A fully restored san andreas. that game was EPIC! all you needed to do was run around and gun down ballas. that, with new graphics and engine would be really, REALLY good

hahaha that was my original thought. good luck convincing rockstar to do anything as shameful as a revisitation... oh... lost and the damned...and.. bogt...same setting with cheap story crossovers... oh... right. uhmm.. yeah forgot about that little one there...

if i may intervene, im liking some of the ideas put forward. however, im not real sure that comments like "more like saints row" are really relevant.

ever since 2007 or 8 when gta came out i saw the distinct difference in ambition between gta and saints row - saints row was a game that didnt take itself seriously and with that freedom was able to experiment with all sorts of crazy ideas. gta was all about a story driven, heavily atmospheric interative story experience. I personally think this is a mistake considering the previous titles but i can respect the direction they are going in.

where they went wrong with gta IV was definetly the KIND of atmosphere they were trying to create. i am a giant san andreas fanboy so ignore anything you might consider a fanboy raving.

san andreas hit the proverbial nail on the head in terms of atmosphere and subsequent gameplay experience due to the fact that it had a beautiful atmosphere that even in the shitty ps2 processing power restraints of yesteryear they pulled off extremely well. i loved the setting because the colour spectrum, soundtrack and art direction used within the different areas made them distinctive and created a sense of diversity and freedom. hanging around in los santos was a very old-school NWA hip hop oriented area, where gangsta rap and warm orange sunsets created an ironically comfortable and neighbourly feel. head out into the desert and you got your hard 80s rock and hot reds contrasted with endless blue skies; the country areas gave way to a classic country rock soundtrack washed across your red dusty pickup dashboard as you drove through the misty woods and white-america counties.

in addition, san andreas allowed you to make a character while still maintaining a very specific story. cj's skills and aesthetics made him unique to each player while still keeping him grounded within his own story. i found this aspect lost somewhat in saints row 2, as the extreme level of customisation made the story feel spread too thinly to accommodate for all the possible character styles.

so, i guess the point of all this is that for me personally, art direction, soundtrack and freedom are the 3 key elements to creating a truly beautiful artwork of a game. gta IV failed in this regard because all the characters were whiney pessimistic bitches, the city was all colours of the poo and metal spectrum and the soundtracks really had no bearing on the story at all. some of my greatest gaming memories were driving from mt chilida to blueberry while listening to dolly parton and willie nelson in a roaring old 4x4, or shooting down government hydras with white wedding by billy idol blaring in my headphones.

cmon rockstar, bring the next one home for the oldschool fans!!!

I still think that the next GTA should have some of the feel of GTA 4, after all, if Rockstar go back to San Andreas style, they're actually going to be accused of copying Saint's Row, which isn't going to look good, and a lot of people did actually enjoy GTA 4, for it's flaws, tho I agree the social element has to go, or be made more enjoyable, and the main protagonist needs to be made more fun, or CJ style customisable.

I'm still holding out for GTA : Great Britain, where you start out a lowly cockney criminal, 'snatch' style, and work your way up, eventually needing to branch out, so you fly to the airport, and can go to either Belfast, Manchester, or Glasgow to continue. 4 very different cities with different feels, just connected by a quick cutscene.

For obvious reasons I make the airports a loading screen only, as it doesn't give Fox half an hour of hyperbole about how we're training terrorists.

I don't think it would be too niche, as I think a lot of Americans find Britain interesting, and you could re-use the same old gag about needing subtitles, only this time it's everyone, not just the Rasta guy.

Fix the horrible aiming, and the "realistic" physics. I liked how the cars handled before. The fun ended for me with the "out-of-control" driving, even at slow speeds. The whole whole social scene they tried to introduce to the game needs to die as well. I hate having everyone call me in the middle of a mission to hang out.

I loved GTA4, and still play it just for fun even after clocking it, the only thing i dislike is people calling up all the time asking to hang out. Apart from that all they can do is expand xD

I would like to see a return of the San Andreas elements of customizing your character.

There was so much less fun involved with Niko Bellic....he was boring....and that made the game more boring.

I agree with most of the opinions above. Time for a return to fun. Ditch the realism and go back to the fun.

More terrain, by that I mean like San Fierro in San Andreas. More off-road, country sides. That would be awesome, plus adding hydra.

On one hand I liked Saint's Row 2 better than GTA4, but they're already making a Saint's Row 3, so... I want GTA5 to stay true to what sets GTA apart from games like Saint's Row, but still bring back the sense of fun somehow. Let's not get too bogged down in the game being set in the real world.
Also, make it control better. I tried to play GTA4 recently and it was clunky as shit. I don't know how I ever finished it in the first place.

Cars you can actually drive. The ones in IV behave like the city's streets are covered by a sheet of frozen ice.
