Yeah you know, most people get a degree in things they'll use.

Some people will go just to expand their knowledge in a specific area (possibly your friend in theology), perhaps she just wanted to learn more on the subject and never intended to work in that profession.
In the case of this I say nope. When I found out about her choice of course I asked her about it thinking something similar to what you suggested. She did it because she had no idea what else to do... waste of time.

I wanted to leave that one out, now I find I can't. I wouldn't pin that on UNI offering useless degrees, I'd pin that on someone who had no idea what they wanted to do so picked something at random. Which is ridiculous.
I don't think uni's have useless degrees I mean if your aiming to be a Religious Studies teacher or professor a degree in theology is probably quite useful. But getting a random degree because you can is just moronic.
