. If, however, there are a wide variety, then I tend to have fun. I like going for crazy hair colors like light pink or emerald green, I usually go for either long and elegant or short but wild hair styles (depends on the game). Sometimes I'll add some kind of facial markings, and I usually like to add some jewelry. That's usually all I pay attention to when building my characters since the rest of the body is usually covered in armor.

I generally settle for whatever preset character design looks most like me or is just ruggedly handsome. The girl characters I've made seem to fall under this criteria as well because I end up going for that short-hair "tomboy" look nine times out of ten.

When indecision strikes, I find that the best way to create a character template is to go through each individual shape slider and set to as "middle" as possible. This is how I designed my Commander Shepherd, anyway.

Usually it's a girl, because I don't wanna spend hours staring at some guy's ass. Last time (Dragon Age) it was Gates McFadden circa 1986. Currently in Dragon's Dogma: DA, it's Kaine' from Nier, b/c I thought she was a more interesting character.

Hmm... a lot of dragon going on there.... why aren't there more good SF rpg's?

Nobody say Mass Effect. I said GOOD sci-fi rpgs.

I generally make dozens of characters, and they all must look different. I started Dark Souls not knowing there was more in-depth customisation of the faces, so my first about 5 characters all got preset faces. I deleted them. I cannot stand preset faces where I could have done better.

That said, there are about 2 general ones I try to recreate appearance-wise. Rex, a massive older male with shaggy-ish silver hair and silver eyes, bit o' stubble, scars if possible, first seen in Dragon's Dogma, and my initial Monster Hunter character, a well-built black male with a long fringe to one side that is lime (think full green and two thirds red RGB). I know, silly, but it's tradition now. As I've said, other than that I go for all sorts. I don't really have any other option, I like each character to be different. I generally make more males, and they tend to be square-jawed types, but about two fifths are female and sometimes I put in what I think are drastic features on a whim and they turn out alright. Don't want to be stuck in the rut where you make the same face because you notice the changes a lot better in the customisation screen than you ever would in-game.

I also have Jinro, who isn't tied down appearance-wise but where applicable will be a massive heavy-weapons wielding orc or monstrous human, with good crafting skill and a bit of fire magic to aid in smithing. Sort of a prepackaged backstory. But since orcs aren't always available he's not defined in the looks department. It really depends on what's there. Although, underbite is fairly easy to recreate.

EDIT: Also though, I understand there are a large portion of people who are averse to making male characters because they prefer a female's ass. It strikes me as something fairly unaccomodating to role play within the game though. I don't think either way about it, regardless of the character I use, unless the armour's real silly.

Always end up making my character look like a thief. Like to say that I usually end up picking a class that tailors to being a thief. Basically a character that can't take damage, yet is good at picking locks and runs fast. You know I always pick a female character. Know if it's possible, she will be in all black with something covering her face. Do remember my character in Fallout 3 having the skills of a thief. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what class I picked in Dark Souls.

Inhuman option, and the less human the better.

If I have no choice in that regards, as in SR games, then I try to re-create me, and promptly run into traffic to amuse guests/friends.

If I have no choice, as in there are four default models, or like in Diablo3 or something, then it is usually random as to what I'll play... I guess I usually start with a straight up bruiser class to get the feel for the combat, then in the next play through I'll go for a mage or something more 'exotic' (bearing in mind I'd rather play a monster).

I usually won't play a female character, nor an elf, but having said that, if I have no choice in that regards, I'll roll with it.

I'm almost always basing it loosely off of how I look: white skin, brown hair, brown eyes, and athletic build. After that, it is generally tailored to whatever world the game is in. If it is fantasy, the character will probably have longer hair, as opposed to shorter hair in sci-fi. Other changes are made accordingly.

However, sometimes I do make a character that has nothing to do with me. In Skyrim I made a Viking with blonde hair, pale skin, blue eyes, and a muscular build. Any female character I make will probably have darker skin and hair.

Any time it's a Bioware game, I create an aged man, an orange friar tuck, his face, long and gaunt, with a hawk nose and a long, pointed chin. His cheeks are sunken in, and his cheekbones rise as high as mountains. His face is pockmarked and scarred with experience. He has an average frame. He is... The Man From History.

Usually they all look close to how I"d look, with a bit of variety, depending on the names I use. I have different characters' for different classes. My mage is tall, black hair, green eyes and a bit of a bigger bust. My thief is brown hair, green/gray eyes, and a bit tall and athletic. My hybrid ... well, it's all green/gray eyes and brown/red/black hair, slightly taller than average. Which is kind of all me, as my hair is brown (but I have dyed it red in the past and would like to dye it black but my skin doesn't suit it), and my eyes are blue/gray, but I have worn green contacts for 16 years. I'm slightly above average for height, too.

I usually make the skin slightly darker though. Still white, but usually a bit darker. For some reason, I feel guilty if my character is as white as the options allow. Which is what I am in real life, but I feel bad somehow.

I have a weird habbit of making my character as weak/innocent looking as possible, just cause I find it kinda fun when said character then owns everything. Usually this means a female character, as you can't really do that with males in most games.

Even though I know my character will be hidden by armor, I sometimes spend hours on the looks if there are a lot of options.
It should also be mentioned that I flat out refuse to wear helmets in any game if I can. If I am not able to hide it, I simply won't wear it, no matter how much of a stat boost or armor it gives.

Male characters tend to be huge, overly muscular and I go back and forth between black and white skin.
Female characters tend to be overly sexualized OR absolutely tiny OR as fat as they can be. Yet again I go back and forth skin colour.
However, my characters always have handsome /beautiful faces regardless of race, sex or body type. They have clean, well groomed hair if good or natural, but messy, dirty hair if evil.

If I can choose gender I will almost always choose female, but there are exceptions. I tend to change it up a bit in the looks department too, although I'll often make either a pale redhead with pale eyes or a darkskinned lady - often with pale eyes. I have hazel AKA brown eyes myself, always wanted green =( And if I'm going to have this awful pale skin, couldn't I have got red hair too? =(

(A secret wish of mine since I was a kid has been to have dark skin and the features that go with it. Think it's so pretty! Instead I'm Pale McFishbellywhite. Guess I'll "make do" with white privilege instead =P)

I usually try to make my character as modest as possible. Someone who would blend into a crowd like a real person, but still looks fairly attractive. I avoid overly blingy armor along with plate bikinis and try to make it look as practical as possible. They're usually white or even overly pale for no real reason other than I think it looks nice.

Of course it depends on the game and what is allowed, but:

Punk/Goth/Vampy type females are always a favourite of mine to create and stare for hours whilst mass-murdering with her.
If I can't go fully Punk/Goth, just pale and dark looking.

Males I tend to make very average, normal and simple (default John Shepard from mass effect type characters).

If I can make monsters or non-humans I tend to go for extreme big demon looking things with spikes everywhere.
