The title says it all. What do you think video games are made for and why.

Me, I beleive that video games are made to retreat someone from the real world into a world of something that will never happen. (most of the time) In other words i beleive that video games exist to let someone escape from the real world.

Entertainment.

I wanted to say more than one word but that sort of sums it up.

They're made for entertainment. If the player makes more of them, then that's their thing. If the developer just feels like making them for something more, then fine. But at base value, it's only for entertainment. The same can be said of movies, TV shows, or books.

Ingredients:

Ten cups of effort and ward work
One Cup of hopes and dreams
one teaspoon of money

Method:

Place ingredients into studio. Mix well.

Place under publisher presser cooker for six months. Cook until tears of frustration appear in the once happy faces of studio employees. Increase heat, Cook for another six months.

Keep this up for three years.

Once game is finished, pass onto fan boys to review.

Decorate Game with large out of context quote from said fan boy, add large shiny picture that will please the target audience on cover.

Serve with novelty item.

Edit: Oh WHO they are for... Eh... everyone? I say just for escapism.

Shits and Giggles.

Do you want a philosophical answer? You thinking of this question on the same level of: Why do we exist? If so I think a better phrasing would be: Why do we play games? Or: Why do games exist?

Anyway, here's my answer: To keep us sane. Like any hobby, it gives us something to think about that we enjoy, outside of work or school.
