Is square enix going to use an own engine or did they learn how to handle the unreal engine 3?from what i remember, work on ff13 started before the work on the last remnant

(the last remnant, another square enix game, used the unreal engine 3 and had lots of technical problems)

Taken from Wiki.

"The game runs on the Crystal Tools engine, a seventh generation multiplatform game engine built by Square Enix for its future games. The engine and the game were originally slated to be used with the PlayStation 2 but were later moved to the PlayStation 3."

Hope this answers it.

Seems to me like a strange question, Final Fantasy games aren't usually known for what engine they are on are they? I don't play many jRPGs so wouldn't know if they share the engine with any other big titles but I didn't think they did.

Also they aren't the most moddable games ever...

I was just curious since the game seems to run fine, but they had problems with a powerful engine they licensed for a ton of money, so i was just interessted if they're still using the same engine for that or simply don't care about the wasted money

The reasons why some companies have trouble with licensed engines over in house ones are because they have to take time to learn it and know how to properly use it. While the same goes for in house engines, it's a lot easier to use an engine you built yourself and are more familiar with than one that you simply borrowed. There is a reason why when companies make their own engine they stick with it, because they know it's strengths, weaknesses, limitations, and every little thing about it which proves more useful in the long run.

Well, that was a bit offtopic, since i was just wandering about square enix paying for something they don't use anymore, and from what i've heard epic games gives good support to other developers who buy their engines

Umm if I remember it was a specifically designed engine purely for squareenix and it's own titles. I believe they called it the "white engine" So they can do exactly what they want it to, and something about rendering in realtime for seamless transitions from traveling to combat. I remeber reading about it well over a year or so ago, though they may have changed it's name by now. ::shrug::
