Hardcore?

As in no life sits 10 inches from their screen and doesnt leave it except to answer the door to the takeaway guy?

Or hardcore as in you kick ass.

Personally a Hardcore gamer is someone who spend a lot of time playing (but not necessarily to the point of obsession) but is also very good.

Almost always this means you have competed competitively on some level. Whether it be in ladder matches during an announced period where points will be recored. Something like Arena in WoW but any mmo. Or in organised clan scrims on an FPS/RTS.

You dont necessarily have to win anything but place moderately highly. Say the top 40-50% or so. If you play rather than go to the pub with mates, and you still cant do at least that. Find a new hobby.

I have some alternatives;

Has spent rent/bill money or other 'proper' cash on games
Has an encyclopeidic knowledge of where all the hidden spots are in seemingly any game
Has at some point been invited round someones house for the sole purpose of completing a boss/level its owner can't manage
Can smoke a joint and snipe at the same time
Knows exactly how long they can leave their tea standing before its too cold
Fingers instinctivly hover over WASD when at a keyboard-even at work

What ever this social groups seem more of a way chavs can try and insult me. Last I heard all us internet dwellers were nerds if they watched films played games and of course spent their time on the internet. Yes I have heard of gamers prior to this thread it was just my understanding that was something people put down as a hobby didn't know it was a whole new social class.
"The Gamer" seems to have emerged as a minority social group, one that is gaining increased membership and is at the lower levels (those described by some as casual gamers) ceasing to be an identifiable social group. (or something like that)
I can't believe how old this is all making me feel. I'm sixteen the last time all this social grouping stuff came up was when I was 12-14 and gave a shit what people thought of me. After giving up on that it all seemed to drift apart. Two years ago there where nerds, populars and chavs. That was it. In two years it has all evolved... Damn!
How about we forget all of this social grouping stuff and make something different. Something called The Individual. Not tied to any social grouping or stigma associated with said groups.
Ha, Noone's individual just do what you want to, do when you want to do it who gives a shit what others think. Unless of course it is school work then do it when you get it regardless of if you want to or not.

There let that be written in the books of history.

So You guys all seem to be taking this a bit too seriously.

1. The person is good at the game
2. They're a completionist
3. They're not there to dick around, just win/kill and have fun when possible
4. They don't have to play often
5. The game they're playing is either violent or requires a lot of thinking/strategy

^This is for "hardcore gamer" not just "gamer" because I consider someone to be a gamer if they're simply playing a game.

I remember a few months ago me and my girlfriend would dispute about the fact that she was a hardcore gamer. She said she was, but I would to this day say she's not. She only played music games and maybe some Mario racing on the wii. But of course, this definition is a form of opinion. So, what do you think someone has to do or fall under to be considered a legit gamer?

Here are some ideas I thought of.

1.Have played all the genres
2.Have played with other players.
3.Has a game collection
4.Has their own sophisticated opinions on games.
5.Plays on a 3 day basis.
6.Have been inspired to do something by video games. Like join this forum.
7.Hopefully can aim a gun in a fps. Assuming they play them often.
8.Last but not least. Has thrown a remote of some kind some were.

So any ideas from you guys?
In the last two weeks I've played LAN Aoe2and3, CNC3:TibSun and Diablo II for more than about 2-3 hours a day with 2 other people, I also have a commodore 64 in my wardrobe alongside an N64 and my lego. I've recently finished a year bout of playing WoW to give it a fair chance, clocked in nearly 16 hours a day on holidays when I really got into it.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, I can't support it cash-wise.

Yes. Stop trying to make it some sort of holy prize. If you play a game youre a gamer...end of discussion. If you want to have your own standards thats your thing.

If they consider themselves one? Yes. Being a gamer isn't some exclusive fucking club, we aren't the god damned Illuminati. It's a hobby, stop being an elitist dick and grow up.
For someone who misread his thread, you two sure talk smug, he is asking what entitles you to be called a HARDCORE gamer. By that he is clearly not referring to a non-casual sort of gamer, but someone who games much more seriously than the average gamer.

If someone said to me they were a hardcore gamer... I'd think they have either gotten into a few games, probably more than they should have, or they'll generally own you in others xD

edit:

Anyone who play and enjoys games on either a console or PC is a gamer. Maybe you only play wii games for exercise and you're casual gamer. Maybe you have all three consoles, a high end gaming PC and a wall full of games and you're a hardcore gamer. There are many more levels to it now, where as before you either were or weren't a gamer, no uncertain levels or grey area. Almost every teenage male owns some sort of console or PC, and casual games are ever expanding. Those who go onto forums and focus largely on games in their lives are certainly more hardcore gamers, but no the only gamers around anymore.

Hardcore gamer definition? Somebody who plays a variety of games across genres throughout the day, every day.

Not tooting my own horn or anything but I usually start the day off with a Runescape session, then after lectures it's something shooty or drivey and in the evening it's something multiplayer (dual screen or online) with my housemate when he gets in from work till the early hours, rinse lather repeat.
And I consider myself a pretty average-core gamer.

by your description she is not a hardcore gamer, unless she could compete reasonably well on the mentioned games against the best of the best.

I would say their are variations but the real hardcore gamer should know some gaming history and have at least dabbled in all genres.

And I would say mario cart (and similar), music, and internet games in general should not count when calculating someones hardcore gamer score.

In general I would say playing the non popular games are the biggest identifiers, playing the latest guitar hero, sports, halo is for casuals.

To me, being a gamer is just playing games often and having some knowledge of them and the industry.
If you play Peggle for an hour a day and couldn't tell me the three main consoles on the market, gamer you are not. You are my grandfather who doesn't know how to use e-mail.

But my definition of a "hardcore" gamer is someone who's life has a stronger base in gaming; they spend upwards of two hours a day gaming, they've had experience in the majority of genres, respect for the classics, and have an ear out for the news circulating. Maybe even spend time on a gaming forum?

I'd say they:
1) can make the sound when you open a chest in zelda
2) can correctly spell "pwn"
3) know what game Gordon Freeman is from

it's a fairly solid definition, whilst also being very accepting
Damn, dude, then me mum is a gamer, and has only ever played some Pokemon Blue when she worked on the ambulance.

Someone who plays games on a video game console/PC regularly.
That's low standereds so if someone plays wii workout regularly they is a gamer?
If its a game, it qualifies.
