I remember a few months ago me and my girlfriend would dispute about the fact that she was a hardcore gamer. She said she was, but I would to this day say she's not. She only played music games and maybe some Mario racing on the wii. But of course, this definition is a form of opinion. So, what do you think someone has to do or fall under to be considered a legit gamer?

Here are some ideas I thought of.

1.Have played all the genres
2.Have played with other players.
3.Has a game collection
4.Has their own sophisticated opinions on games.
5.Plays on a 3 day basis.
6.Have been inspired to do something by video games. Like join this forum.
7.Hopefully can aim a gun in a fps. Assuming they play them often.
8.Last but not least. Has thrown a remote of some kind some were.

So any ideas from you guys?

Well, like any label, there's always different levels of it. On one hand, you don't normally label people who have wine on the weekends as drinkers. Drinkers are those who party hardy or simply are alcoholics.
Drivers can be people like me who have a real passion for it, but also old grannies who go 5 under the limit and accelerate like they're on their electric wheelchair.

So I'd say she is a gamer, but you're a more hardcore gamer. As am I, I'm happy to report :)

My gf might consider herself a gamer as well, but she's only played some simple puzzle/mystery point and click games, the Sims (apparently she used to be addicted), maybe an rpg, and with me she's played (and liked) DJ Hero, DA:O, and Assassin's Creed 2. She doesn't have much interest in the rest of my collection it seems. I'd say she fails most of your criteria.

I'd say they:
1) can make the sound when you open a chest in zelda
2) can correctly spell "pwn"
3) know what game Gordon Freeman is from

it's a fairly solid definition, whilst also being very accepting

That's about right. A footballer is somebody who plays football. A tennis player is somebody who plays tennis. It doesn't matter if the tennis player plays double or solo, it doesn't matter if the football player plays quarterback or any other position. A gamer is somebody who plays games, no matter which ones.

"Gamer" is a description of a hobby, not some honorary title.

I'd say anyone who plays a video game regularly. Anything more than that and you can go into detail of how much of an "intense gamer" one is or what have you, but at the end of the day, if you play video games, you're a gamer.

1. Person has grown some form of an intelligent view on games (more than: Most games are stupid except for this kind of game or do more than play fitness-y Wii games))

2. Person is willing to at least try and do somewhat well in most games after given about half an hour with it, given they start at the beggining.

3. Has pride in their skill in at least one game (I'm proud that I can hold my own in most FPS and RTS games)

4. Has raged at a game at least once

5. Knows who classic nintendo game charcters are (Mario, Luigi, Samus, etc.)

6. Owns a console/gaming PC, and uses it regularly

I know I did say "But of course, this definition is a form of opinion." that's pretty much what I meant by that. I also included legit in the title.

These are accomplishable by a person who has never in their life played a single digital game. All you need is one annoying gamer friend.

As for rules:
1)To be a gamer you have to play games and not consider it a guilty pleasure.
2)Refer to 1)

If they consider themselves one? Yes. Being a gamer isn't some exclusive fucking club, we aren't the god damned Illuminati. It's a hobby, stop being an elitist dick and grow up.
Relax I wasn't making fun of him or trying to be offensive I was just asking his opinion. And I know I wanted to know what people thought it took to be a hardcore gamer. Sorry I didn't mention that.

I don't see why you have to label yourself? Can someone please explain to me what's the deal with labelling yourself, and labelling others.

EDIT: By legit is there a club and does said club have complementary juice?
Yes there is a club, and yes there is juice, but you have to bring your own cookies

someone who plays games=gamer. Simple as that

Labels just make it easier to specify a group of people. And no just complementary chips and soda sorry.
