A mere puddle to the 200 million killed by the communists. And also to me it means it shows how far someone will stand up for their beliefs.

I'm not entirely sure of the numbers but I think the Christians take home the blue ribbon for ethnic cleansing.
The Communist purges in the Soviet Union, China, and Cambodia combined have estimates that exceed 1 billion on the high end. You really think Christianity comes anywhere close to that?

It means the Nazi just applied their usual German efficiency to a task many a nation (or church) has set out to do before: EXTERMINATE THE UNLIKE!!! I mean, wouldn't be no Americans but for the Judeo-Christian jihad.

And far more Russians died in German hands, but we care less about them than even Jews, so it never gets mentioned.

To me, the Holocaust is just another interesting social meme. Sure millions of people died horribly, but its not the only event to ever slaughter millions.

The fact that it took place in such a short compressed time, and was directed at such a specific group, and was so well documented makes it far easier for societies to compartmentalize it and label it. Its a fascinating venture into social evolution.

It demonstrates that humans need to compartmentalize and cordon off ideas and things. To make black and white lines between whatever and non-whatever.

Its more important to study the Holocaust as a psychological idea than an actual historical event. Understanding why it has become so culturally pervasive after 70 years might actually help us understand how the human mind can lense a single event way out of proportion to the events around it. Understanding it might actually help prevent people from grouping peoples/places/things and events. It might help us prevent further atrocities.

Yes. Lots of people died. But thats been happening since the beginning of time. We don't need to lament over it; we need to understand it.

Snap! And to top it off all the leaders of those countries were atheists Mr. randvek so don't go blaming this all on Christianity.

The reason the Holocaust mean more to people than the Russians standing up for their country, is because the Russians stood a chance, not a big chance, but they stood a chance. When you take a defenseless, unarmed, civilian people and decide to kill them all, it gets attention. Now, if you were to talk about Stalin's ruthless killing of hundreds of millions of his own people, I would be more sympathetic towards the Russians.

I'll tell you like this, I care about it as much as I care about Mt. Vesuvius going ker-blooie.

I feel bad people died, but it was someone else's lifetime ago, and it doesn't affect me. So worrying about it at all would be kind of pretentious and egocentric, since it literally had absolutely nothing to do with me.

I'm talking about Russian civilians and POWs, not military casualties. Depending on what sources you use, upwards of 12 million unarmed Russian (or more accurately, Soviets) died at German hands. I also left out the Poles, the homosexuals, the gypsies, the Jehovah's Witnesses, and many others, who numbered up to 5 million.

And if there's one thing history has taught us, it's that everyone looks back on other people's mistakes and says "Those dipshits! I'll do it the right way!". Then proceeds to fuck up the whole program. Two times.

I find it entertaining sometimes. And before I have negative comments quote that, I'll have you know that I find entertainment value in everything, I believe I have the ability to laugh at my own death while I'm experiencing it. I find it entertaining because it reminds me of the stupidity of France and Britan in allowing Germany to rise a second time.
Anyway, the Holocaust is the main symbol of the cruelty of the Nazis, it is also the sterotype for genocide.
So most of all it brings out a big "woah" from me, for the scope of the entire 'project', as well as the scope of the suffering experienced by the individual.
As it is in the past, it doesn't really sicken me, I'm too busy being sickened by the human race in general.

To me, it means that humanity can and will sink to horrific lows in the name of scapegoating and desperation.

I care more about the Russians!
But the Russians were steamrolled, those in the way were destroyed.
The Jewish people were rounded up like cattle and slaughtered.

i got sick of hearing about it growing up
i always found the war itself very interesting but every year of school we only talked about it for like a week and then they spent a month making sure we all knew that EXTERMINATING PEOPE IS BAD!
I just think of it as Hitlers mark on history

So i assume you too have the "devoir de mémoire" aka duty to remember and tell the others.
for me the holocaust is a symbol of great suffering and coldness. i went to some of the extermination and concentration camps too as the inaugural first educational trip that the french government made, it was in december 2005 or 2006 and the top 5 students of every Collège/mediumschool... i remember there was a survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau too called Charles Gottlieb that was telling us everything about it:

it is hard not to weep tears.

You think it was any different in the occupied East? That it was just the exigencies of war? No, it was planned and carried out with the sole goal of extermination. The Germans just couldn't spare the transport in the USSR, so they killed 'em where they stood.

BTW, Jews aren't a "race". They practice a religion.

Just a lovely glance at how fucked humanity is since we've barely learned from it. Or maybe I'm just a cynic. Is that the right word?
"a distrust toward professed ethical and social values, especially when there are high expectations concerning society, institutions and authorities which are unfulfilled. Cynicism can manifest itself as a result of frustration, disillusionment, and distrust perceived as due to organizations, authorities and other aspects of society, and thus is roughly equivalent to a substantive form of the English word "jaded"."

i wikipedia'd it shame on me...

Then Hitler was right? There is a Jewish gene?

Let me put it this way: you can convert to or from Judaism, but that is a very difficult task indeed if you're black or Asian or even white.
