9 is mine. Good characters and one of the better intros to a ff game

But 10 did have the best combat of the series. And if you had the international edition the levelling progression was also the best in the series

I've only played three FF games and beat 1. I plan on buying a PSP and DS Lite so I can buy 1,2,4, and 7-8 on the PSN store.

1. Final Fantasy 9
2. Final Fantasy 3 (playing on Wii)
3. Final Fantasy 13, Pt.1

Heh...it's funny how everybody has by now accepted the fact that this is an eternally recurring thread against which no amount of "searchbar nazism" will suffice.

But seriously people, just ask yourself...how many times have you answered the question by now?

Oh......oh.....raking up post counts aren't we? Move along, citizen ;).

Final Fantasy IX at the top, quite above Final Fantasy Tactics, itself significantly above the next step down.

Crystal Chronicles, 7, 10 and 12.
Though not to far ahead of 6, and 8.

FF9 so much for it's charming characters, existentialist themes, and to be fair being my first true FF played probably contributes.

FFT for it's roller-coaster intrigue and wonderful battle system.

My personal favs have got to be X,XIII, X-2 in that order mostly because I found their stories to be the most enjoyable and found I didn't grow to hate any character in my party.

Final Fantasy IX hands down.

No other FF installment comes close in my opinion.

Honorable mention to FF XII and FF VIII.
Never played FF VII but I've heard nice things.

VII, inevitably VII. Pretty much the first game I played as a child (roughly 6-8 years old) after Crash Bandicoot and Spyro so it's got a special place in my heart for damn fine timing.
VIII was a really good game, but my version was damaged so I was never able to connect with it as a child like the others.
IX I never played through, just never got it.. Wanted it though.
X I remember having great memories of, a really great game.

After that I think the series has gone progressively further downhill as they began taking choice and flexibility away from your characters until (admittedly like in X) they all turn into carbon copies.

XIII's solution to that was to rail-road absolutely everything and from the start have characters who were just superior to others, which made little to no sense. The story was (even more) cringe-worthy than even X, not helped by the most pretentious of character naming. (Hope, really!?)

XII was okay, I guess. But that was it for me really. And Vaan really pissed me off, moreso than Tidus, who I actually liked as a character.

For me it is a tie between crystal chronicles and ffIV. Both are really good games
Quite surprised by Crystal Chronicles! This was my introduction to the series and I found it extremely average (though I do not criticise you for liking it! It's a different style of game, which perhaps doesn't suit me as well as it suits you.)

As for me...

My favourite is X because of its story, characters and gameplay. I hated the Sphere Grid and turn-based system at first, but I have picked the game up again recently and now have an extremely positive view of its mechanics. It allows you to plan carefully. :)

Next in line would be VIII, again because of its story and gameplay. I appreciate the way enemies level up with you.

After that, I'm not entirely sure. VI, VII, and IX are contenders, but I haven't played enough of the former two to rank them fairly! I enjoyed playing XII and XIII, but felt only satisfied by their plots and characters.

Nicely ironic.

(Currently secretly celebrating a huge +1 post count with drool raining down my chin and an uncontrollable erection) <----- Sarcasm

No, but really, thanks for your input. Anything to say on topic?

I'll give you your point about this being a recurring thread but does it really bother you that much?

I see you posted in a zombie related thread today, I believe it was a thread about how oversaturated the whole concept of zombies is.
Those things are pretty original huh? In my opinion; this is irony on an 'inception'-like level.

Problem with 7: Cloud weilds a sword bigger than him and PHEONIX DOWN THE FUCKING ***** WHO DIED
snip
I have lost count of how many times I've said this but PHEONIX DOWN DOES NOT BRING PEOPLE BACK FROM THE DEAD, IT BRINGS THEM BACK FROM THE BRINK OF DEATH. If all three characters are incapacitated in combat then it's game over because there's no one there to use pheonix down and you all bleed to death or whatever. When Aeris died she was ACTUALLY dead. And as for Cloud's sword, it's a Final Fantasy game, outrageously huge weapons and hair are what it's all about!

Anyway, VII is far and away the best as far as I'm concerned. I don't blame anyone who plays it now and doesn't like it, I imagine it's very dated in many ways. But it's one of my favourite stories in ANY medium, not just games, and it helped me through the shitstorm of early adolescence. I feel like all the characters are old friends, corny as that sounds.

X is my second favourite, followed probably by VI, then VIII then IX. All the ones before VI are good but I feel the series didn't really "come of age" until VI. All of them after X are just unadulterated shit. Well, XII had a few good points I guess, but it was missing the spirit of FF in my opinion.

I love talking about FF, can you tell?
lol I'm sorry, but I see so many times where characters get a sword go through their body in battle and they're not sliced in two, they just flail around for half a second before going back into battle stance. It's just an example of cut scenes doing what they want for the sake of story and despite gameplay.

Lighten up dude :)...why so serious? Did I hurt your feelings with my post or something? The posts thing was just a joke.

What bothers me about threads like these is that they have little capacity for starting any meaningful discussion. Very often it is just number spamming (VI, VII, IX, X etc) with a short explanation (a couple of sentences/ a paragraph): nothing interesting/ inspiring.

On topic: for nostalgia reasons I like IX best, but to be honest the older I get and the more entertainment (in various media) I consume, the more I understand just how bad ALL FFs are (story/ narrative/ plot/ characterization wise), even the ones I consider good in comparison. As a teenager immersion/ acceptance comes easier. Play the game again 5-10 years later and you are likely to notice more (and accept less).

I can tell you at age 13-14 FF VIII seemed a big deal. I played it with zeal and thought it was a serious game. At age 21 I laughed my ass off at just how ridiculous a large portion of the game was. Same game, I just got older and had more experiencs under my belt to compare it with.

The more FFs I have played, the less of an impact they had. "Surprise" reveals of a different antagonist who was actually controlling the initial antagonist. I've seen it before and have come to expect it.

A ragtag bunch of misfits who in the end, through the power of love and friendship, overcome their differences, endure hardships and obtain an unambiguous victory over the powers of evil (often evil for evil's sake) and thus save the day, the world and maybe even the universe. An epic quest in which you run around the world and at the end of which you always win. It features The Hero, The Love Interest, The Best Friend, The Cooky One, The Comic Relief, The Veteran, The Eccentric...you get the picture. In the end, FF games have come to slavishly follow their own recipe.

What about loss of friendship (through other means than death)? Pyrrhic victories? Ambiguous evil? Characters that transcend their roles? What about guilt, shame, remorse, doubt, jealousy, contempt? In other words, mature themes....with all the accompanying depth.

In my view, FF is a predominantly teenage product, created with teenagers in mind and mostly enjoyed by teenagers. Do not read any negative judgment into this statement, it would be your own projection.

Now, wouldn't you call this a real discussion as opposed to "I like FF X best because Yuna is cute and Sin is scary and oh my gosh the story is so kewl..".

Definitely X, bar none. But it should be noted that I have only played X, X-2 and XIII. It shouldn't be seen as a sign that I only pick that one because the others are basically crap (which they are). I genuinely love the game - as much as I love seeing Spoony pick on it.
Implying ff6 and 7 are crap, lulz

No no, just that X-2 and XIII are - at least in comparison. Still had some fun playing them though... and I'm pretty sure I would have loved some of the other games in the series if I'd jumped on the bandwagon a bit sooner.

I'm afraid its a 3 way tie for me between 8, 10, and 11. 8 was my first and i still find myself replaying it (probably the one i replay most), but then theres 10 which i also loved, but i guess if i really had to choose i suppose it would be 11 since i do have 150 days and some amount of hours of playing that mmo.
