What does Nintendo need to do?

For years, the main console wars have been Sony vs. Microsoft, talking about how they could outdo each other. Every time I saw this debate, my question was: What about Nintendo? And every time, the answer seems to be the same: They're playing a different game, marketing to a different audience, so they shouldn't be considered. And that makes sense - for the Wii, at least. However, I think the Wii U is a different story. It's got much of the third party support of the other two, and it's more focused on games than either of them. So my question is: What does Nintendo have to do to get back in the same league? What criteria do they lack that they need to be considered with the other two? Because the way I see it, they're just as worthy as Microsoft at this point.

They just need games that I want to play which aren't on any other platform.

Release new Zelda, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta II, New 3d Mario, new Smash Bros, new Metroid, SMt X Fire Emblem etc. When that happens I'll pick one up.

barely anything besides releasing games at this point. MS has pretty much shot themselves in the foot with the Xbone reveal

Get some killer games out and fast because at the moment they have no momentum they are just lucky Microsoft has shot itself in the foot and they have been given another chance they cannot afford to waste it.

Phase out the gimmicks that affect the gameplay experience (Playstation and Xbox have them primarily as optional extras in that regard), have the Wii-U "Pro" controller become standard (though with the option to be wired or wireless rechargeable). Hell, just bring the Gamecube controller back if that is what it takes.

Have a fine balance of the tried and true first party titles alongside new IPs coming from Nintendo directly.
Provide additional incentive for third party support and for them to release their titles exclusively (timed or not) on their system.

Have their next console contain the hardware needed to compete with the others.
Have their next console have a good name that is different from its predecessor.
Have a steady release schedule.

All easier said than done, of course.
But with that said, the Wii U interests me heavily and I'm curious as to what will happen when the good games do come around to being released. Will it be like the 3DS and pick up steam further down the road and become amazing? Or will it be a perpetual disappointment? Because it certainly isn't like the Wii, which was an instant massive success.

They need to realize that the only ones who care about Zelda and Mario and all those other IP's are people who bought the system already anyways and actually get some new IP's that are fresh original and most of all fun. They also need to show that they can make more than childrens games. I don't mind a light hearted game but at the same time I enjoy a more adult themed game as well like MGS, GTA, Saints Row, Assassin Creed etc.

Basically they need to get out of their comfort zone.

at this point:

1. let microsoft continue to unload a full clip of 22s into their foot

2. hope sony tries to copy them

3. be the only horse left in the race.

The thing the WiiU and 3ds need the most at the moment is more popular games on them. It's the biggest problem both consoles have atm, imo. Not enough good/new games on them to warrant buying them over what people already have at home. The standard zelda/mario/pokemon/something im probably missing aren't enough, and the other games that could warrant a sale, you can often also get on the ps3/xbox360. The only one that could maybe warrant a sale would be the bayonetta 2 exclusive and in the 3DS case, maybe the pokemon and kirby games? But that's about it.

The other option would have been to make a console that could run games the older generation wasn't good enough to play, but they didn't. Which is their own fault really.

Now that it's been revealed that Nintendo and Sega are buddying up, it would be an opportune time for Nintendo to maybe try persuading them to make new installments of such games as Power Stone, Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, etc exclusively for Nintendo consoles. We already know the Wii U and 3DS are the only places to go for our Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Smash Bros fixes but imagine if the Wii U were marketed as a way to go back to the golden age of gaming? Only now instead of being at each others throats Nintendo and Sega are working together to bring out and bring back excellent games. What I'd really like to see though (pipedream) is a Mario/Sonic cross over adventure with equality. Something like Mario RPG where a new villain is introduced and that forces everyone on both sides to work together. Imagine Mario using the Chaos Emeralds or Sonic using a Mega-Mushroom? That's just one idea: in the mean time how about a sequel to Comic Zone centered around Manga?

People keep saying they need to keep making new Mario/Zelda/Metroid games. Ya.... no. They should keep making them, sure, but that isn't going to save their sinking ship. They need to make some god damn new IP, and they have to stop trying to keep everything nice and clean. I would like to see a mature game by Nintendo (and by mature I don't mean Gears of War, I mean a game that actually has meaning to it that isn't to PG). Even if they won't get rid of their family friendly image (which is ironic coming from the company that once operated pay by the hour hotels) just give me something new. I mean, you don't have hardly any third party support and its not going to be getting any better from here so you need to pick up some slack.

I will sell my car to afford a WiiU if they ever did this. Dear Lord, you'd need a squeegee to clean off my TV at that point.

I think it's a bit silly to be arguing over what Nintendo would have to do to persuade over the playerbases of the Xbox and Playstation. They're targeting a different market. They don't need to do anything, although I'd rather they left me alone while they did whatever it is they do to appeal to their chosen market. But if they did want some of those playerbases, do away with gimmicks and shovelware, then port enough games over that you don't feel like you're losing out on the majority of games by choosing the Nintendo console as your one gaming console. And hey, maybe do something interesting with the touchscreen asynchronous multiplayer stuff. Fuck motion control, but the asynchronous stuff could go somewhere. Not really anything that Sony and Microsoft can't do, but something they probably wouldn't care to do. I suppose you can say Nintendo have been trying to push the boundaries of gaming sonce touch screens and motion control, but they never seem to capitalise and end up with something really good.

Oh and more mature games. Madworld comes to mind.

They need to release a console that can't play games we've basically been playing for the 7 years but now with a tablet controller. Graphics hold more weight than people are willing to admit. Sure, they release a game like ZombieU but what really separates that from any random Zombie game like dead rising which we've been able to play since the Xbox and ps3 launched? At least when I look at a game like the new Kill Zone or a Crysis game for pc I can say "there's something I haven't been able to play this gen". It's not just visuals but physics and the amount of content that can be fit on screen thanks to ram and better APUs

Stop making exactly the same games over and over and invent some new, original IP.

What that other guy said. You'd need a squeegee to clean off my tv at that point. I will buy 2 Wii U's. MAKE A KICKSTARTER GOD DAMN IT!
