Edit: And now I'm off to read my current Warhammer 40k book. Its the third one of the Horus Heresy, I can't remember the name.
Should be Galaxy in Flames, as I'm reading the same one.

OT:Bigger maps, Individual campaigns and more RTS feeeling.
And stay away from Games for Windows Live.
Other than that I'm pretty much happy with what Relic have done up to now.

Bring back base building and all of the races available in DoW. Maybe it's just me but the idea of an RTS without proper bases is a step backwards.

Pretty much remake Dow1 as of Soulstorm with bugfixes, better optimization (that campaign map takes an absolute age to load... Thanks Iron Lore.) and graphics. And maybe either write a more believable story to for the campaign or have the Imperial forces fight alongside each other in one side of the campaign and have the rest of the races' campaigns a separate fight against the Imperial campaign.

I would like to see a new game mode that's turn based and models itself after the tabletop game. Hell, they should be able to come out with something like that for the mobile market considering how much less processing power is needed.
Try Chaosgate. Older game, still Ultramarines but turn-based with a limited roster and you load out individual marines instead of by squad. Think X-Com's combat mechanics in the 40K universe. Good game.

Though, if we're starting to break away from the RTS mold and more of what we want to see from the 40K IP in video game form, I'd like to state I'd love to see a Dark Heresy survival-horror game, or even a Deathwing game where you hunt and kill Fallen that incorporates combat, investigation, and criminal (disposing of evidence, torturing the Fallen for repentance, eliminating witnesses) play.
I have Chaos Gate and Final Liberation but what I'm thinking of is more of an updated version of Final Liberation but not "Epic" scale. Chaos gate was fun but reminded me more of the original Rogue Trader rules than the more current rules.
Final Liberation was fun but old and almost as buggy as New Vegas.

Well, the thing is lore-wise the Imperium tends to turn on itself as much as Chaos does. The Space Marines are the Emperor's chosen and anyone else gets in the way and is relatively expendable; the Guardsmen view Marines and the Daemonhunters as the few that swoop in at the last minute and take all the glory and recognition for themselves while the guard does the real work; and the Daemonhunters view everyone (especially Space Marines, the only reason the Grey Knights get the pass is because they're in the Inquisition's pocket and beyond reproach) as potential heretics and corrupt. The only time the Imperium really bands together is in the face of an overwhelming, undeniable threat like a Tyranid hive fleet, Black Crusade, or WAAAGH!, and usually at the last possible second before all is completely lost.

Add in outside influences like the Eldar (with whom even the Inquisition will play ball if it suits their needs, they just deny it) or Chaos Gods who'll dump a Dark Angel battle barge deep in Space Wolves territory purely for the lulz and it just gets...messy.

Maybe two separate campaigns with mostly different missions, instead of how Retribution did it? I dunno, I have not played Retribution yet, but I would like to have maybe two different intersecting stories to play through.

Also, I have yet to play the original Dawn of War games, are they worth playing? I mean I really do enjoy Dawn of War II and the universe itself and I don't mind traditional RTS mechanics I guess, but do they hold up well?

Edit: Also, if I do buy it and all it's expansions, should I skip Soulstorm? I heard it was pretty bad.

Personally, the one thing about DOW2 that really disappointed me was the lack of base building. I played British in CoH, and -loved- it. Long-range artillery, machine gun nests, trenches lined with soldiers. I could advance slowly and efficiently, creeping devastation against them.

DoW2 never really scratched that particular itch, and the fact that they left my favorite race (Chaos) out of the original game left me pretty sour about it. Hopefully they can rectify both, as the 'simplified' base construction of the sequel didn't really sit well with me.
